Haves, wants for spring swap

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK!

Taking one of my many breaks during the day....that's why nothing else gets done! I so enjoy this Forum and am sooo looking forward to the Swap, I can't help but check my "C" about 4 times a day.

My HUGE (55 people and 12 years and going) cookout is only 2 weeks away, and I am stressing about it every day----so, what do I do? Play on DG! AND--work 1PM-10PM at the HD. That kills a day!

OK! For those that have just asked.............

Hart--Chr. Pacificum is a "GO". I have several 6-packs. Just moved them under my patio roof. It has been raining today and more promised for tomorrow. I think they are getting too wet and some of the cuttings are rotting off. Can't hope for 100% with cuttings anyway. So--a 6-pack might be a 5-pack--or a 4-pack. Who knows and who cares????.....:o)
NO! As far as I know they do not seed themselves at all but the clump sure spreads over the years. Must be roots or rhizomes--or something. I used to have this Mum in my East-facing bed years and years ago. It is the one I took cuttings from that we grew at the Growers i was working for. I don't remember how this whole clump got "terminated"???? Hmmmmmmmmm.......I think I moved it and it did not like it a whole lot.
It is so easy to propagate! Like all mums--they like to be pinched back in the Spring. Just stick the pinched off pieces in some soil and you will have many new plants. That is what I did with the ones I am bringing. I am glad to "resurrect" this wonderful plant. Never see it anywhere for sale any more! I tend to hang on to things......

Happy---Same for you! Pacificums and a couple of Pear Tomatoes. You are on my list!
Hopefully, I should also be able to bring you some Camellia cuttings. Then, maybe not yet. The new growth is just about 3"-4" long. Need to wait until the bottom of the new growth starts hardening off a bit. Mike is waiting also....If not now, then I will mail you some. Please remind me!

I forgot to add in my last Post that i also have a few 4" pots of Cilantro growing (from seed). Can't say they are "taking off" since I transplanted them into the pots. I think this, and reg. Parsley, just take their time....I may not even bring them. The way they look, I would not want any myself...

This is good! I am adding you all to my list of who wants what and when I have it all completed, I will label each person's "wants" with a big piece of tape and keep them separate from the other plants for trade.

If we do this next year--where ever--I will (hopefully) have dug up and divided all my Stella d'Oros and will have plenty to share.

I better quit this for now! My break is getting too long.....

Gita

Larienda,

It is a "GO" for you on the Tomatoes and the Daturas. Added your "wants" to my list. You may well go home with more than one.
See my Post above.

Thanks, Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Everyone -- I keep saying this, but please check my list of plants to see if there is anything you want. I'll try to bring a bit of everything, but I can make sure there is enough for everyone if you let me know in advance!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I am *not* bringing a lot of tomatoes. I'll have some cherry tomatoes left over, and I'm bringing "regular" tomato plants for you and for Happy. However, since the swap is about a month after normal tomato planting time around here, I've been giving away my extras locally so they can be planted sooner rather than bringing lots of little rootbound plants to the swap. My remaining extras went up to Pittsburgh yesterday for my mom & my brother.

Gita, if garlic chives would do it for you, I'd be happy to bring you a clump... they've self-sowed beyond their bounds again, and I need to dig some up. They're the ones with somewhat flat leaves, very tasty IMO.

Happy, if you dig & divide the Hosta 'Krossa Regal' and have extra, I'd love a piece for my MIL... it's one that we considered but didn't end up ordering for the co-op... got her a 'Komodo Dragon' instead, but I'm still loving the shape of the 'KR'. If you still have an extra piece of the variegated solomon's seal available, that's another one I'd love to try... but if your extras have been spoken for, no worries, I'll find it elsewhere.

Hart, I'd love a clustered bellflower. Would you like peach-leafed bellflower in trade? http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/35/index.html I've got some 1 year old but still small seedlings that I WS'd last year... I put them into 4 inch pots, and I think they're finally starting to grow bigger.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG, happy...was there anything of your's I didn't ask for...geez I feel like Miss Piggie. Just an FYI in case someone else was asking for something and my name was put down by accident...my yard is full sun with a couple of areas that have part sun for a short time frame during the day.. I have no shade...sad, but true. Course my Cactus are very happy with that full sun...LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Chantell, I think you and I have similar yards! My only shade is in front of the house (still gets sun until at least 11 am), and there's an area near the trees in back that gets a little mid to late afternoon shade. That's good, because it means you can probably find a spot for any extras that jump into my boxes as I'm digging last minute divisions out back!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

Is the Garlic Chives different from regular chives in flavor? I would only use them in a salad or on potatoes--or such. I don't mind a small starter clump of those Thank you. Hart said she would give me some of hers--the regular ones.

