3rd Annual DGRU Trade lists for May 19th, 2007

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

I added a Have (possible for us to bring) to my list (two up from this) -- but thought I would put my new "wants" down here on their own so no one missed them!

Want to replace my flowering maple with Loropetalum chinense, fringe flower. Does not have to be a named cultivar. One with burgundy leaves would be lovely, but not necessary. We can give some rooted runners of the flowering maple if anyone wants it -- BELOW is a pic of one of the flowers (of course, much prettier on the plant and in the sunlight! -- the leaves are solid green and the plant is kinda sprawly if not tied up (which I did for a while, but I get tired of anything that does too well, I guess!

It's prolly too late for anyone to start cuttings, but if anyone has an extra Salvia argentea or S.verticillata 'Purple Rain' (purple reign?), my argentea finally didn't come back... I guess 5 or 6 years isn't too back for a biennial, though, eh?

Oh, and here's that link it wouldn't let me post, to the Ledger's Iris... same log-in, same everything, now it's letting me paste. GO figure.

Hey wcgypsy:
If it's not too greedy, I will also take a Salvia scabra -- says they stay short?

I was just going to suggest that my lemon geranium might make a substitute for your Mabel Gray when I noticed you already requested one. Here is a pic of what it's doing right now! (With my nutmeg-scented from YOU last year, in the near left side!) It's actually pinker than it looks in the pic.

I believe there are several rooted pieces here that could be split apart when we dig, so others are welcome to speak up!

Thanks, 'spin,
I think you may need several scabras...they don't get all that large and it's not like a bright color, light color, so it's more of a blender....I tend to plant in 3's if you have room. Wish I had argentea or Purple Rain for you. The Mabel Grey gets very large, shrub-like with large leaves. I usually have the regular lemon geranium, but it sneaked away when I wasn't looking, hard to imagine, they're all so trouble free. I used to do a lot of scenteds, move them in and out of statewith me, but through the years I focused on other things and kinda let them go. I'll never let nutmeg die out. It's one of my faves, sun or PS. I have another one I like that may or may not be 'filbert',makes a big mound, pinkish red flowers should you want some of that also.
Sherry

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Sherry, I will take a start of the "filbert" -- whatever it was I put camera-side of the nutmeg-scented in above pic, didn't make it. Think it was a yellow-flowered salvia hybrid, don't think it was from last year's RU. But the three (yes, there is a Lady Plymouth BEHIND the lemon-scented up there) Pelargoniums doing so well there now bodes well for another in the row!

I am also keen to come up with something that is fair-sized, but stops growing at about 4x4x4' or a little taller, looks nice at least MOST of the year; takes morning shade, high reflected light, overhead sun in summer, late afternoon rays all year -- doesn't want a lot of water... oh yeah and flowers in the blue to lavender family... It's for the front "public" spit of garden -- the Hebe has gotten just TOO BIG.

You know, maybe I will put your three S.scabras at the sunnier end of that 'spit' or peninsula bed, and see what occurs to Blooms and me with the (suddenly empty) space behind it...

Has anyone said they had Penstemons (particularly blue-to-orchid-to-magenta ones) to bring?

'spin - I have a ceanothus that is almost exactly what you describe, but mine is three years old. Have to look up the name - don't know if you want to wait that long! Would you like to see a pic?

I tried some starts of my Margarita BOP penstemon, but they didn't take (none of the others did, either). :-( Anybody want to give me lessons? I hear everyone doing starts for this and that, seeds, etc. I just have no luck with this.

Kathleen

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Kathleen, I saw the BOP at M&M nursery last week. I had never heard of it until you mentioned it at my home. I've never had luck rooting penstemons either, but I tried something diffferent last fall and it worked....layering!! Yup, just take a stem and lay it on the soil and put a small rock on the stem where it meets the soil. Let it root well before cutting it off the mother plant.

Donna

I think I tried that, too - but it's worth another effort. Thanks for reminding me. Of course, that means finding somewhere it can root. They are so crowded now, I don't know if there is any dirt!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

If anyone has a spare white BOP, please please please can I have some? Lost mine in the frost.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

White BOP? Or white penstemon? That sounds very pretty.

Penstemon 'Margarita BOP' comes from the Las Pilitas (Santa Margarita) nursery, where it grew at the "Bottom Of (our) Porch." http://www.laspilitas.com/plants/471.htm

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

It's a white BOP. A friend sent me one and I'm so depressed that I lost it. It was just starting to get a new leaf too. :-(

'spin, here is a picture of the ceanothus 'Wheeler Canyon.' I had to increase the shadows in the photo to get the blue closer to how it actually looks. This is one that is very deep blue. It stays a beautiful deep green all year. Suffered a little tip/bud damage in January, but looks fine now. Once established, needs extra water only during hot summer temps.

