April's Frenzy of Flowers

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

This month EVERYONE should be posting their blooms...thank goodness it is Spring.

This H. patella bloom knocked my socks off...it is 1 1/2 " across...twice as big as a normal bloom. I know that many are swearing by their 'beer fertilizer', and I have to say that the MSU Fertilizer I have been using is fabulous!!! Never have had so may bloomers...

And here is one that blooms and blooms and blooms...the umbels are small, but all over the place. This was sent to me by Chris Burton herself labeled H. sp. Salweenica many many years ago....

Well, my Hoya Publicalyx cv Silver Pink decided to kindly wait for me over the weekend, and I'm still looking at buds. Can't wait to see this one open for me!

I have the following that are either currently in bud or bloom. The only one with open flowers right now is H. javanica. Others had flowers open within the past week but I didnt get any pics of them.
My mom was diagnosed with cancer the later part of last week I only found out a week ago yesterday and taking flower pics just wasnt a priortiy at the time.

Anyway these are the hoyas that I currently have about to bloom and some of them will be within the next day or so.

Carol,
Right now we dont know what the future holds for my family in regards to her diagnosis.

She and my dad are on their way as i'm typing this to Charleston,S.C. to the doctors. She has an appoointment today at 3pm to find out what stage the cancer is in and what treatment if any will be used to fight/remove it.

I'm not going to take up this thread talking about this but have my fingers crossed that everything will be okay.

this is a plant that I won on ebay early last spring. It grows like a weed and makes peduncles like you wouldnt beleive. Currently it has around 25-30 peduncles with some as you might be able to see in the pic will be open very soon!

this is cv. Mathilde

this is another plant that grows like a weed. I got it for antoher dg'er in a trade about 2 years ago. It's H. pubicalyx pink-silver

It blooms for me from early srpring right up to frost . It's also one of several that I have where the new buds are almost ready to open before the old set has fallen from the peduncle completely

Sorry for the nice shot of my hand but that was the only way I could get a decent pic of this one!!

this one hasnt flowered for me yet. I got it as a cutting on my very first order to David Liddle in 95". It rooted fast, began to grow well and then began to turn yellow. It had started to rot from the bottom up. I managed to save 2 very small pieces of it and somewhere along the way lost the ID tag and didnt know what it was.

Those 2 pieces that I saved have made a nice full basket now and I found the original DL tag stashed away in a catch all box that I keep in the gh.

It is IML 0358 vitellinoides(meredithii) this is how David lists it in his catalog. It is one of my favorite hoyas simply because of the leaves.I'd love to someday see it bloom but if it doesnt,i'll continue to grow it for the foliage. I currently have it in a high light area and i've noticed that the leaves are getting some pink in them

Very impressive dmichael and Carol & hills!!
You wouldn't very often see any hoyas blooming (or growing for that matter) around here like that
I have only a few hoyas with buds at the moments, & none are yet blooming but I am hoping to make it this time (to full bloom that is..). I think I have been shorting them on their food for a bit too long now - though apparently this cannot be with Epis cause even with no fert all year I have at least 60 or so going into bud - my hoyas should take lessons!

dmichael, best wishes to you and your mother and the rest of your family:)

by the way carol VERY NICE H. patella pic!!! That one is a beauty!

Abbie,

Don't feel bad because yo havent seen any flowers yet. I've got a few hoyas that will go as far as to develop buds to the point of almost opening and then blast them.

I got a nice H. pimenteliana plant from Carol. It came with a peduncle already forming little buds.Since it's arrival sevral months ago it has blasted buds at least a half dozen times. It currently has buds that look as if they could open within a few days but i'm not holding my breath on it!! It is growing well and putitng on new growth I just cant seem to get it to hold the buds though!!

My H. fungii does the same thing. I have been growing it for almost 2 years now with no luck getting the buds to open. The plant has a lot of new peduncles on it right now and I am watching one of them which has managed to develop some buds that look like they might make it. I dont know if its because of the homebrew stuff that I used all winter or what but I may finally get to see this one bloom.Funny thing about it is the buds are only forming on one side. Half are about ready to open while the other half are still in the infant stage!!

Carol your H. patella is wonderful, what a beauty. I wish I could hold that one in my hands.. How does this one smell? The padangensis is wonderful too, I had this one on my last David Liddle order and it is just now taking off, so maybe next year.

David my H. mathilde dropped all of it's buds it came with, but it is budding up again and developing a nice root system :)

Christina H. picta is such a nice creamy yellow, I likey !!

Forgot to say, great flowers and photos Carol! Especially that cominsii. Sort of looks a lot like pottsii doesn't it??

Yes...H. cominsii does sort of look like pottsii! I have two clones and one has normal type leaves and the other has very wavey undulating leaves...and they get bronzy in the bright light!!!

Gorgeous photos EVERYone!!!

Carol,

I have the IML0238 clone of H. cominsii from David. Is this the same one that you have pictured above or a different one?

Maria,

Congratulatons on the H. buotii flower. I have tried this one at least twice. I bought both cuttings from Ted Green at 2 differnt times of the year. The first one died promptly!!! The second one rooted and grew well for almost a year and a half and then it just suddenly began to slowly die and I lost the entire plant.

Nothing to do with the cuttings that Mr. Green sent as they were both nice and healthy,I think it was the time of the year that I tried to root the first one. I find it hard to root and grow things at a certain time of the year and as for the second one i'm not sure what happened to it. It had grown to be almost 3ft or more long and then started to die and as many cuttings as I tried to root from that dying plant, not one made it.

I will try and grow this one again but the last time I made an attempt to order it from Ted he told me that it was currently out of stock. So hopefully he'll have some of it available for sale this year.

Sorry, but I can't take the credit for the boutii flowers. It was Maria who posted that lovely photo! My little boutii is still just small so I'm happy to see Marias flowers for now.

Beautiful pictures everyone! I fully agree with Carol: thank goodness it is Spring!

I don't have much blooming right now, but lots of buds so I hope to get lofs of flowers soon =)

But a couple of Hoyas bloom anyway... My H. buotii flowers for the first time. Like you dmichael, I had to try a couple of times to get buotii to survive. But finally I got it to grow and bloom. It has wonderful, rather big flowers.
