Way to go Tamara! I most certainly do understand your excitement with the indoor seeds sprouting. That's about all that's been keeping me going lately :-)
--Ginny
Who else has NO germination yet?
I saw the top of my containers yesterday, we had a 60º day and the snow dropped fast. The temperatures are going back to normal today so I am even going to plant a few more containers. Aren't those of you with warm weather jealous I can still plant. (I know it is nothing to brag about.) We had been getting warm winds from the west, but now our weather is moving in from the north. Winter is back.
d-cat, I think you're on schedule. I just saw my first WS seedlings yesterday of some Iceland poppies. This is my first year too, but I have a good feeling about it! What did you sow?
gemini, mostly annual flowers.Petunias, calendula, sweet pea, begonia, nicotina, and some I can't think of right now. I had some petunias growing in planters on the deck, and I looked this morning, and have some coming up in them. So it shouldn't be much longer.
Hey! No fair! All you other zone 5 folks have sprouts. OK Tamara, you asked the question Who ELSE has no germination yet? The "else" doesn't apply anymore, but the answer is ME!
However the 6 flats of indoor seedlings (that I swore I wouldn't plant this year) are going gang busters so I'll be patient. Maybe. LOL!
dcat, I think it is too soon to worry; those are mostly warm season annuals on your list, so they probably need some more warm days. I found 2 more containers germinating yesterday, peony poppies and 1 hollyhock! These warm days have me running out once (or more) a day to check- a most exciting time! Good luck everybody!
We have snow on the way.
zen -- it seems like you guys just can't get a break from it. We're a lot colder, but no snow forecasted.
i did see on the news (weather channel) this morning about a tornado in OH -- where? I wasn't sure, and it did look like a dusting of snow.
granted -- technically,, it's still winter... though with the past few days, it certainly felt like Spring.

As much as I hate to say it we do need the moisture. I could take it in rain though. This time of the year the snow quickly turns to ice making it hard to keep from falling.
I was in shorts yesterday, and now we have snow. :-P It's supposed to be cold throughout the weekend.
tcs--That tornado was in Elyria. I think that's about 2 hours from where I am. I didn't really hear anything about it, because it was time for Disney channel. ;-) Tamara
Rain today... and NO germination for me either. I'm still doing annuals and perennials. Some of them say 'plant outside after danger of hard frost'. So is WSing at this point in my zone just so I know where I planted what? Maybe it will freeze again. I planted convolvulous and MGs and asters, most of which say "germinates in 7 - 14 days". Does that mean I'll have sprouts in 7 - 14 days? I guess I;m pretending it's winter and spring at the same time, or maybe it really is. I'm still planting perennials that I didn't get around to, but I'm also doing plenty of annuals.
xxxxx, Carrie
Same here Carrie . . . rain today and only the foxgloves have germinated. Sigh . . . .
No germination for me. Our weather is rainy and lots cooler, supposed to hit the high 20's tonight.
Count me in as another with no germination. I'm not really worried about it because I think microclimates have a lot to do with it. Even though it was warm here for several days, my containers are on the east side of my house and only get about 3 hours of morning sun, plus it is windy here most of the time. I think that makes a difference. Also, last year I had great success so I'm much calmer about the whole process now.
arachide, thanks that makes me feel better, but then I panic, and say, I was so counting on this for most of my annuals, now I will have to go out and spend the $$ on ones from nurserys.
Ok I had one of my containers germinate. It was Iberis taurica. This is pretty early for me, but we've had warm weather also.