LOVE your entry garden! However, I think my HOA will like a mass of Lavenders better than ceonothus, and I will intersperse with the S.scabras!

Weegy, your friend may have called it a white BOP, but all "real" BOPs are cuttings from the original plant with electric blue flowers with some rose in the throats... just to help you find a replacement! You might look at P.albidus or P.pallidus (former looks like it has larger flowers and denser on a more vertical spike). I didn't find any white Penstemon heterophyllus (main parent of BOP) on first page of Google Image Search, but that would be another to ask for it as.

So, I am looking for Lavandula starts, now!

Oh, pooh on HOAs!

OK, I have a lavender called 'Fairy Wings' that is very pretty, and a couple I got from drdon last year. If I knew how to start them, you'd be welcome. Any tips? If I brought fresh cuttings to the RU could you use them? I SO want to share!

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

You know what? I better pass on the fresh cuttings (or really anything that is gonna need pampering beyond twice weekly water!) because shortly after the RU, DH and I are headed out Blooms' way for 3 weeks of playing on the Colorado Plateau! Maybe if June doesn't get altogether HOT like last year, we (or I) can arrange a visit to collect cuttings, or maybe in the fall if DrDon tells us that is better for starting babies!

You're welcome anytime, 'spin.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Advice I've seen on lavandula cuttings is that they need a *heel* on the cutting, as in pulling the piece from the main stem rather than cutting, so that it takes a piece of main stem, or *heel*, with it.
Photos cannot do B.O.P.justice..the coloring has that *oil spill* effect....iridescent. Marvelous...prettiest of pretties.

San Diego, CA

Here's a big suprise, I'll bring some passion vines if they root up ok. This years variety should be P. 'Blue Horizon' and maybe, just maybe P. 'Witchcraft'
Mark

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Aw, Jeeeeez, Mark,
Don't I have anything in my lists you want?! How about another cestrum nocturnum? Anythings you're looking for that I might find amongst my pots? I want a witchcraft if you can think of anything you want that Ican trade for.
Sherry

San Diego, CA

Sherry, is that the night blooming Jasmine?
Mark

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, Mark, you got one last year so I thought you might want a mate for it?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Mark, on second thought maybe you're checking to make sure you don't get another one! Scent is overwhelming to some, I love it.
Sherry

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Don, did you ever root any of that ground cover for me?

San Diego, CA

I love it too. Mark

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I have several seedlings of P. Constance Elliot http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54128/index.html if anyone is interested.

I also have 2 or 3 Red Shrimp plants available also.

Donna

List of trades.

Sorry, drdon, your matilija poppies didn't make it. :-(
Hope someone else had better luck.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Donna, I would love a Constance Elliot. Kathleen, I dug 12-13 for Don and I think 6 are still looking okay..we'll see.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Sherry. I just checked it again and found a tiny little green growth at the base, so it might be a good one after all.

'spin, if Blooms does manage to bring the lemon monarda, I would like one, please.

Looking good Anna!

see you soon,
don

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I know you all will have the best time! I almost made it to this RU with Zuzu but my boy is graduating from law school that week so I will be in NYC.

Have a great time everyone!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh Kell, I was so hoping you were going to be able to make it this year. I know that your sons graduation is by far more important than our RU, but I know in your heart that your sorry it's at the same time.

Have a safe trip and hope to be able to finally meet you in the future. :-)

Donna

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Donna,

I would like to try P. Constance Elliot if you still have one available. Also, a shrimp plant - John loved that plant, but it didn't make it, so we'll pick another location.

Thanks,
Kathleen

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you, Donna! I would love to meet you too!! Maybe next time. I know you will have a ball there.

Hey Dr. Don, I saw this salvia the other day at Regans. Remember when we went there? The whole place is in full bloom! Anyway, do you have this one? I had never seen it before so I was hoping it was one you wanted. Of course I haven't seen most available salvias so that means nothing!

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya Kell!!!

So sorry you won't be with us down here, but I'm jazzed for you and DH that your son is graduating. Now he can support you guys.....lol.

That looks like S. africana-lutea and has always been on my list of Salvias to get. Regan's is really one of those nurseries that needs to be visited often, it's just a shame we don't really have places like that down here.

hugs from both of us,
don
