voles and coffee grounds

Last year I began to have vole damage and it looks worse this year. I get a magazine through my electric membership co-op and there is often gardening information in it. One article discussed garden problems and coffee grounds were mentioned as a deterrent to moles and voles. Has anyone tried this?
I would also like to know what the benefits are when using coffee grounds as fertilizer. Our local Starbucks actually gives away packages of coffee grounds.

Woodspirit, I've read alot about coffee grounds on several different threads. Unfortunately I don't know how to do a hyperlink. But I think they were in the Organic forum. One thing I do know about coffee grounds is that earthworms love it. And anything that attracts earthworms is worth the trouble, because their castings (poop) is excellent fertilizer! Also if you have hostas, you can put the grounds around the plants and repel snails. I don't know if it's the texture of the grounds or the caffeine they don't like.

I have trouble doing links also. finally someone e-mailed me instructions and I printed them out. I get it right sometimes, lol.
Now if I could just learn how to choose bold or italics fonts. Thanks for the info about the snails as I do have some problems with them too. My climate is quite wet.
My husband came inside since I posted this question and said the voles had devastated my pinks. I'm going to be out there with rat poison over the weekend. I'll shove it far enough back into the holes to be sure birds and squirrels don't get it.

Be careful with the rat poison. Sometimes pets get into that stuff or they eat the animal and get poisoned that way. I have moles or voles too, but I also have cats who I treasure as much as my kids. There are products on the market that are supposed to be very effective at repelling those critters. Some have castor oil in them or garlic or a combination of things.

woodspirit - you can find how to do that in the FAQ's

some message boards use < and some use [
I think here use these < & > for bold, italics, and underline
where you use [ & ] for quotes

as for URL's
i think as long as you have the entire URL, including the http
it will hyperlink for you.

HTH -- and I too hope grounds keep voles away... this is the first year i've noticed they have ventured into my flower beds.

Terese

Well, I put poison out this afternoon. I used a long-handled iced tea spoon and placed the poison pellets deeply into the hole. This should stop birds and squirrels from getting them. I have some concern about the chipmunks but haven't seen them around for the last year or two.
I had to hike down my terraces and when I tried to come back, I did not realize how weakened I was by my cold which has gone to my chest. I thought I wasn't going to get back. When I did, I coughed for about 10 minutes, having trouble inhaling enough to cough hard. Thought I'd never get my breath back.
But after supper, I couldn't resist lurking about outside a bit. We had a terrible rainstorm last night and got about 3-1/4 inches rain. I discovered a large white bucket I left outside with a partial bag of 5-10-10 in it, completely full of water! So I ended up distributing the whole wet mess between my azaleas.
Back to the house, more coughing.
I will think twice tomorrow about hiking back down the terraces to fertilize more daffodils.

Sorry you're sick woodspirit. I was thinking of you last night when during the weather report when they were talking about all the storms. There's somebody named BamaBelle in Ala who's DH is very sick. I've been watching that thread too. I don't know where in Ala though so I don't know if she was in the line of the storms or not. My DB lives in Stone Mountain Ga and I think he was hit by storms last night. Everytime I hear of storms or grass fires or such I think about all the DGer's that might be in danger.

We just had a lot of rain. We don't get tornadoes in the mountains.

Glad you're safe.

Thanks. Just called the pharmacist to see if he had any cold medications that actually work. Most that you buy in the stores are greatly weakened but he said he had the real stuff behind the counter. I need fertilizer too, so I'm off. Luckily these 2 stores are here in my community and I don't have to drive 20 miles into town.