I have 2 people interested in the Tomatoes, so I will bring some along. They are growing excellently.

Today is make Pickles day!!! Won't have time any later. Friday is "make Potato salad" day.
It has now been raining for 2 days. Great for the Garden. We sure needed it! I hope Saturday will be dry.......

Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Miatablu: We have an entire hill of ground ivy that my step son is going to pull out so I can put nicer stuff in it. Is this really what you want? I can bring you a garbage bag or two or three or four full of it. I'm sure it would be easy enough to transplant -- you could even cut it into short pieces and propagate it if you were so inclined. It is, of course, invasive.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter -- Got you covered for Solomon's Seal and Krossa Regal. Anyone else?

Chantell -- Please keep asking! It's so easy to care of all this in advance.

Everyone -- Please, if you think I've promised to bring you something, check my posting of haves and wants above. It is Post #3486706. If I didn't put it down, that was just because I forgot. I'll try to check all the posts one last time before Saturday, but I'd really love it if you'd just clue me in that I forgot to transfer a request.

Many thanks.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ah Critter, thank you....you too, happy!!! If anyone has requests that aren't in my post at bottom please let me know as well. I probably won't check DG Sat. before I leave - Friday will be the last time, most likely.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Larlienda: I just noticed that your old growth rose likes shade. Can I have a cutting, please? Many thanks!

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

sure can happy!

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Happy, I'll take some of your Ivy. One small bag will do.
Larlienda, can I also get a cutting of your rose while you are cutting for Happy?

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

no problem!

i'll take the cuttings probably on friday

miata...what kind of plants can you do your bonsai magic on?
the picture you showed looked like it had grown that way for years...how long does it take you?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Miatablu, that's so pretty! Remind me Saturday and we can go up in the woods and find you some baby cedars for your bonsai if you'd like some.

Critter, I wonder if that peach leaved bellflower isn't my mystery campanula I have growing in my bed up in the yard? It's been there for years, never bloomed. I was going to move it this year and now for the first time it has flower buds on it.

Anyway, I have plenty of the clustered bellflower for anyone who wants some.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ooh, Hart, that's a great idea... it wasn't exactly a swap question, so I just posted over in the Q&A thread to see if you and Miata were open to the idea of having a little bonsai how-to clinic after lunch.... :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! I have just looked through this WHOLE Post to see if I might have forgotten anyone. Please...please if you asked for something and I do not have you on this list, let me know.

Gita - I'll double check but the only things I was hoping for were one of your Daturas and some Lilly of the Valley. I think the others might have been for someone else. I just don't want someone to be w/o their's. Everything I have in my front yard is pinks/purples/blues/whites. The datura would go on my deck in a big pot beside my brug.
I had to start the moonflower seeds again...lets hope something comes up...will be sure to bring you one. :)

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Chantell, I had to plant moonflowers twice last year too. Try nicking or sanding the seed coat. That seemed to do better than just soaking them.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh hart - you're going to laugh...the first batch I didnt' know any better and just planted...the 2nd batch - I nicked/soaked then put into the wet coffee filter in a ziplock bag and set on my front porch (more sun better, right? NOT!)...I believe I cooked those (fried moonflowers, anyone?)...so this last batch...I nicked...I soaked...then promptly put into soil in started pots...IF they dont' sprout this time...I'm done!! :)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gitagal: Re camelia -- I think I'd kill a cutting anyway. So if I can just sneak up there to Baltimore and try airlayering one of these days, I'll be really happy.

You asked for Variegated loosestrife -- I had forgotten that my 'Alexander' was supposed to be variegated. I am sure I bought it because it was variegated -- this was maybe 5 years ago, and I put it in a place where it didn't thrive, and I forgot about it (though it was carefully labeled). Last year I moved it, and it is very happy where it is. I love variegated stuff, and I'm sure that's why I bought it. But I didn't remember that when I moved it -- and it has reverted! It is no longer variegated! Do you still want any?

Mine looks sort of like this: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/47672/, but not so floriferous. I don't know if it is less floriferous because (1) we just moved it late last year, (2) it is still early in its season, or (3) it is just a rotten version of the plant. The foliage is nice enough, though.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I've got you down for the Coreopsis and the Nasturtium.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Larienda, I just made that last year believe it or not. I think it took me about and 1-2 hours to prune it. Almost any plant that is small leaved or small needled pine, or juniper etc can be a bonsai. Just look for something that already has a good structure. The azalea I have for Sally really has potential (don't worry Sally, I didn't chop it up). I've started a cutting from my amethyst falls wisteria I'm considering training, but it will probably take 7 years or more to bloom.

