I thought it might be fun to discuss things from our past.Examples-SPRING CLEANING,home remedies and such.
I remember every spring we drug everything it seemed outside;rugs, bedding,to air them out.Really don't know why we did this it was a annual thing.
I remember my summer job-working in tobacco. No we did not have bulk barns, transplanters. It was all done by hand and we had fun doing it.I loved to crop and hang.I suckered, lugged, pulled plants, killed snakes, can't forget the tobacco worms.Anyone remember a grading stick?I never could loop.Made a mess of it.We also used mules to break up the fields. No I am not 150 years old.I am 48.I had a RC Cola and a moonpie for lunch.Used the money I earned to buy school clothes.
Did anyone else wear hand me down clothes?
Just add things and this could be a fun thread..........I miss our white mule.I named himThunder and rode him all the time.

things from our past
HD, you must be on a nostaglia kick - good for you. I too miss the "good old days."
We are the same age but I have to admit, your summer job was a lot more interesting than mine. I worked for the first time as Christmas help in a very busy department store. They stuck me behind a counter wrapping christmas presents . Ugh! To this day I cannot stand to wrap gifts of any kind. Thank God for gift bags.
When I was growing up we spent every minute outside. No tv watching for us. We rode bikes around the neighborhood, put on "plays" we wrote ourselves, hung out at the park, etc. We used our imaginations to have fun. When the street lights went on, we knew it was time to go home. I have two older sisters and their clothes became my clothes. Every Easter my oldest sister would get a new hat and coat but my middle sister would get her last year's clothes and I would get the middle sisters' - which by then had been worn by both of them. When I started to earn my own money and buy clothes, it was the happiest time of my life.

I'm a few years older then you guys.I For some reason I'm sure I wore hand me downs but I don't remember. There were 6 kids and I had two older sisters. I remember baking cookies with my older brother and he would go in the back yard and shovel a maze in the snow and we'd all get together and play tag. In the summer we would drag home refridgerator boxes and make houses out of them. Sometimes we even took the bottom off and made them into tanks and we'd roll around and over each other. That was hard on the knees though.
We'd cover the swingset with old blankets and sleep out over night. boy it was cool and damp!
We rode our bikes all over also. We'd ride out to our cousins that lived on a farm. Play in the haymow and the old house they stored grain in. Snitch strawberries. Ride to the park and go swimming all the time.
First job was taking over my brothers newspaper route. That was rough in the winter. Got some frostbite one time on the toes.
But I would still rather grow up then then now!
Yeah, I wore my brother's hand me downs on occasion. Good thing he was the older of us two, cause he would have looked pretty funny in one of my dresses. :)-
I had ponies and horses and I'd be out on a horse from early in the morning till dusk at night. As long as the horse didn't come home with out me mom knew we were ok. :)

I didn't wear hand-me-downs, as I was the youngest and the only girl in the family. My mother was a wonderful seamstress, so I always had nicely tailored clothes. Unfortunately for her, I was a tomboy who wanted to wear dungerees and flannel shirts in the winter, shorts and sun tops in the summer. She'd chase me down, scrub me up and put a dress on me for special occasions only.
We lived on a 38 acre farm in Northern Indiana. My mother washed clothes in an old wringer washer, and for the first couple years we lived there, we had an outhouse. I had a pet goat who like to ride to town in the front seat of the car, and there were always dogs and cats for playmates. Tomcats do not like to wear dresses, of course, neither did I. Each fall, my father butchered pigs for the freezer. I was not allowed to watch the process, and it was probably best, as some of the pigs were my summertime friends.
I'm sure I was a bit spoiled. My mother always said, 'You can't spank a curly headed baby', and she didn't. I spent my summers robbing cucumbers and tomatoes from the garden, running barefoot through the sprinkler and riding my bicycle down to the neighbor girl's house. I didn't hold a job until I was married. It was quite a shock!
i did not wear hand-me-downs,we lived near the coast,i spent alot of time with my grandparents it was a fun time for my sister and i, just to walk along the beach gather seashells, not to be afraid to speak to a perfect stranger climb the mountain to see the goats grazing, sneak down to the local creek and gather a bucket of blackberrys and get in trouble from my grandmother with her famous line and who's going to cook all of those???
i especially loved going to the local store across the highway getting ice coca cola in the bottle and eskimo pies
my aunt would tell us stories about the bootleggers who would pull up on the beaches.
people were friendly, would lend a hand if you needed it, it was a great time to be part of i sure miss the good old days.

When my grandon, Richard Christopher was born we went to NJ to see him. Since his initials were RC I took an RC and a moon pie. His mom and grandmother didn't know what they were. Had to expain to them.
As the youngest of 3 girls I got stuck with the hand-me-downs....now they're hand-me-ups....from my kids and husband. LOL
We had milk etc. delivered to the house. Milk in glass bottles with the cream on top...to this day I still shake the milk before pouring it. Also had a hukster that brought fruits and veggies...somewhere are pictures of my sisters and me getting weighed in the scale on the back of his truck. :-)))
Remember summertime, getting the whole neighborhood together at dusk, didn't matter if they were your best friends or not, and playing "Red Rover" and "Mother May I" until we couldn't see each other any more, and freeze tag. We put on plays we wrote too, one had a Mexican hat dance. My daughter, who is now 18, says they did the same, kids you couldn't stand, it didn't matter when the games were on! They played a game where they had to dress in black and run across the yards and over the fences, but I'm too old (45) to know that one.
