Early Bloomers

On the Pieris japonica issue...My general understanding is that the "Lace Bug" (that causes damage) and the "Lacewing" (which is generally listed as a beneficial) are two separate insects.

kt: your pictures do have me a little worried. I planted some Pieris japonica two years ago. I have not had any issues but I have been hesitant to plant more.

Brent on or around June 1st I spray with 4 seasons oil and make sure that I cover the undersides of the leaves well. The damage in the posted photos happened during the summer of 2005 which was exceptionally hot and dry. I grew Pieris for many years before the lacebug showed up. I would think if you are concerned you should be keeping an eye on your Pieris 3 weeks earlier than the North East? Or better yet check the back issues of your Extention Landscape Messages. I really do think they are a wonderful shrub and worth the extra care. kt

Andromeda lacebug will be active soon. The eggs of this pest have over-wintered embedded in the host plant tissue. Inspect leaf undersides of Japanese andromeda for the activity of this pest. Treat the plant with a soil applied systemic treatment of imidacloprid or spray the leaf undersides with an insecticidal soap. Pyrethroid insecticides are also labeled for this pest….*Note posted as active June 16th, 2006.

Wow Donna you are so way ahead of us. Nothing but emerging stuff here. That looks wonderful. I shall have to get some.

Donna,

I love that! Looks like a clumper too, or do you think it will spread? Corydalis is a genus they've just begun to scratch, I think.

It is a clumper, but i don't think it will spread very fast. I tried to order a new Corydalis from FF Berry Exciting, but they called me to tell me they had lost all of their stock. Too bad.