Arachide, I had to chuckle when I saw your post. You said you were calmer this time around, and it reminds me of being pregnant. My first pregnancy, I was nuts...worrying about EVERYTHING! And then, of course, with my 2nd and 3rd sons, I was like, "been there, done that". Hopefully, I just have the first time jitters and next year I can just enjoy it. :-) Tamara
Tamara, how are your bachelor buttons after germinating in warmth, then getting hit with the cold temps and snow?
dcat, I feel your pain; WSing is great, but does'nt really give us much of a head start on annuals. I'm just doing perennials and biennials and am starting all my annuals under lights. But, I have heard some say that their winter sown annuals caught up with greenhouse grown plants very quickly, so keep thinking positively :)
I am batting zero, too. Hey guys spring training has started already. Rise and shine, wake up and smell the roses, grow like Topsy, you reap what you sow but where o' where are mine? Patti
Not sure, Tammylp...too cold to go and check! ;-) TAmara
Kinda hoped we were done with winter weather, but today it's snowing and sleeeting and gusting on my containers. They are in the leeward side of the house, that is to say, they're protected on three sides by house house and garage. I don't know the temp. - above freezing though because otherwise we wouldn't have this kind of weather.
xxxx, Carrie
|I just checked mine again, nothing.
hey there, hi there, ho there! I have lettuce and spinach that germinated today in the cold....but then that's what they normally do....but it's a start!...and will help make for for the disappearing convolvulus.
Maybe I should plant lettuce and spinach... then they'll grow?
xxx, C
gram... is that a "chick" from hens-N-chicks??
my mom gave me some when i moved out, 20+ yrs ago, and i still have them... i just keep taking them with each time i move.
what a lil cutie.
the ones in my back yard have lots of lil chicks on them.... havent really checked on the ones in the front yard yet.
terese
I cannot say for sure, Miss Gram, as I haven't been Out, but DH says "yes".
xxxx, Carrie
I still have no germination here.........*sigh*.....I thought my iceland or shirley poppies would have started sprouting by now, with those couple days of warm weather we had.
Grampapa, Cute little sempervivum seedling, I've been wanting to start some of those.
I bought some sempervivum seed this year, but will sow them direct when the weather allows. Maybe I should try a few with winter sowing. We still have winter here too. We got a sprinkling of snow last night.
Yup, got snow last night here too....
Woo-hoo! We dodged the snow....... AND I can see the tops of some of my WS containers finally! How can such a relatively short winter (didn't start here until near the end of January) seem to be so long?
Because we're almost up to the part where March goes out like a lamb and it doesn't look like it will? Because in Boston they closed the airport and the turnpike? And cancelled events all over the place? Because we haven't put away our sweaters yet?
xxxx, Carrie
Yes, yes, yes, and yes :-) Although I took a step of my own yesterday to make it feel more like spring is almost here by going out and manually removing the last 3 - 4 inches of snow from my WS containers. I couldn't stand it anymore! I rationalized it by telling myself that it would already be gone if DH hadn't allowed the snowblower to dump all over them when he was clearing the driveway this winter LOL.
Well, I am not bragging but I have lots of seedlings. But we have had temps in the mid 70 for several days, and I opened up some of the tops by enlarging some of the slits on the shoulders of the jugs, and I also took off some of the tape. So then we got this incredible change in weather with 27F this morning and more tomorrow. I decided that it would be too cold for my seedlings (it is also quite windy), so I covered everything with several layers of sheets and opened it up around 9 this morning. I could not bear loosing my seedlings after all I had done for/with them.
Did anyone else cover up their seedlings?
Hmmm.....I'm trying really hard not to be jealous of all of you that have seedlings already. We are still having winter here and I don't have a single touch of green yet. This is my first year for winter sowing and I am sure hoping it will work.....but as of yet....nothing has sprouted.
Bonny
Did your DH really do that? Hmmph! My DH wishes he had a snowblower....LOL. And our evil next door neighbor has one, a LOUD one, so he used it when the snow stopped - about 9 pm Friday night. DD had just been removed at 8 from a party that was supposed to go until 9, but DH needed to go to bed. So he could get up at 4 and go back to work. This fellow next door really drives us nuts. All summer, he mows his lawn, early and often, and late, too. Is twice a day good for your lawn?
xxx, C
carrielamont, no 2 times a day isn't good. I would start gathering information for an electric lawnmower, and making sure that he gets the literature in his mail box. If necessary, buy him a 1,000 foot of extension cord!!
Bonny, I am in 4b as well and I saw my first green April 11th last year. Don't loose hope.
Thanks, I am not tossing them yet.
