Haves, wants for spring swap

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Sheesh, I feel like a heel for posting a wish list considering that I cannot even make it to the swap, but if you need to find homes for your excess planties, these are the kinds of things that I could use to fill in my naked beds and I promise to give them a good home:

- Any types of ferns
- Hens & Chicks (any sedums)
- Yucca
- Hosta (especially var. blues and greens)
- Definitely some delicious Greek Oregano cuz I’m all out! (any & all herbs)
- Any and all poppies (especially Himalayan blues)
- Elephant Ears
- Artemesia (actually anything blue or grey in color)
- Anything with height and tolerant of Partial Sun
- Fragrant

See all of that open space in this bed? I need to camouflage that ugly wood pile...

Sally, I'd be happy to try one of your little holly trees, but if somebody else can give them homes that's fine also, because I don't know if they'd survive for me... I'm not sure that I can coddle them sufficiently unless I pot them up or something over the winter...

On the other hand... has anyone spoken for your "bubby bush" (Calycanthus)? There's a shrub I've been eyeing for a long time in the gardening catalogues... and I'd be willing to coddle it as much as necessary!

I'm also hoping you've got me down for a clump of your louisiana iris. :-)

Wrightie, with everything you've been dealing with, we'd be glad to try to lift your spirits with a goodie box. I'll put your name on an oregano pot. I appreciate Happy's willingness to ferry plants back for you -- thanks, Happy! :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

My pleasure!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

She'll get a big fat kiss from me (whether she wants it or not), I can assure you!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Well that got a good laugh out of me!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Someone remind me when all the trading is done, and I will be glad to send Wrightie some of my leftover plants as well.

Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

wrightie- I have ostrich and sensitive fern. may have extra. will check for other things. you don't even have to kiss me! but I know how you feel- like I wanted to kiss my contractor when he said yes the siding was included( we did not make a $16 K mistake)

critter- these hollies just can't stay where they were anyway. they like to spring up next to rocks etc making it hard to get them out successfully, but necessary. I would keep them out for the winter. Yes a calycanthus for you too. Bet you a dollar your mom (if she's in the age ballpark of mine) says'Oh yes, ladies used to wrap those in hankies and bring them to church." But I am not the louisiana iris : ^ ( I have siberian, bringing a lot of that.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Right! Siberian Iris! That's what I meant -- sorry for the confusion. Siberian Iris likes moisture, right? Either way, I'll have a good spot for it!

I don't think Calycanthus is a Wisconsin plant, but I'll bet my MIL (raised in the Carolinas) knows them. :-)

I'll do my best with the little holly! I know what you mean about little trees springing up... lots and lots of little "volunteer" wild cherry and mulberry seedlings here. I know there are some bigger saplings back in the fence row (sassafrass too) but I'm battling the poison ivy back there, and I'm very allergic, so I'm not volunteering to dig them. Hopefully they're big enough to survive the brush killer spray, but after several years of selective spraying I decided I just have to spray *everything* back there if I want to knock out the poison ivy.

But if anybody is really interested, I'll scout around the yard and see if I can find some little seedlings... cherry seedlings (or what I think are wild cherry seedlings) are numerous but tiny, however, the mulberry seedlings sometimes escape my attentions with weeding, and there might be one or two of those if I beat the bushes for them.

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

critter...i feel your pain with poison ivy...i get it bad too....trying to recover from a bout now....we got some goats this weekend & they are suppose to consider poison ivy vines a treat...i'll let you know :-)
you can tell your neighbor they are exotic dogs (at least two think they are dogs!)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

happy- I have hardy cyclamen : ) but not enough to spare : ( --I'm a meanie. It's kind of neat but so small and the blooms face down so not much to write home about. Right now nothing showing. Still not ready to dig it all up for you- Ask next year! I think this pic is it- if I can make out the thumbnail correctly.
critter--I have the siberian in couple sites and all fine. Denser in the moist spot, I'd say. Yes the Calycanthus is a southern good ol favorite I believe! thats how I got it, by way of inlaws from Charlotte area. All due respect, keep your cherry, mulberry and sassafras away from me!! I have all I can stand : * ) You'll never spray enough to totally eliminate!

