I would say you are much better off planting right now a couple of winter sowing pots of Summer Carnival (which is supposed to bloom the first year) and Chartres Doubles which will bloom next year. Then you can have all you want! The seeds are in the box stores and in Walmart; you might want to get a packet of old fashioned hollyhocks too. Some are fringed, others are not.

Hollyhocks are very easy to start from seed. I would do that rather than trying to get some roots from Walmart to grow. I'm starting lots of hollyhocks from seed this year by just planting them directly into the garden. Some may bloom this year and some may not bloom until next year. If you get an established bed of hollyhocks going, they will reseed themselves and in a few years you will have blooms every year, even if they are biennial type, because you will always have some in various stages of maturity.

Thanks everyone for all of the information on the Holly Hock. It got up 82 today but the low is going to get down to 35 by this weekend. My holly Hock are starting to come up, My rose bushes are starting to get green ( I
have 150 of them).

It will be a while for my hardy hibiscus to come up, I have several colors of them. I just got my first Ditigal camara so I will be able to post pictures as soon as everything starts blooming.

If you are going to buy from Wal-mart or other big box stores, shop early. I bought a pouch with 2 bleeding heart roots. I noticed that some of the pouches were quite light but a few were heavy. I picked the heaviest one and the roots were large and healthy. I had to use this method because I couldn't see the roots for all the peat in the bag.
I also noticed there were roses with many large branches but that will not be the case for long. since they are only $5.57, they could be a deal.

Woodspirit1. If you have a aldi store near you they are selling #1 rose bushes for $3.99 each & a lot of good colors, plus they have some other plants for $2.99.

i purchased double purple ones last year and was doubtful id get anything and they were incredible! they were so purple they almost looked black. i have several seeds from them and will sow them directly as soon as the soil warms up. i had great luck with them, i was dubious, when i planted them but i gave it a shot and they came up again this year and are looking good so far. give it a try! mine were certainly worth the $5.!! good luck
