Thanks Andy. Doesn't look / feel like Spring here yet. Had to cancel my first group hike set for tomorrow - I hate snow!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yup. Spring's here... somewhere under a foot of snow. I have plants that already arrived in the mail. Gotta wait for the thaw. Soon I'll be putting up my hammock and then I'll never see the indoors 'till fall.

I am going to teach nursing in 5 years.... in september I go back to school for a master program... yes I will teach in my college - the program is great but they need good instructors for some subjects...

oh today was such a beautiful day... a lot of ice/dirty snow ... but the noise of melting snow is so sweet!@!!!!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I have only a few more weeks of radiation to go and I can't wait. I want to feel not tired again. I want to work in my garden. I am passing the time this week with the New England flower show in Boston and our small flower show with my garden club here in Saugus. Spring better hustle on up here. I am ready.
Martha

(Zone 4a)

I too think spring has arrived. We have a day of rain today and mild weather which should get rid of the rest of the snow (I hope).

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

KAssia - The Earth Knows My Name is much better. It is about "ethnic" gardens and the people who keep them. Dmail me your address and I will send it off.

The crocus have started to bloom in my yard. Woohoo! One more snow storm and winter is over (according to my friend who has lived in this area all her life - anyway.)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Kassia -teaching a subject that you love is the BEST job in the world! You go, girl!

P. S. What does a person have to do to get an invite to see your gardens and turtles this summer?

Seandor

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good luck, Martha! Spring is great for all kinds of new beginnings.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi Martha - I was wondering about you the other day since it had been a while since you posted. Good luck - I'm glad your treatments are almost done.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi, Martha. good to hear you're almost done. so you'll have the energy to get on with the good things :0)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Hi Martha!
Good to hear from you and I'm glad you're reacing the end of a tough phase. My thoughts are with you.

Kassia, You are returning to school again? You really are a professional student! Very interesting life you've been leading. For me, 6 years was more than enough. (Al and/or Victor: yes, that was just to get through first grade)

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks to all for your kind thoughts. I have been running on restricted hours as getting enough sleep has been my main priority. No staying up late to type and chat on DG. or anywhere else.
Kassia, when you get to the flower show please check out Junior Horticulture over in the Amateur section by the north entrance. Also, my kids and I {Kids=21 and 18} have jade plants in the Amateur Horticulture section. Mine is a Crassula 'Hobbit' which they seemed to think is 'Gollum' and my daughter has a regular jade plant. My son has a good sized Opuntia. These are all with the cacti and succulents. We will find out tomorrow night how we did.

We will be there tomorrow evening as Junior Horticulture {yours truly, chairperson} does an activity for kids for the Children's Festival. I will be on duty with my intrepid squad of Juniors committee members from 3:30 to 8. Junior Hort has won its eighth gold medal in a row. You can see it on our sign when you get there. I am very proud that it is my fourth one as chairperson. You never know who will be hobnobbing with prize winning Junior Horticulture chairpersons so I enclose this picture taken Tuesday night when we were entering cacti. Roger is a really nice guy!
I have to close up shop here for now since there is a lot to do before the show tomorrow. Enjoy your day on Saturday.

Have fun Martha. Great that your kids are involved too.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good luck Martha and have fun, but don't forget to rest when you need to!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Great.... I will check it out... I am going tomorrow (saturday) ... so far I am going alone... but maybe is better this way since I can take my time!!!! and stay as long as I want!!!!!

Dave, I am going to Regis College for a Master's in Nursing... I love school... I love to learn... and the one good thing about nursing is that you can really use in your practice what you learn in school... well, so far that was my experience.

I am really impressed with the book "Beautiful Madness" I am learning a lot about gardening history... really cool things... for sure now I want to visit the Philadelphia Flower Show, and Monticello - to see Thomas Jefferson's gardens.... goodness gracious...
for my family in Brazil gardening is part of the culture... it's on both sides of my family... primarily the women on my dad's family... now that I think back it's really amazing how they did it... fruit trees, ferns, roses, gorgeous veggie gardens, etc... on my mom's family it's everyone... I think only one uncle doesn't garden... some own orchards, and 4 work for the goverment agency that takes care of research... they all see plants... from the field to the microscope...
but gardening is basically part of every house, every family...

The first time my mom came here after I had gotten the condo was the beggining of this "gardening madness" for me... she looked around and told me: you have no plants! how come? You don't like violets anymore? you had a collection when you left to come here???
So we went to Home Depot and I got 4 violets.... and they all died ... so I got some more... and they all died again... so I got more and finally I saw how one of my co-workers took care of hers and they didn't die anymore... I still have some that are 10 years old... and they still bloom.... 3 of them are right here at my office....
so after violets, ferns, spider plant, and some others... the wax plant I have ( I almost killed the poor thing this year!!!!! it's in ICU right now!!!!!!) cost only 1.69 at Home Depot....

now I am in serous situation... I think it is the onset of another passion... the one that laid dormant for a long time... so I guess I belong to the group...

