It is with great sadness I have to report that my Jalap root rotted upon planting it in soil...must have been too far gone or dehydrated or whatever they do to it to prepare it to ship. My quest for seeds seems to be characterized by misidentification and dashed hopes.
This entry from an old medical journal "Flore Medicale" of 1814, is interesting because it is describing Convolvulus jalap. It is assigning many of the purgative properties we associate with Ipomoea purga or what we call "Jalap" today. However, the drawing of this plant shows a cream colored or yellow bloom, rather than the purple on we now call Jalap.
Jalap angst
Here is the computer translation:
Several authors, according to Tournefort. had brought back the jalap in a kind of belle-de-nuit, ummée mirabilis jaJappa, L., with whom roots are gifted of a purgative ownership; but it was definitely acknowledged since the jalap true was a bindweed, the covvolvulus jalapa, 14. which the essential character of type consists in a chalice in five divisions; a corolla mouopétaLe. pleated, campaniforme or infondihuliforme; five stamens; a style overcome by two stigmata.
His stems are very - long, herbaceous and climbing, covered with a Light down, as well as all plant, trimmed with leaves alternate, pétiolées, in forms dihéren, légè — disavow ondul are on Their edges; lower triangular, almost in the form of a heart, the superiors the more alongées, the more aigues.
Flowers are solitary, alternate pédoncules tin, stalked, located in Paisselle by leaves rather more short that flowers; the corolla is rather big, of a daffodil.
This plant believes in Mexico, aix vicinity of VéraCruz. It draws its name of Xalappa, city of ospaguole America, where from she came to us for the premiere time.
Such as her comes in trade, the root of jalap is big, short, rounded up, or in thick, heavy, spherical, harsh edges, of a brownish yellow colour outside, and a veined grey intensively. His Wavy and smooth break is interspersed with brillans points; her smell is lightly queasy, and its acrid and prickly taste. They withdraw an extractive material from it, and a resin to which the jalap owes all its medical propriéts. Having carried on the nasal pits, the raciue of jalap pulverized irritates the pituitaire membrane, and causes sneeze. Having introduced clans the stomach, it produces not enough impairment in functions of this organ; but it agitavec forces on the channel int (stinal, and cause of abounding evacuations alvines. u jalap, says Scbwilgué, managed to small dose and very — spread, causes a purgation without colics. 11 acts in a more constant way than the root materials of which are not always in the same proportions. I often managed alcoholic extract of jalap in the dose half gramme, Either in form of pills, or in suspension in hundred and two hundred times penny weight of water, without causing colics or of notable general confusion. It is one of the purgatives which deserve most of etre used. They can, had efiet, manage it quickly of volume, and conceal its taste easily, her action is constant; he can suit, and when one wind to cause a purgation without general phenomena, and when they want to determine a general confusion. » Toutefiis the efpérience seem to have noted that the jalap, as well as the resin which they withdraw from it, is not much suitable in general for the nervous temp ramens, for constitutions very - bad-tempered, on dry subjects, in May ares and ardens; or must refrain from it, in inflammatory diseases, and in all affectations which are accompanied (the one lives vital reaction, or of a lot of annoyance). On the other hand, this - purga is very suitable - definitely for the lymphatic tempéranlens, for the strong individuals with not enough nervous touchiness, to the women and to infants, to whom white saps predominate, and with whom the intestinal channel is habitually overloaded of thick and abounding phlegm.
They especially use it in the rebel catarrhal afèctions and écoulemens in old date, on the ancient rheumatisms, the tonic drop, the scurvy, the mlanclj and other neuroses, against which the purgative treatment is useful. They use it especially successfully in the edema, scrofulas and vermineuses diseases. Various authors have recommended effectiveness (read jalap in the hydropisie ascite, but there can have been success only when this illness is essential and atonique; because, if it had inflammatory character, as well as it arrives what. quefois, Where if it was result of the inflammation of the peritoneum, what is the most ordinary case, they have a feeling that a similar purgative would be much more harmful to it than useful. The only disadvantage for which they can reproach the root of jalap, it is that, according to the more or less big quantity of resin which it contains, it produces, as well as points it out. Murray: “effects sometimes barely sensitive, sometimes so intense that he can result from it a calamitous inflammation, and death: circumstance which must urge to use preferably the resin which, always itself, acts containment in the same way in the small doses, and produces besides the same effects as the root itself.”
Much more active than this last, the resin of Jalap devotes itself hardly beyond a gramme (eighteen grains) to the adults. In infants of less than eight years old babies, they manage it to the dose of so many grains which they have of years, and from eight to ten grains to those who are from eight to fifteen years old. The root is managed, to the adults, of one to two grammes (sixteen-thirty-six grains), and in fans from twenty-five to fifty centigrams (five-ten grains).
It is necessary to be told that the root of jalap is often worm-eaten and spoilt by dilapidation in boutiques, that his resin is often sophisticated by its mixture with the rosin or other resins. This purgative root enters in the composition of a crowd of superannuated inédicamens, such as the électuaires hydragogue of Srlvius, and autihydropiqite of Charas, the Catholic extract of RoiJincius, the anti gout pills of Scheffer, syrups bydragogue and drink of stud farm, and dens pharmaceutical preparations condemned for an endless neglect. They still find the jalap in a big number of invigorating and purgative tinctures, in which are packed pharmacopeias and French and foreign forms.

Hi Beth,
I know the feeling when we lose one of our MGs.. I did not read the whole thread, but wanted to comment on how beautiful that print is.
A.