lar what can I trade for a goat???

i think my husband would take anything...one of them is a 2yr old former house goat...she just jumped in the car while the others were being rounded up....too funny :0)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

SallyG -- no worries. I'd say your a few years from having enough cyclamen to even think about a trade -- but I'm so encouraged to see yours look healthy and content. I guess I'll try getting more from Parks, and be really careful this time not to let them get wet over the winter.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I have plenty of yucca, Wrightie. Be glad to send you some.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Brent, the "unknown" DL in that planter opened a bloom today... it's a 'Happy Returns'! One of my favorites; you'll love it.

Larlienda, hope you get over your poison ivy soon... I know how miserable it is! LOL at "exotic dog" goats.... hey, if they eat the poison ivy, might be worth a try... bet they'd prefer to eat DLs and tomato plants though

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

On my "have" list (post 3530528) I originally listed that I had 3 unidentified day lilies, but now since someone mentioned Lilies of the Valley, I'm thinking that's what they are. I've changed the list and anyone who's interested can check them out Saturday. So much to do and so little time!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Wrightie,
I too have "toddler" yuccas (low growing form) - which was ID'd as Yucca recurvifolia http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/68756/index.html I thought it had all been moved to a hill and I've got youngun's coming up where there not wanted in my yard.
If you're able to root hard wood cuttings - I'll be happy to bring a lavender variety and rosemary - nices scents on all.
Might even have some spare Hens and Chicks
Interested in any vining types w/scented blooms?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantell: I would love love love a Yucca recurvifolia if you have any extras!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

No problem, Happy...I will do a final check for these Friday night...I do NOT want them in my front yard...they may be low growing but they do get size on them!!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantell, that is so sweet of you! I will take whatever 'leavins' you have as long as Happy is ready willing and able to cart them back with her, but I really really really do not want to be a bother to anyone!

xoxo
moi

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ummm....seriously NO bother...the yuccas would get pulled any-who-how....I seriously have a lot of lavender (my fav scent) and the Rosemary bush despite being hacked repeatedly continues to put on new growth - so as long as you know how to root them (I'm clueless) then I'm thrilled to bring them. Obviously the Yuccas that ate Virginia have roots already.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

This is my year for learning and trying my hand at rooting cuttings. I've had some success so far with brugmansias, so I'm ready to move on to other planties. =0

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantell: Has your rosemary proven hardy? I just read that it is easy to propagate (see http://www.floridata.com/ref/R/rose_off.cfm) , so I'd love to try a tiny cutting. I keep killing off rosemary plants. I have a new small plant (I think it is Rosemary Arp or Hill Hardy) if anyone would like to try a cutting of that.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I've had this rosemary for at least 2 years - I'd love to tell you the name of it...but sadly, I have no earthly idea..LOL. I buy them when Walmart gets them in the spring (I had them once before and got rid of them not realizing that I loved their scent and that they COULD be pruned...LOL). I'm going to book mark your link. I'll bring you some cuttings, definately!!

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm bringing 2 rosemary's that I started from a plant too. Anyone's welcome to them.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

silly me- I have a big rosemary that is really in need of hacking- I just thought there was some secret to rooting them. I can bring a hand full for anyone to eat, root or whatever. No name variety but has lasted many winters on my south side of house. Chantell, I really hope you didn't sweat over cuttings for me.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, I'd be so happy with all your rosemary cuttings -- I keep killing rosemary, and it is my favorite herb. We had a wonderful rosemary plant for many years, beautiful shape and flavor, and then it died one tough winter. I've kept buying plants but can't succeed with them. I think it is psychological, because my mother's name was Rosemary. Anyway, I'm going to keep trying.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi All,
I will run around the yard tomorrow and see what I have. I know I have at least 3 white crape myrtles... One is spoken for... already. I have some hostas green with white I can get... LOL I will also more then likely go to Lowes before we get going to get some flowers to bring... Hey did I tell anyone how I am excited ???? well I am...LOL I cant wait... I am like a little child... ok so I am an old lady but hey did I tell you all how excited I am?????
Ok BIG hugs to everyone...
Sue

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Susan: Please DON'T go buy plants. That would spoil the fun! Just bring yourself. Nothing else is needed. I have plenty of plants for the both of us. In fact, I'm not going to have time to label my plants, so if you can help me with that it would take a huge weight off of me. I was figuring I'd do it after I arrived . . ..

