3rd Annual DGRU Trade lists for May 19th, 2007

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

Hiya everyone,

Please place your trade lists here on this thread, make your deals here and keep updating as often as you are able so that those who are interested in your plants know that you know they're interested. Hope everyone is well and looking forward to some warm weather coming soon....

best to all,
don

drdon's trade list as of March 5, 2007

3 5gal Rosa californica.....................................................Native California Rose

I have a list of Salvias I can make cuttings from and root them for folks just like last year and the year before.....please let me know which species Salvias are on your personal wish lists and there is a pretty doggone good chance I'm growing it.

This year I'm also sharing a number of species Morning Glories and their relatives. Several rare and/or endangered species Ipomoeas, Merrimeas, Operculinas, Turbinas, and a large selection of others. Any unusual stuff on your personal lists and, once again, I may be growing it. Those who are interested in plants from this collection will be part of a seed-saving co-operative to preserve genetic material of some rare plants.

I've got 2 5gal Dahlia imperialis or Mexican Dahlia Trees available

I will also have a number of Alocasias, Colocasias, and Xanthosomas available, I just need to see them emerge first and will post availability soon afterwards.

I will have a number of Gloxinia sylvatica available in 4-6in pots.

I will have several rooted cuttings of Salvia divinorum for serious collectors only.

There will also be a number of Cucurmas, and ginger cultivars available. I will have names and quatities when they fully emerge.

This year my interests are mostly in getting my greasy paws on some more Romneya coulteri (Matilija Poppy), Any Echium species, and Salvia dombeyi.

look forward to seeing you in a couple of months,
don

Of all the salvias that you so generously shared with me, only two survived the frost as well as the discolor that will be coming your way. (I promise not to forget it this year.) Romneyas huh. There is a big stand of them in a canyon on my way to work. Suppose anyone would notice a tall, blond, middle aged woman digging in the canyon and dragging out 6 foot poppy plants?!

I guess I had best go see what I have left in the garden and get my list up.
Take care,
Janice

Red Hot Pokers hellnzn11
Fuchsia triphylla- Honeysuckle fuchsia
Passifloria Caerulea- This plant can be a thug, pretty though.
Mexican Sage hellnzn11
to be continued

Don, are you sure you want a Matilija? I put one in a few years ago. The first year it was about 3 feet tall, not too many flowers. Year 2 it reached EIGHT FEET, had tons of beautiful flowers and started to spread like crazy. My yard is just too small for something like this - so I dug it out last summer, but it keeps coming back. I just noticed more sprouts last week. I don't think they transplant well this time of year, but if you'd like some let me know.
Ann

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I'm offering lots of cactus.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Don, I have at least one Matilija poppy sprout (good term, Ann, I never know what to call them). I'll try potting it up and see if it survives. They are very tricky. We transplanted four of them last fall - one died, two are struggling, and the fourth one put up it's own sprout almost immediately. Las Pilitas tells me they sometimes grow leaves for a year but never bloom, so it will be a year or so before we know.

I also lost all but two of the salvias from last year - the bright red one (forget the name) is gorgeous - it's nestled in some boulders and really sets them off. The lavender is blooming, too.

Louise - do you have any little cactus that is suitable for a small container?

Kathleen

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Yes Kathleen, I actually have a pot with a few planted in it. But there are others too. I'll bring what I have and you are welcome to what you want.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks very much. My DH likes cactus/succulent containers and one of ours bit the dust in the big freeze.

Kathleen

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Ok, I'll bring them and you can pick through them.

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

Kathleen, you can have your pick of cactus from the rather prodigious cactus garden here at the ranch as well.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

My cup runneth over! Thanks, indeed, drdon, John will be pleased, too.

K

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Kathleen, you can have ALL my cactus! Now, how do you dig some of these boogers out without getting stabbed!??

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Body armor LOL! Lots of leather! (Not kidding about the leather)

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

Is anyone interested in Jerusalem Artichokes (AKA Sunchokes) ?