Beth - very interesting material...as is known the most common action of various Ipomoea seeds and roots is of a purgative nature and the yellow flowered plant represented in 'this olde texte' may be a yellow flowered form of an Ipomoea 'jalap' or most likely a relatively closely related plant to what is currently known as Ipomoea purga...
There are at least several olde drawings that depict Ipomoea purga with an orange-salmon colored flower like the drawing on the Mobot site...although in the current literature the plant Ipomoea purga is described as having fuchia or purple colored flowers such as is seen in the photos of Ipomoea purga that I added to the PlantFiles here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/139468/
I've noticed that in the drawing above the jalap presented is depicted as having protuberances along the stems such as is seen in Ipomoea turbinata, but not as often seen in the relatively closely related Ipomoea alba...
Thanks for presenting this interesting and valueable historical reference material...
TTY,...
Ron
Here is an Australian seller on eBay marketing Ipomoea jalapa.
Do you suppose it is the real deal?

Interesting indeed! I am curious to know why the blooms are now a different color. The yellow and salmon colors are very pretty and it would be nice to find seeds for those. Must've crossed over the years to come up with different colored blooms. I wonder if you kept growing out the fuchia or purple strain if you might get an older yellow or salmon gene (bloom)?
Joseph,
If the seller is selling the same seeds as last year, they are Ipomoea turbinata.
He did give me a refund when I received the seeds and saw what they really were.
Emma
I wouldn't be so suspicious of that. When you buy the seeds from a wholesaler, you normally don't have a picture of the flower to use.
When I saw this plate, I thought it might be a case of the ink fading, but the French does describe the flower color as a pale yellow. This makes me wonder if this is a species confusion or maybe conflation. I have seen this in other plants that were being used in botanical medicine. Sometimes you will even come across plants of completely different genuses being identified as the same plant for medicinal uses.
I sure would like to grow this plant too. I got seeds from a German shop identified as I. purga, but I heard that they were misidentified, and by the time I tried to germinate them, they were no longer viable anyway. Is there a pic of the seeds anywhere?
Thank you, I have bought 3 seeds from the australian Ebayer :o) now
~Sylvia
Hi I purchased the same seeds from the same seller and they turned out to be Ipomoea turbinata. The following link has information about the seeds me and others purchased and what they produced.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/720650/
good luck,
Dee
Thanks Dee, then I hope I get the right kind of seeds
Sylvia
This person knows they are not selling the right seeds because they refunded my money when I complained....but I guess not everyone complains so they continue to make money here and there.
I take a chance, they where fairly cheap. And I dont have I .turbinata neither
~Sylvia
MGJapan, thanks for the pic of the seeds. These look just like the seeds I got that I couldn't germinate, so I guess they were I. turbinata too.
Yeah, I've got that on my list to grow next year on a trellis next to the carport. I tried growing it two years ago but I had started so many seeds I got overwhelemed and many were neglected to death. I decided to severely limit myself and got that and an expensive and very beautiful Japanese MG from Onalees. Those together with the Black Knight I never got around to this year should keep me satisfied.:)
Dee about your picture, is it the I .turbinata-seeds you show?
I can´t see any different of these in the picture, they looks the same for me!!!!
~Sylvia
Also note from the botanical drawing that Jalap seeds have a fringe of hairs around the seed, while turbinata does not.
Wooaw how big they are turbinata, then I can not mix up with Jalap when they arrive.
I write to the seller, he was sad to hear about seedmixup, he say he buy from other sellers I thought it was the one´s he thought he buy, he offer me payback if I regret the purchase. But I go for it as I say I dont have any of them. But it is good to see your pictures. And thanks Beth for your spec. of hairy seeds of Jalap
I will let you know which one´s I´ve got then.
Sylvia
Hello my seeds have arrive, they are big and black and not any fringe of hairs around the seed, so I think it is turbinata then or what? :o(
Yes, they are just like the turbinata I got from the same seller "yadrisil" or something like that.
Yes Yggdrasil is the name. I shall tell her she sell wrong seeds
That seller got me too on the same seeds. Turbinata are much easier to come by and cheaper. But I was a VICTORIOUS SHOPPER.!
All the trouble, waiting, anxiety, work, growing, bugs, etc, and you get an offer of a refund. For me that just adds insult to the whole thing. This person has been told adequately and is still doing the same thing making the same offer of the wrong plant that is a high priced one. Obviously a VICTORIOUS SELLER ! Frank
You should report the seller to ebay. It's one thing to get a batch of seeds that are misidentified. That can happen to any seed seller. But to be told repeatedly that the seed is not as identified and yet to continue to sell it is just fraudulent marketing and motivated by greed.
Unfortunately, I have had horrible experiences with ebay! I've been duped more than happy with purchases. I can honestly say that the cheaper the item the more happy I am with what I get. Things that seem to be a good deal, but are amore expensive item is usually garbage that either doesn't work, isn't what I thought I was purchasing and doesn't even look like the picture, or was "used" in the worst way and certainly not worth what I paid for it. I could've done better at a garage sale. So I don't do ebay purchases anymore. :-(
I have only good experience of Ebay, except for some books I bought from United Kingdom which stink of tobacco smoke and seems to have lay in a dirty, mold greenhouse instead of bookshelf.
All seeds have been what I bought, except for jalap, and I have bougnt very much seeds from EBAY, but such happends, I´ve got my money refund in 5 days when I´m complain of the wrong jalapseed, but I think I will grow the seeds anyway to see how they look, I have only yours word on Davesgarden, that they are wrong.
~Sylvia