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

This morning, so as not to end up with "crunch time" Friday night, I sorted out ALL the plants I have promised people ahead of time and put each person's "order" in a separate tray with a sign in one of the pots with the person's name and all the plants I have agreed to give them.
When I load up my car, I will transfer each person's plants to a shallow cardboard box that can be trashed at harts.

I just operate better when I know certain things are done ahead of time.
Less stress--------------Less mess----------more peace! :o)

Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: That sounds so nice. I am high stress, lots of mess -- but a little peace too!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... it'll be down to the wire here with preparations, I think! I've got a lot of things potted up already, at least, but there's so much more I'd like to do. Jim realized how much I still had to catch up on in the garden, so he offered to run our nephew home tomorrow on his own. My dad will meet them at Somerset and ferry him along from there, which will save Jim nearly 4 hours of driving, so that'll work out.

So, look for more posts from me Thursday night as I figure out what else is out there, LOL.

:-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG, Gita...you go girl...I'm so not the organized type...the rest of you that are....I'm in awe over you!! I'll be lucky if I'm not doing it Sat. morning...sheez!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Well, I had a few things potted up before, but yesterday was my crunch time. I pushed Ric out the door coffee in hand and said dig. He spent a couple of hrs out there before taking me to Dr Appt. When we got home I grabbed son Josh and turned Ric loose to go mow. After a while with Josh digging I switched them out again and sent Josh to mow so Ric could pot up for me. Man I'll tell you it's really hard all that walking and pointing, and keeping the work force going. ;} LOL
Today I will be marking and organizing that I can do without help. But I still have a few things to dig up, guess Josh will be busy again tonight after work. He will be thrilled, NOT. LOL
My have list will need up dated too. I might do some of that today but may wait till I'm completely finished and do it tomorrow.
Really looking forward to meeting everybody,

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly: I can't wait the meet the famous Ric of potting shed fame. You'd better be careful that someone doesn't try to swap for him! Is Josh coming too?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Happy, No he is "not" for swap. Much too handy and he cooks too. With all the herbs Critter is bring I thought that Ric might really like spending some time with her.
Josh will only come if one of you is good looking, single and in your 20's.
Oh you will need to be an outdoor active type, too. If any of you fit that description let me know and maybe we could swap. He is very, very handy and good looking, too. LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Sounds like others are in the same mental zone as me. I did start to presort some requests and plan boxes, and trying to remember last minute digs. It reminds me of how I prepare for a trip- if I get 'done' 'early' then I have time to fret and do more last minute. I expect I will grab a few 'mystery guests' on friday! I'll be bringing an assortment of boxes, buckets, bags, bins...........
hart- the tiger lilies look awesome, five big ones and some bulbils for next year.
Gita- actually, there may not be much to trash if everybody needs boxes to take them home , too.

Holly- did you ask for blue creeping phlox? Josh sounds like a dream guy! Ric- what a good sport for digging! with all the rest he's done!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sally, Just looked over your list, yes I am looking for Creeping Phlox (any color), I'd be interested in the blue eyed grass and if you have any more of the dogwoods. One of the dogwoods you gave me did survive but I would take another one or two if they are available.
Yes, my whole family has been very, very supportive the last six weeks, but I am getting stronger and more flexible every week.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Does anyone want Walking Onion? My plants (new last year) have big bulbils at the tops now that can be broken off and planted, and I'd be happy to bring some. If the tops get bent over to the ground, the bulbils -- some of which are sprouting already -- will take root and form new plants, so over time this plant can "walk" itself across your garden, hence the name. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/31430/index.html

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Critter, I might be interested in that, I will have to ask Ric if he wants them. I think the two of you would have a lot to talk about at the swap.

This thread is taking so long to load with my high speed, I can't imagine what the people with dialup are going through. I'm going to start a new thread.