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Hey Kanita, I looked at my Kaneetah and I'll finally have some for you. I can spare a few so they're yours. Here's the link to it if you want to see how pretty it is.

No, no, no, weege - how does HE dig it up? Are they really big?
No prickly pear, please - we have a ton of it I would love to get rid of.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

HE won't be digging...SHE will! This is my gig! Lucky SHE!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Nah, I was thinking about my HE! He's the real cactus lover and if he wants them, he can dig! Don't you go hurting yourself.

Space for my list......in progress

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Kathleen, really pleeeeeeez take some! I'm just going to chuck them if no one takes them and that I hate to do. There's some nice ones, but I've found a new love...plumerias! Need the room for more!!!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Don't beg weegy! Yes, we'd love to have them.

I lost four 2nd year plummies to the big freeze and I'll have to start over again. My DH keeps groaning, since for one reason or another I've never been successful with them. But I will keep trying, because they are my absolute favorite favorite favorite flower! Our wedding in Hawaii was loaded with them - the minister said, "But I can get you some really nice flowers." LOL

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

LOL! Well they're all yours then Kathleen!

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Blooms and I will be coming!

Last weekend DH helped me move several (half-dozen? maybe more, some wanted to split apart...) volunteer Leonotis menthifolia from the 2" of adobe clay they'd come up in, into a deeper prepared bed -- with two months of [apparently] warm weather, they should make some decent roots. One large one, several medium (will prolly bring in gallon pots, but may be only 6"-pot sized plants) and several small. The PLANT btw, grow at least 3-4' wide and to 6' tall, with whorled orange flowers typical of Leonotis -- but very mint-or-salvia like leaves. [1 to wcgypsy]

Can bring several volunteer coral Salvia coccinea plants, from 6" to ??? however tall they get by May 18.

Can try again to bring volunteer shrimp plants, standard no-name Justicia sp. -- they are coming up everywhere, and maybe this year they won't wilt so dreadfully as they did last JULY!

Also due to early (less HOT) schedule of this RU, Blooms plans to bring some lemon Monarda from Utah [1, wc] (assuming they let her cross in with it, but have not heard of a problem)... maybe some other things... I will update as I hear more.

Can bring lemon geranium (Pelargonium) if anyone wants. [1, wc]

Weeg, I would love the Hypoestes aristata, and some of the Linaria (to fill in where we take the Leonotis out of the bed they are "place-holding" in).

'spin, lost my post to you somehow, will try again....Weeg doesn't have the hypoestes and linaria....I do and you're very welcome to some. I would really like a leonotis menthifolia (small is fine, they grow fast), lemon geranium and one of Blooms' lemon monarda.
Sherry

Sorry, where are my manners....please?

Sorry, I am always getting you two mixed up (in threads, not in person!) -- starts with "w", ends with "y", what can I tell you?!!

You are down for at least a medium L.menthifolia and one each of the others! I will edit when I have a few more takers. Blooms mentioned something else besided the Monarda, as well, but I can't remember what it was, so do keep an eye on my entry for updates!

'spin...thank you!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi to all of you that I have not met yet... I am not from CA!!!! but I am addicted to roses and thanks to Zuzu, Steph, Dovey, Kell and many others who took me under their wings I am planting a rose garden this year!!! neddless to say I love these ladies and would love to meet them.... so I am coming to your RU in May....actually I feel very special since Dr Don also invited me.... oh well he is inviting everyone!!!

ok... I just have to make sure my friend that moved to San Diego last year can at least get me from the airport... if she can I am booking my trip ... I am thinking of flying on Thurs May 17 have a day to walk around and maybe see some gardens and saturday have some fun with all you guys and come back on Sunday... for good food and good company... nothing is too far!
my plan is to fly Boston -San Diego - but I have never been in San Diego so I need some help moving around there... now I need some suggestions about places to go on Friday, and also I need to either follow someone from San Diego to Temecula saturday! any suggestions????