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Welcome back, Martha! I noticed your absence, but as Dorothy said, "People come and go so quickly around here."

Where do you folks put your Amaryllis foliage to ripen once the blooming's over?

xxx, Carrie

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Carrie, keep the Amaryllis on a very sunny window sill until it's warn enough to go outside.
Go easy with the sun for the first week or two outside, it can get sun burn just like you.
Keep it in the pot in a fairly sunny spot, water and a little food until just before frost, in October.
Bring it into the basement or cool room (NO FROST) and forget it for 6 to 8 weeks.
Re-pot it in fresh, quality potting soil to start the process all over again.
Good luck

I don't have enough sunny windows!

Martha, your pictures are always interesting. This time you're hobnobbing with celebrities. Good luck with your entries!

I went out to pull up the hay that covers my main perennial garden and much to my delight, the first iris is in bloom and dozens of crocuses are budding. Spring's here!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Andy, I like the ''small thoughts'' defination.

Martha, I too hope you reach the end of the tunnel soon.

Kassia, when do you find the time? Smiling over the dead plant story.

It's spring here! Unfortunately we still have to get thru April, which turns chilly again. We've had about 2'' of rain and I got to hear lots of thunder and see lots of lightning! Thursday, I MOWED!!!

Tomorrow, I sow cabbage and brussel sprouts.

Thumbnail by billyporter
Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

jjpm - you mean I really was supposed to put hay out there? I joked with the guy who provided the hay for the Christmas tableau that I wanted it, but he said he needed it back!

billy - see, nobody but me would eat cabbage or brussel sprouts!!!

From the snowblower to the lawnmower in a week...

Kassia, Is that Regis Philbin College?:)

We may get a touch of snow tonight. All the old stuf is gone.
It was really nice yesterday. The earliest Crocus are up.

My Hobbit/gollum jade plant got a second place. It was beat out by a regular but very beautifully variegated jade. My daughter got an Honorable mention for her jade plant and my son an Honorable for his opuntia. I have to download the pictures we took yesterday. I was delayed because today was my Garden Club's flower show where the Hobbit/Gollum that broke off the one down in Boston a few years ago got a Blue ribbon. Not a bad day. I got a blue ribbon for my terrarium, also. and various others for my designs which are not my strong point. But this show is one day and is a big social thing so, I had a great time. I am heading off to bed now because I am flower showed out at the moment. Catch you all tomorrow.

Congratulations and enjoy the rest of it!

Good job Martha and Family!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

What sort of history are learning Kassia? Has anything stood out for you? Here's a bit of history that I found interesting as it's origin is from my family's town in Germany. http://www.georgeglazer.com/prints/nathist/botanical/besler/besler.html

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Martha, sounds like a good day! love to see pics, have any of your terrarium?

I'm enjoying the crocus pics. I planted some when I moved in, but they didn't do very well. they still come up, but they are the tiniest I've ever seen. of course, I didn't amend the clay and I've never fed them. might have something to do with their failure to thrive? I think I should start over.

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

Hi Everyone,

Andy, I have been enjoying these threads for a few weeks and I love your pictures. My DBF's mom lives in Brockton so we get up there once in a while. Last time I got him to take me to Bugaboo Creek because I was curious, we don't have one down here. But next time it's going to be IKEA!

Martha, I enjoyed your picture of you and Roger Swain. I got to see him last year at the Providence Flower Show- he is such a great speaker- very funny!
I'd love to see your terrarium too. I wish you good health and lots of energy for Spring.

Victor, I checked out the forum, it looks very interesting. Hmm...must investigate further.

Kassia- I will have to check out that book- I love good books on gardening. The name alone catches my interest!
I had to go up to Natick with my mom for a funeral Friday. Afterward we stopped to see my sister, and she wasn't home. We were talking with her husband when she came in with a big Brug in her arms- from you!!! So I thought I'd say hi! :)

Be sure to check out the Photos forum if you're into pics. Especially, Daily Pics, started by our own Andy! Some great photos and photographers on there.

carrielamont--My wife enters a pumpkin carving competition each year and whether she wins or loses, we get to keep the pumpkin as well as the bale of hay it was carved on. Hay makes for a great groundcover because it keeps in the heat but allows for ventilation. It's also a fun autumn decoration on the porch in the fall. I used to use oak leaves, but my neighbor chopped down the oak tree that supplied my yard with a steady flow of leaves in the fall (which is a good thing since I used to get screened light in 2/3s of my yard).

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Cool, jjpm! Aren't oak leaves toxic? And who could cut down an oak tree? I mean mighty oaks DO from little acorns grow, but it is by no means instantaneous!

xxxx, Carrie

Stratford, CT(Zone 6b)

This oak tree was infested with termites and half dead already. Its time had come.
