Haves, wants for spring swap

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Is anybody interested in Purple Obedient Plant or that 3 ft. "Not-Chocolate-Daisy" (enthusiastic yellow bloomer) that I posted a photo of above? I have way too many seedlings growing around both of those plants, and I'll need to dig them up soon.... I'm tight on time, so I won't be offering to pack and send them to anyone for postage on the plant trading forum; any that don't find homes will be composted. I'll pot up a couple for the swap just in case somebody wants one, but I won't bring more than one or two unless somebody speaks up for them.

Thanks!

It sounds like I'll find homes for as many little herbs (mostly mints or thymes from the look of things out there) as I can divide & pot up, so I'll see what I can do there. I will bring a big bag of 'Chocolate Peppermint' and 'Kentucky Colonel' Spearmint (my 2 favorite mints), since they are overrunning their bounds here.

I have a friend in the area who I think will take my leftover non-cherry tomato plants, so other than the one I'm up-potting for Gita, I probably won't bring any regular tomato plants unless somebody really needs them... I think they're going to be pretty pot-bound by the 9th. I'll bring the cherry tomato seedlings though -- I started them a couple of weeks later, and they're pretty tough. There should be half a dozen varieties to choose from. :-)

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

critter...purple obedient plant sounds good as well as the not-chocolate daisy plant...my youngest daughter loves all flowers & has been nuts about any and all daisy looking types!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy,

I will be happy to see you here any time if you want to mess around and air-layer a piece of my Camellia. It will be nice to meet you!
Mike wrote and asked me to take cuttings. This year, the new growth is a bit late in coming. it is just now sprouting. Be at least a month before I can take any cuttings. I took a picture of them and sent it to him. He will wait another month.

Sally,

You DID see that I have pregnant Onion in my "haves" list? Four of them growing in 6" pots. One will surely be yours.

Ruby,

What color is the Coleus you are bringing? I love Coleus. Anyone have the big, Sun Coleus? The cuttings root so easily...

***I need to know if anyone is really interested in any of the Rudbeckia I dug up and potted!!! I have been giving it away to people at work. If no one wants any for the Swap, I will give it all away. Maybe it is just too common. I would like to save one tray-full of it just in case....

OK! That's it for now!

Gita.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Larlienda, I'll be happy to pot both of those up for you.

Brent, I'd love some Nepeta 'Select Blue'... I put a different variety of catmint back among my irises last summer, and it looks like that's a good location for it.

Hart, you mentioned something about irises I think -- a pale purple or lavender one? I took a look at the purple irises I got from Nancy (nminmd) last year, and I do have a clump of rhizomes I could spare if you want to swap. It'll be a little early to dig them, but hopefully they'll do fine.

Here's a photo of Nancy's purple iris:

gita, i'd like some of the rudbeckia please :-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

happy - thank you re the Sweet Woodruff!!!
I've been editing my haves and wants as well....

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Critter, you're welcome to some of the light purple irises. I have a huge clump. And they're tough as nails. I know it won't hurt these to be dug now.

Gita, I saw pretty large pots (quart maybe?) of Sun coleus at Lowes last week or the week before for $2 something. If you don't find any, I'll be glad to pick up up a pot next week. If I haven't managed to kill it over the winter, I have a Kong coleus I'm hoping I'll be able to get cuttings from. I'll update my list and add it when I get a chance to see if that's going to be possible.

Brent has Nepeta? Ooo, could I have some? BTW, if any of you have cats, I have nice sized catnip plants.

If I ever get this chicken fence finished, I'll try to get my list updated and do a better job of seeing who has what. This fence is becoming the bane of my life. sigh

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

Haven't had much time to go shopping. Trying so hard to get all my plants planted and Brugs situated and beds planted.

Is your "Non-Chocolate" daisy a perennial or a biennial? If you think it would thrive in that corner bed by the maple tree (full of roots and very dry), I would like some. Always looking for hard-as-nails plants for that bed and that are perennial.
OK! I guess I will have to be happy with some cherry Tomatoes. I already have 2 planted and also a pot-full of the yellow pear ones.
Sure you don't want to choose an unusual, regular Tomato for me? I think it will be OK in a 6" pot--even if it gets rootbound. Pretty please!!!!.......:o)

OK! Can't sit on the "C" much longer. Work beckons......