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Kassia!
You probably should write to the "3rd Annual SO CAL RU MAY 19, 07" thread -- it is STICKY at the top of California Gardening... This one is for plant trades specifically, and May is too late for bare-root transplanting in Southern California, so I don't *think* you'll be taking roses home!

I can't believe you are coming to California/San Diego for only two days!!! You should go to Balboa Park and the SD Zoo -- either of which is a full day program! The Zoo is also a botanical garden (with labels and everything)... the Park has a large conservatory and a Japanese garden (separate admissions) and other free and pay parts that include plantings and groves of this and that.

There are other gardens and parks in SD and SD county, for sure. You really should try to expand your vacation by a few days!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Ok, I will do that!!!! thanks....

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Thought I would bump the TradeList up, by asking if we have any NEW California gardeners coming to RU?

I have several older versions of the Western Gardening Book... Not as complete as the new one(s) of course, but they were "The Bible" in their times! And the price is right (GOTTA get some of this STUFF outta my house!).

I also forgot to mention I will be bringing Ziplocs of seeds: Leonotis menthifolia, Nigella that I tried to select for blues, and Lychnis coronaria. Have plenty, but ya'll can speak now if want your name on some. Sorry for all the people I never send them to last year! These are one year older, now, but I bet they still have good germination %.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Editing this to say, I got my monkeyFlower, DrDon is going to provide me a Black Sage... I would like plants or seeds of annual monkeyflowers, devil's claw, other xeric chaparral types.

I am looking for a couple of natives, small shrubs, for my chaparral bed. Namely sticky monkeyflower [and a black sage or black sage hybrid that drdon is gonna give me!] Very happy to take native chaparral flowers and LOW-in-height annuals off your hands as well!

I am pretty short of extras this year...can you believe that!! I am using all that I have at the moment to fill my beds for the garden tour and having to buy more plants. ugh!

I will have to wait until times gets closer to see if any of my seedlings make it this year. Keep your fingers crossed.

Donna

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya spin,

I've got some black sage for you.....you can take as many cuttings as you'd like or I'll give you some seed. Check one off your list and we're looking forward to seeing both you and Blooms.

best,
don

Hey Don...don't you love us anymore??? ;o(

Oh, Cottage_Rose, what a beautiful bouquet!!

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

New "have" at bottom! READ and re-READ occasionally -- this is the one I will update!

Bumping up again: after seeing Rusty and Zuzu's Scilla Peruviana, I would love to try this in my 'blue garden' which has some empty spots because the caryopteris didn't make it through the winter. Or another Caryopteris (or both!)

I bought my sticky monkeyflower at Tree of Life Nursery last week (a *burgundy* one!) and it has already opened dozens of flowers, yay. Also got a Phacelia campanularia (annual that should re-seed, knock wood), but would be interested in other low natives OR some Devil's Claw -- which grew just fine a couple years ago but didn't re-seed, boo.

Wanted: Scilla peruviana
Devil's Claw (plants or seeds)
Low-growing CA natives (annuals?)
Lavandula plants (lavender)

Planning to bring home!: Black sage from DrDon
Hypoestes and linaria from wcgypsy
Pink scented Pelargonium from wcgypsy
2 or 3 Salvia scabra also from wcgypsy
Rhizome of different iris from wcgypsy -- Sherry and I could just exchange our haul in the parking lot, eh?
Marjoram from kanita!

Bringing: Leonotis menthifolia -- 1 to wcgypsy, 1 to haroldS
Justicia brandegana (shrimp plants) ???
Pelargonium crispum (lemon geranium) -- 1 to wcgypsy
Salvia coccineas (coral color) -- 1 to kaperc, 1 to haroldS
Rhizomes of Iris japonica Ledger's Variety ??? -- 1 'wedge' to wcgypsy

Also bringing ziplocs of seeds or seedpods of L.menthifolia, Nigella (selected for blue), and Lychnis coronaria... should be enough not to have to speak for ahead of time (but you can!)

Also, still have those older edition Western Garden books for you new-to-California-or-the-west gardeners!
