Asterisk in New column

I've never been able to figure out what this is trying to tell me. It's in threads that I have read and not read. It's in threads that I've posted and not posted in.

So what is this typographical element in the first column trying to communicate? Thanks!

Which forums are you speaking of? I think it denotes that there is a picture in the first post of that thread.

In this 'Dave's Garden' forum there are no pictures on the forum page. But if you look at this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/706101/ from the forum page, you will notice an asterick. And yes, there is a pic in the first post on this thread.

If that's what you mean, here's a quick trip down DG's memory lane to explain it ;o)

Back when DG started, I'm not sure any forums allowed pictures. (I think there was only one forum for a while, but I joined DG about six months after it was launched, so I can't speak unequivocally about how things were before then.)

Then came the request for a photos forum (note the use of the word "a" as in singular - only one forum) - here's Dave's welcome message: http://davesgarden.com/place/t/4094/

Eventually, the demand for photos in other forums necessitated expanding this function, but there were no thumbnail views at the outset: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/117367/ and http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/201469/ and http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/289356/

Someone suggested it would be nice to know if the thread had a photo in it - if memory serves, the reqeust was from people on dialup who didn't want to wait for threads with pictures to load, so if they could know ahead of time they could skip any threads with a photo.

Then, it was decided to put thumbnails in the Photos forum: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/286938/

Eventually, there was a request to put thumbnail views in the summary pages of other forums: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/430514/

For most forums, that's now the norm but there are still a few that don't have thumbnails.

So, the short answer to your question is the asterisk appears in that column for forums that don't have thumbnail views of pictures and it indicates there is a photo in the first post of that thread.

I remember when we only had pictures in the Photo Forum......does that make me OLD? LOL I was old when I got on here. Jo