Gita

Larienda--I will bring you some Rudbeckias. How many MP's would you like? There are 4-5 plants in each.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

I took some cuttings from some plants last night and put them in water. Do you think they will root by the plant swap date. Should I bring them if they haven't yet? If they do, what would be the preferred way to bring them. Should I pot them before coming or leave that up to whoever wants them and just bring them in water?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita - MP? I'm having a brain dead moment...what is that?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I thought I was clear... other than the tomato plant that I'm up-potting for you, I'll be bringing only cherry tomatoes... you will get the tomato seedling of your choice!

Since I don't know the identity of the not-chocolate-daisy, all I can say with certainty is that it isn't an annual, because it came back vigorously this spring. I have no idea how well it will compete with your maple roots, but there's no harm in trying. I don't think it's any tougher than, say, Rudbeckia -- but that's pretty tough! For anyone with bunnies or groundhogs in their yard, they have been munching my echinacea but haven't taken even a nibble of the not-chocolate-daisy plants.

Bobbie, I think I'll be bringing some cuttings the same way, in water, with or without roots. If I tried to pot up everything, I think somebody would end up having to ride on the roof, LOL.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Larlienda, do you already have shasta daisies? I got some from Gita, and I ended up with a few little ones when I divided the big clump that she gave me... they're potted up so they can develop more roots before planting out, so they'd be easy enough to bring along if you want them for your daughter. (If you've already got shasta daisies, I'll bring these up to my mom.)

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

critter, i have some wild little daisies...they grow tall & have a pinkish tinge to them and are more fringy/fluffy than regular daisies....i don't recall seeing them before moving here...right now i'm trying to figure out placement for a deep fire engine red sink i picked up at the restore (habitat for humanity's store) for $5.00....it's a gorgeous red & i'm trying to work it with some butterfly bush & delphiniums i picked up on the sunny side of two large lilacs.....i've got to make it look good or my husband is going to turn fire engine red!!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That sink sounds like fun, but you're right... could be tricky to site it properly!

I'll bring you a couple of Gita's shasta daisies in a pot.

Hart!! I'm so excited about this... just got a Dmail from somebody wanting an Iris that I didn't care for once it bloomed (it's not pink, it's peach, and I just don't like peach)... I'm sending it to her in return for a nice rooted start of Lonicera sempervirens (the red honeysuckle) for you! I should have it in time to bring it down for the swap. Woohooooo!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Critter! Bless your heart! Thank you so much. My goodness.

I'm just trying to picture the bathroom that sink came out of. LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... I didn't think about the kind of bathroom that would have fire engine red fixtures! Too bad you didn't get the toilet also... filled with petunias... now, there's a conversation piece!

Hart, here's the link to her trade thread with a photo of the honeysuckle: http://davesgarden.com/trading/view/list.php?list=have&member=jackieshar

:-)

Crozet, VA

Wow, this is really getting exciting!!! Lots of swappin' goin' on. I just wanted to add that I feel the same as Happy about the plants that I am bringing. They are just things that I have an abundance of and want to share to good homes.

When I mentioned earlier that I would like to have lilac, my hubby went to his parents place and brought back two for me. Such a great guy.

Anyways, this is so fun!!!

Ruby

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Congrats on your new lilacs! Maybe DH will dig the planting holes for you too? :-)

I potted up some wintersown seedlings yesterday, and I've got a 6-pack of Brunnera microphylla for Sally... they're just small seedlings, but they look sturdy.

I've also got an extra 6-pack of Penstemmon digitalis seedlings, which I guess I'd better add to my list above. I got the seeds from Equilibrium, so they should look like her photo (next year), http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/853/index.html.

It looks like I'll have to get my wintersown columbines transplanted soon also, so I may have an extra 6-pack or two of those to offer. I sowed many different types this year, so I'll make sure I label as I go.

The 6-packs I'm using are deep cell packs, so seedlings should be quite sturdy by the time they've filled those with roots... up to you whether you plant out then or up-pot to a quart or trade gallon pot first.