Chantell,

It's OK! I have enough to share of all the ones I listed. In some Post--way up there-you wanted the others as well. It is OK!
I have also had trouble betting Moonflowers to germinate! it took forever! And it was never really any good. By the time it grew to the top of my patio roof, it only had 2 blooms and the season was over. Some things are just better bought as already growing plants in a small pot. Amen!

Happy--
If you ever want to come this way, I would love to have you. I have directions to my house in My Documents. let me know when you will be coming. Maybe I could even start the air-layering for you? It is not that I have not read about how to do all that... just never done it.
The other Looswstrife will be OK. It IS a perennial??? and I DID read that it likes a semi-shady place? I have a bed facing East (sun until 2-3PM) that needs something tall in the background. This may be perfect. How fast does it spread --or how does it multiply????

Miatablu--Thank you. What would you like in exchange?

OK! NOW I will be going to make my Pickles while I watch Dr. Phil and Oprah. I always try to DO something productive if I just want to watch some TV. I could never just sit there with hands folded......

I think I covered all the responses. Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita (or anyone else), do you want some of my purple leafed lysimachia also? It's a perennial, does fine in part shade, but it spreads outward in a manner that's similar to monarda (bee balm)... not quite as aggressive as some mints, but still... I think it's very similar to this entry in PF, http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/21446/

Sterling, VA(Zone 6b)

happy_macomb: If you have some extra variegated solomon's seal I would like some. If not do not worry.

Gita: I will check the plants that you listed and bring some along. I know the slugs got my Rudbeckia Hirta 'Autumn Colors'.

- Brent

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter--Thanks, but no thanks. Somehow the purple leaves and the yellow flowers just don't inspire me. Sorry!

Gita

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Brent. It has been eons since I had some of the annual Hirtas. They are so pretty, with all their different colors.

Is there anything on my list you would like???? See my "haves" list.
How about some of the yellow, double Daturas? I have enough to share some with you.

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I love purple foliage on plants! The yellow flowers have a pretty short season, so this plant is really mostly about the foliage. Purple/burgundy (leaves and flowers) is pretty much a theme in the little side bed where the lysimachia is... I've got it growing along the back edge by the A/C, and it grows where not much else will, but it's a pain to keep in check... I'm not sure I'd plant it again on purpose, but I haven't quite gotten it to the point of dosing it with Round-Up either. :-)

Crozet, VA

I am wondering if anyone would like to have any Castor Bean seeds. If so, let me know. I recently found a bunch that I saved from last year. They bloom red.

Ruby

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

critter- have you seen Jewel of Opar? I will be bringing some. They have a chartreusey green leaf that I think would be super next to purple foliage. and tiny orange flowers that become neat sprays of seed. I might try your loosestrife, just a small one is fine.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think I saved some seeds from 'Jewel of Opar' last year, but somehow I didn't quite manage to get any started... maybe there will be volunteers; I'll have to try to look out for them. I'll be happy to bring you a clump of the purple lysimachia (I've learned not to call it purple loosestrife since there's a madly invasive plant by that name and people get whiggy)... making a note on my list... :-)

I'm going to stick castor bean seeds all around the gardens this year, trying them as a vole deterrant... I guess I'll just prune back the plants in most places and see how that goes (I don't want a hundred 8 ft. tall plants out there!)... with the construction starting nearby, I think the voles might be worse than usual this summer. For anyone who hasn't tried them, they're a neat plant -- very tropical looking, and I'm amazed that any annual can get that big!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Brent -- I'll need to see how much of the variegated solomon's seal I can spare, but should be able to get everyone who has asked so far at least one plant.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ruby, I am definitely interested in your Castor beans. I've been wanting to try them for years.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I just got in from moving some greek oregano, and I've split off about half a dozen nice little divisions and put them in 4 inch pots. They should probably be grown on in the pots for a few weeks so they can adjust and grow some more roots, but they'll make nice clumps in no time, especially if you harvest/pinch them regularly so they keep branching. I think some of it is 'Greek Mountain Oregano' and the rest is from un-named Greek Oregano plants, but all of them have wonderful, strong, spicy oregano flavor.

:-)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Just wanted to pop in and wish you all a fun and fruitful day on Saturday. I'm so sorry that I won't be able to come and play with you all!

Smooch Smooch

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Wrightie: Is there anything that interests you from everyone's "haves" lists? I'd be delighted to bring you a goodie bag of plants (I might even if you don't say so, so you'd be safer to let us know your interests!).

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Hmmm... I'll have to try to sit and look through them tonight when I get home. =0

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Surely you need a great tasting Greek Oregano... :-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

me too- I had one with tiny leaves and purple flowers, erect stems, but not too winter hardy. The one I have now isn't the same.
I have two good holly about eight inches tall and two smaller- critte did you want them, and this small OK?
