Jan - Thanks for taking the time to find out about the MGs I have growing currently. I really appreciate it. I wouldn't even know where to begin to find that information or what exactly I was looking for. :-) And YES! I would love a few seeds of your yellow ochracea. I don't know if I have any seeds that you would be interested in. Take a look. I have a small list currently as I have just gotten into gardening after the hurricane season of Fall 2004. (But I would be very glad to share any of them with you! As well as any seeds that I might be able to harvest from these MG vines that I am growing.)
Gourd - Thanks for your insight and concurring what Jan is saying. I really appreciate the help!!!
So ............ this means ............. that now I need to harvest seeds from the vines I have started if I want to continue to have those cultivars in my yard? (I know that some MGs may not grow true to the parent plant.)

Yes you will need to reseed each year on them. If you are growing ones that can cross pollinate then yes, you could end up with new varietes.
beckygardener - The MG's that you mentioned are all Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea nil which are annuals and it would probably be helpful to familiarize yourself with how to search the PlantFiles...as I mentioned in the post here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3216670
When you view the main entry page of a species or cultivar >the listing of characteristics on the left will let you know if it is an annual or a perennial...
If your not sure about the exact species just put Ipomoea in the entry for genus and one of the main words for the cultivar in the cultivar bar...e.g., Ipomoea and Ott >will bring up Ipomoea purpurea GrandPa Ott's...it's actually quite user friendly...
The listing for Granpa Ott's here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/51597/index.html
mentions under category that the plant is an annual...
There may be some entries that are not precisely accurate and there are some species that can act as annuals or perennials depending on the exact strain involved and the climate, but these would be the unusual exceptions rather than the general rule of thumb...
Everyone has questions about something or some aspect and most of us are up to date on our rabies shots...'cept maybe one(or two)...but it's basically >casual...(!)
So,If you have more specific questions...perhaps just starting a new thread with your main question as the new thread heading might be the best way to address any particular subject in more detail...
Enjoy your MG's...
TTY,...
Ron
Jan a little OT but what is reclaimed water? Sounds like something good!!
Reclaimed water is waste/runoff water that is collected and treatment to remove all waste/contaminates, etc and is then piped out to various areas to use for agricultural purposes only. In my area, the pipes are run along the street and each house gets a hookup with a meter. We set 25000 gal/month for a flat fee of $8.00 that is put on the regular water bill. If for some reason you go over the allowed amount you per on a per gal basis for the excess.
I have occasionally forgotten to turn it off for like 8-10 hours and never gone over my limit.
What a great idea!!
Thanks Ron for better explaining how to use plantfiles for information. I think what I was really unclear about was whether or not some of the MGs could be perennials here instead of annuals. I know that there are many different plants that are annuals in the colder northern states, but they are perennials here in warmer Florida. When I saw Jan's root tubers, I thought maybe that was the case with many MGs because hers are 9 months old. But I now understand that MGs are basically annuals no matter where they are grown unless it is a specific perennial variety. That's where my confusion was. Thanks for clarifying that for me everyone! I will definitely be harvesting some seeds, but they will most likely be naturally pollinated, so I understand I might not get the exact cultivar from the next generation of seeds I've collected.
Jan - The reclaimed water system in your area sounds awesome! I wish they would do something like that here as we've been seeing more drought-like weather over the past 10 years..