I also pruned my purple plectranthus yesterday, got a bunch of cuttings from it and also got a few more cuttings from the silver one. It sounds like enough people are already bringing spider plants that maybe I shouldn't molest mine (green & variegated) for cuttings. I'll fill another rooting jar or two with various colors of wandering jew, swedish ivy, etc. Hopefully all will have some roots by the swap; they're generally pretty quick.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

Could you save me a couple Columbines? I used to have many --years ago. Now I only have a blue one I bought last year.

I have some OLD seeds from my neighbor's maroon and yellow and others too. I wonder if any of them would sprout????? I think I might try! What do I have to lose?

Thanks, Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I started some seeds that were several years old, but I've been keeping my columbine seeds (and poppy seeds and a couple others) in the fridge. I mean, what else is that butter keeper door for?

Gita, I'll put Columbines on your list and see what I can come up with. I owe you! You should see how well those LOTV are doing... and your daisies, cactus, etc. look good also!

I would love a cutting of your plectranthus mona lavender, Miatablu.

I don't have any redbud saplings - they're notoriously impossible to transplant unless extremely tiny too. But there are oodles of seeds on my redbuds if you'd like some.

I know Joyce has some redbud babies in her yard. I'll see if we can find some little bitty ones to dig up.

I have lots of box elder saplings of you'd like some. They're a maple.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Miatablu: I'd love some Blue-eyed grass Lucerne and also any extra helleborus once every one else has spoken up. I've been looking for those! And the Mona Lavender is gorgeous if you have an extra small cutting. I can bring you some Sweet Kate, but I probably only have enough for you -- maybe a small cutting more if anyone else wants some -- speak up.

I also have some variegated solomon's seal, which I love -- would you like that?

I have a bunch of shade plants (see my list above). I might have a Japanese red maple seedling -- I'll check around. You won't like Begonia Grandis -- it is pink! But Wood Poppy is lovely -- do you have that? I'll try to remember to check your shade list later to see what you already have.

I might have extra unnamed ferns -- probably hay scented -- any interest?

Bobbie, I'm glad you had better luck with the small leafed purple basil cuttings... you so generously let me take half a dozen cuttings from your new plant, and they started getting roots, and then they suddenly folded up and died! I was hoping to bring them to the swap on your behalf... so much for that notion... :-( I haven't started hardening them off, but you're welcome to some basils this afternoon if you'd like... I've got a purple one that would look nice with your small-leafed one.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Critter, I just took cuttings on Monday, so mine might meet the same fate. I'll bring them with me to the swap but I won't accept any trade for them just in case. I'll do my best to get one started for you. Not to pre-trade or anything, but all my basil Siam Queens withered away. Any xtra? If not, I'll just start some new seeds. I didn't start them last year until I got my deck container garden going about this time last year and they did fine.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think I started half a dozen Thai basils... and for you, I will give one up! Good thing we didn't have Thai curry last night after all... we might be able to take tip cuttings from the others as well... Remind me this afternoon. I think your basil cuttings will be fine, just pot them up right away when they start getting roots.... I left mine for a few extra days when I went to TX, came back, changed their water, they looked fine.. but the next morning -- gone!

I'm starting to waffle a little about going to Surreybrook with you this afternoon because I'm trying to catch up now that my head is behaving (darn migraines; I got used to *not* having them pretty quickly, so I've been moaning about them this past week)... but then again, I may be ready for a break about then! I'm just feeling guilty about the tomatoes languishing on the deck, and I need to make sure I at least get the veggie bed tilled up today (yanked the weed jungle out of there yesterday), maybe get some holes half-dug so I can get them in tomorrow.

Besides, we have to go so we can find some more goodies from which to take cuttings for the swap! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I may have spoken too soon about not having corydalis... now I'm seeing a bunch of little seedlings coming up... was it Hart who wanted some? I'll see if I can pot up a couple. They're from a plant I got from Levilyla.

Also, when pulling weeds yesterday I uncovered a zillion little Rose Campion seedlings... anyone interested?

Next year they'll bloom like this...

