Something I inherited...

Dallas, TX

This plant was here when I moved here. There are bunches of it on the side of the house. What is it? Is it anything that someone would like a piece of? :)

they come in various shades of blue, also white. tall and dwarf. Vigorous growers but one most people don't mind.

Oh my! Thanks Vossner, I have always tried to grow this plant, but I was never sucessful with it. How often do you divde the clumps? I sure cant wait until they bloom. :)

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Those flowers are beautiful....any chance I could get a clump of that Sylvia?

I found this excellent site on agapanthus culture. scroll down and they will make mention of dividing. I just recently bought mine so I haven't had to divide. however, the pot was so crammed, that I divided in two before I planted in my garden.

Dallas, TX

umm ... uh ... Vossner did you forget something? the link? lol

OMG, scatterbrain!

Oh wow Sylvia! I just went to HD yesterday and bought bulbs and got those 3 of them were $7! I love the looks of them though. The ones they had were purple.

No telling what else you may have growing around there. Watch where you dig, LOL!!

Dallas, TX

Sheila Where have you been? ...been thinking about you. I dont know what color they are, I dont know if they bloom. Last week when I noticed them they were little clumps... just look at them today. I am going to get some of that bulb food for them.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, if you have someone who will dig for you, I'd love to have some agapanthus. I have some plants on my list so check on the RU trades thread and see if I can bring some for you. Some of my hostas are coming out, but I know some are gone after two horrible hot summers. The 'Striptease' you gave me last fall is in the greenhouse and just beginning to sprout. My big digging dog is no longer allowed in the garden area, so perhaps I can keep the ones I have left.
Thanks, Patricia

Dallas, TX

Nooo problem Pat! I got about six of those big clumps on the side of the house. I am excited too, I have been trying to grow Agapanthus for years.
Oh yeah i think you promised me some Liatris. :)

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks for that useful link, Vossner.

Congratulations on your find, CitySilvia.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been on DG, but just lurking on the RU threads for now. I go to the DR tomorrow and find out just what the future holds, then I see if I can make plans or not to go. Later

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Good luck Sheila with the dr. I'll send a prayer your way.

Sylvia, about the agapanthus, I haven't look at the link yet, but as I understand it agapanthus takes a long time to established itself before it blooms and it likes to be root bound. So if you are going to dig up and share, just pick one or two clumps and leave the rest undisturbed so you can hopefully have flowers.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Has anybody else heard that agapanthus like to be root bound? I just read the link and it sounds like they are saying it should be divided to keep it healthy. I am confused. I put mine in pots so they could be rootbound.

Nevada, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, I think the foliage you are seeing may belong to lycoris sqamigera, surprise lily. I have many of these in my yard. The foliage comes up beautiful and full in the spring and dies back like daffodils. Then, mid to late summer, a few days after a good rain, surprise! Up come the scapes with a beautiful pink flower.

Marylee i have been trying to grow Agapanthus for years ... only in pots and i never had any luck with them.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I have mine in pots too. They bloomed last year. Really surprised me. So we'll see this year if it's any better. They are very cold hardy by the way. I left mine out all winter up against the east side of the house uncovered most of the time. Some of the leaves are yellow now, but there's new ones coming out too.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Dawn, look at the pic of Sylvia's and notice the brick in relationship to the size of the plant. On the link you added, the plant foliage doesn't look as large to me. What do you think?
Frankly I would be thrilled to find either one as a surprise!! =0)

Dallas, TX

sheila wgar was that plant you gave me with a purple flower? I am trying to remember what pot it was in, so i can find it.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well it could be several plants by that description! LOL!
But let me see, I have taken three that it could be.
Larkspur, 'May Night' Salvia, or maybe 'Indigo Spires'. Any ring a bell?

Nevada, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila,
I don't grow agapanthus, so I can't really compare. (Although I did order two this year through a co-op, should be receiving soon.)
I do however have several of the lycoris and the foliage does get to be quite large. I know that lycoris will naturalize easily in this area, and that agapanthus can be more difficult. The size, shape, and timing make me think it could be the lycoris. I will try to get a picture from my yard to show.
But I agree with you, either would be a great find! ☺

Dallas, TX

Sheila ... it was the Maynight Salvia. I babied that plant and it was still in the pot. I sure hope its in my cart of unidentifiables. do you remember seeing it in the courtyard?
Dawn I discovered a bunch of those Hollyhock seeds someone gave me at a swap. Can I just put them in the ground?
I think i will go to HD tonight and get ssome Bulb food for the (whatever) is out there ... and get me some agapanthus bulbs. 3/7.00 ?

Nevada, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, the french hollyhock seed should be fine in the ground. Remember though, since they are a biannual, you will see foliage this year, flowers next year. But they self sow, so you should have plenty every year after that.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Dawn may be on to something. When I guessed agapanthus, it was because of the rounded tip on the strap leaves. But then I went to ck out my lycoris sq. and it has the same kinda leaves. I am looking forward to your pics this summer on this plant.

Dallas, TX

me too Vossner... :) I just hope they flower, who knows how long they have been there.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't remember seeing it for certain, but we had those shovels flying that day! LOL!
The May Night isn't up yet, so don't give up. I had cut mine back and it has the dead stem sticking out of the ground now. If you can't find it I will have a bunch more this year I am sure. It had reseeded itself last year, that is where your plant came from.
btw, I will send a Dmail about the dr appt tonight or in the morning.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm trying to find may night salvia and indigo spires on PF and getting nowhere.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I finally found the 'May Night' which is spelled 'Mainacht', LOL!! Guess someone had told me the name and it stuck but didn't realize the spelling. Here goes.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, thanks for those links. I have a place for the scarlet penstemen, but I'm not sure about the indigo spires, because it need so much water. I do have some cannas to plant though. Would it go well mixed in with those or planted at the back. One entry said they get to be 6 feet tall. My cannas are supposed to be 3 and 4 feet tall.

Dallas, TX

Sheila i would like some of that indigo Spires too ... pretty please. dont you think that would look wonderful in my front yard?

OK, OK, OK, LOL!!! You will need to wait, as it isn't up yet, but I will get you some as soon as it is.

Frisco, TX(Zone 7b)

You are in Dallas?

My Nile Lilly (agapanthus) here in Frisco has just started to show some growth. Those are lots of leaves for not having seen any of the incredible blue flowers in years past. Maybe something else?

W J

Dallas, TX

Yes i am in Dallas. How long ago did you plant yours? I bought a bag of Dutch bulb food for mine. If that dont make it bloom, nothing will. lol

Darn Sheila! How did I get three post just alike? ... no wonder you were screaming! LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL!!
WJ, Sylvia just moved to that house this last fall, so that is why she is asking, it is new to her. Like I said, I would love to have either one of the plants it turned out to be. =~)

Dallas, TX

Well Guess what? Dawn was right! Mitch was over today and as we toured the Gardens(yeah! right!) lol , guess what we found in bloom?
Its a Resurrection Lily! I had forgotten all about the plant. I thought the plant was dead ... so for everyone who got one at the RU, now you know what it is

Guess it you thought it was dead then it bloomed like that, the name really fits!!
