MG's and Fiber/Peat Pots

Someone posted a lovely photo of an MG climbing up the hanging basket supports in a previous thread....I remember seeing it. But finding it now would be nearly impossible. Maybe the photo owner will see this and re-post it.

Gourd - The Ipomoea purpurea from China is definitely a lighter color than yours,but most of the pinkish through reddish colored Ipomoea purpurea have traditionally been called "Crimson Rambler"...

But can I just take the peat pellet and put it in the paper pot (along with real soil of course)? I don't want to disturb the roots - and I am so pleased that so many have germinated. Meanwhile, it is another 6 weeks before the mgs can safely go outside. . . . Any suggestions?

I have purchased 8 packets of morning glory seeds to try (1st time) and I was trying to find out the proper latin names for all of them as many of the seed packets just have the common name on them. One of the packets says Ipomoea purpurpea Scarlet O'Hara. (packet spells Scarlet with one t). Ron, am I to understand from your last post that this might be incorrect and that it is actually an Ipomoea Nil?

The others I am trying are I. tricolor 'Light Blue Flash'; I. tricolor 'Blue Ensign'; 'Flying Saucers'; 'Star of Yelta'; 'Double Sunrise Serenade'; I. Imperialis 'Cameo Elegance' and a package of "Mixed Colors".

Joanne, that's a great question... I've been wondering the same thing about some of the store packets I've seen... Would you consider starting a thread with that topic? It's not that I have a problem with posts that get off topic (I do it often enough myself, just scroll up, LOL), but I think you might get more & better responses in a separate thread, and that way good information won't get lost in a thread with a propagation topic.

About the peat pellets... I don't know about morning glories, but other plants sometimes have a hard time getting their roots through the mesh that surrounds the pellet. To be on the safe side, I'd make a few tears in the mesh when transplanting, maybe even take the mesh off the bottom of the pellet.

Grow_Jo - Scarlett O'Hara should be spelled with 2 tt's as it was named after the character in "Gone with the Wind"...it should be an Ipomoea nil with a solid red throat and tube,but it is rarely labeled correctly and is often missing the original all red throat and tube...

The others that you mentioned are also often mislabeled as to their correct botanical identity...

"Mixed Colors" - could be anything but most likely any combination of the most common species Ipomoea nil,I.purpurea or I.tricolor

Thanks Ron. And sorry for highjacking the thread patootie - got all carried away at the mention of Scarlett O'Hara.

I Started useing styrofoam cups back in the 80s after trying to transplant MG from paper coffee cups and Disturbing the roots and seting the plant back i do all my Tomatoes in the Starfoam to lol i do 90 percent of my plants that way i cut off the bottom but leave the rest as a collar paul

That is interesting about the cup, and leaving the the rest as a collar. Before I added more soil to my back garden, I was concerened about planting some things in the ground, so.I experimented by cuttng holes in the container. Not only was it successful, but there were more blooms more often. I decided.okay..mabe lucky..try it again...and the same thing, but different species.. The first was a rangoon creeper, the second a cross vine. This makes me very curious.. I see a 3rd experiment in the future.

Yes, in CA I did that with some of the plastic liners, cut off the bottom and finally I got a bougie to bloom..lol The brug forum is where I learned that one, cutting off the bottoms of the five gallon containers, or even, making holes on the sides so the roots can go thru, then you can cut off the roots and pull the containers up for winter storage.. and deters the gophers.

Too much trouble for me now. but it is a great idea for those with energy..lol

After planting my MG seeds in 16 oz plastic cups, I made mini greenhouses for them with freezer bags. Now that they've started to germinate, I assume I should remove them from their little greenhouses? And is it necessary to put them in the plastic bags for the first place? My sincere apologies if this question has been asked & answered repeately; I've searched the MG forum and haven't been able to find an answer.

Grow_Joanne - The mini-greenhouses help to insure that the growing medium and the ambient humidity stays within healthy parameters and sometimes help to regulate the temperature...
once the seeds have germinated the coverings are not as crucial,but dry house air that is produced by the house heating system can dry out the seedlings and kill them quick...
the dry heated air dries the leaves out much(!) faster than the plant can possibly maintain hydration...misting can be somewhat helpful >but dry heated air is a plant killer...

Test your inside environment and see what type of results that you get...