Thumbnail by critterologist
Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

miatablu- I can offer ostrich and sensitive ferns, small dogwoods,--hoping that azalea comes to the party
I will check my mom's yard for redbud babies- they've moved OK for me.
gita- check for best germination technique on the comlumbine before you start
critter- if some corydalis can find a pot--?? i'd be interested

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Critter, it was me who wanted corydalis. That's great! I'd love some of the rose campion too if you have plenty. I have a couple of plants from last year's seedlings but if I can get a couple of this year's seedlings I can get them in a cycle where they bloom every year.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Critter - now those I would love some of if you have enough to share

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, it wouldn't be a party without an azalea :) I'll see if I can get it potted for you. Anyone have any advice on digging it up, do's or don'ts?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, Sally, I'll add that to my list for you... they are very tiny, but I guess they'll grow! You did want the Brunnera macrophylla (Siberian Bugloss), right? It's just the regular green kind, nothing fancy, but I think deer are not partial to it (unlike hostas), so I started some to bring to my mom this fall.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I have what I think??? are Purple Basil. I was planing on bringing a few to trade and ID. BTW sorry I probably will not have willows to bring. Maybe rooted starters but not more than that.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I should've pruned my crooked willow harder this spring to get a few more cuttings... I've had several requests. I did stick half a dozen, and they look like they're doing well, but I'm keeping them all until Mom has a chance to pick her favorite next spring. My tree is an offspring from hers, which is now declining quickly, so I'm doing my best to grow a replacement for her.

BTW, Bobbie, your purple basil is small leafed, but it's not a dwarf. Mine grew to at least 30" last year, maybe more like 3 ft. tall by the end of summer... wonderful plant!

Here's a photo...

Thumbnail by critterologist
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

... and a closer look at the foliage. Now you'll have everybody crossing their fingers that your cuttings do well! ;-)

Thumbnail by critterologist
Shenandoah Valley, VA

If nobody is going to ask for that helleborus foetidus, I sure would like to have one.

I forgot who wanted the jewelweed, but I walked down that way today and there's oodles of it if anyone else wants any.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Bobbie and I had a fun ride out to Surreybrooke -- in the Miata, with the top down! Wheeeeeeeeee! I got a purple *trailing* Torenia and am going to try to root some cuttings. I started regular Torenia again from seed this year, but I think all my extras will go up to Pittsburgh for Mom. :-) However, I did just take tip cuttings from my double Impatiens ('Rose Parade'), so I might have some of those to offer.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi, All-

Hey I'm finally sitting down and resting.....Been in the Garden since 11AM! Took a pain pill and just kept rolling. Now I am tired. It must have worn off.

I went sceounging for something to dig up in my neighbor's yard. Relax! No one lives there now. The house is empty and the yard/Garden is a mess. My neighbor moved into an assisted living facility last summer. Anyway----she has a lot of Nandinas (Heavenly Bamboo) growing everywhere. I thought i would dig some up and pot them in 1 gal. pots. All the dug up ones had some roots attached. Being a bamboo, they won't even blink for the disturbance. So---I will have 6 one gallon pots of Nandina. Will go and add it to my "Haves" list. I have also started about 4 Aloe clump divisions. Some of them have no roots yet, but will. I know they will root! Have done it many times. Some of them will have roots--as I plan to pull up all the other ones (3) that are still in the big pot. Will add those also to my list.

Jill----the picture of your "Rose Campions" is NOT really a Rose Campion. It is called that regionally, but the RC has different bloom shapes and also reddish stems. I had quite a discussion going last year after I returned from my trip to AK. My sister had some RC's in her yard. I took pictures and posted them and there followed quite a discussion of the differences between the two. I went looking back to all my Posts to find them and post a Hyperlink here, but that is just too tedious a project for my short attention span brain.

What you have is "Lychnis Coronaria". AKA as "Catchfly" or as I have always known it--"Corn Cockle".

This is a picture of the Rose Campion in my sister's garden.

Hart: It was me who wanted the jewelweed. I wouldn't recognize it, so I hope you won't mind showing it to me so I can snitch a little.

Critter -- what does Thai basil taste like? I assume it is the basil that is used in Thai and Vietnamese soups, but I've never tasted it by itself. Is it very different from regular basil?

Everyone else: I am going to scour my yard for more to bring -- can't wait!
