What?! A snow storm!

Okay this weather is really creeping me out. Just when it felt like spring was on its way we now have a snow storm warning in effect starting tonight! Ugh! I am really just fed up with this! How is your weather these days?

We're expecting 2 inches of rain where I am. All we had this entire season was an ice storm and a light snow that left us with 2 inches. It's been a pretty pathetic and depressing winter.

It's definitely wierd. The birds are singing like crazy, we've had robins here all winter and the chipmunks came out their burrows yesterday and today. Tomorrow they'll be snug back in their burrows as we are due for snow, icy rain and rain....possibly in that order. My folks will be getting 6-10 inches in southern Maine....
I won't miss winter when spring finally does come!

Same here Tamberlin - though it has been a short winter - we had extremely mild weather until mid-January..

Hey, jjpm74! I'm just north of you in Shelton. We got almost 6 inches of snow last week! Funny the difference a few miles makes.

BTW, I'm hearing we may get 3 to 4 inches of rain in just a few hours tomorrow mid-day, never mind the rain that's supposed to come tonight. Hoping my basement doesn't flood!

I hope your basement doesn't flood either Dee....wow that sure is a lot of rain in a short period of time.

Wish me luck folks the snow is about to begin and I have to drive the kiddos to the sitter tomorrow. I am a bit nervous about how the driving conditions will be.

DiggerDee--Indeed it's a significant difference. You guys had a snow storm when we had that ice storm. I drove literally 5 miles inland from where I live and saw a significant amount of snow just as I got to the route 8 interchange in Trumbull. It never ceases to amaze me how much of a difference a few miles can make when it comes to snow/rain.

jjpm74, I grew up in Bpt and lived in Stratford for awhile also, and when I moved to Shelton, I thought I moved to the Yukon, lol! Of course, it was the winter of 95-96, that year we had 19(!!) snowstorms, so it would have been a lot of snow anywhere, but I couldn't believe the difference. I was never nervous about driving in snow till I moved here, and now I'm a snow wimp.

I'm sure you've heard the line about weather north of the Merritt....

Forgot to say thanks Dawn! I have a good waterproofing system in the basement, but no back-up system yet. As long as we don't lose power I'll be okay. I never worried about it until we started renovating the basement. I've got an appointment to see about power back-up... in two weeks, lol! Lots and lots and LOTS of rain this morning. I hear we're actually supposed to see the sun this afternoon - I'll believe it when I see it - literally, lol!

Not sure how much snow we got here. It started snowing somewhere around 4am and it's still snowing/sleet/freezing rain. I took a few pics. of "before" the storm, "during" and tomorrow morning I will take an "after" picture. We had 40 degree weather here yesterday...I was sooooo hopeful! Maybe it won't last long? yeah right!!

Wow! Pixie - that's a lot of snow. We received very heavy rain most of the day. At 4 pm I had to go outside and drain the winter-sowed seed trays. They contained almost 2 inches of water. The seeds are in pots in the trays . . . I am hopeful that all our snow will be gone in 2 to 3 weeks.

Well it wasn't as bad as they said it would be....never lost power.

We lucked out Friday too. Couldn't find numbers for my town, but the town next door got 3.61 inches of rain. Lots of closed roads, etc., but no major damage/accidents that I heard of. From a purely selfish point of view, we never lost power and so my basement is dry - yay!

Kind of glad for the rain. After our almost snowless winter, I was getting worried about our rainfall levels. Every little bit helps.

Nice pics, pixie. Once the danger and hassle of the snow is over (i.e. having to drive in it!) I love snow. Especially the day after when it's almost always gloriously sunny with a sparkling blue sky. I actually don't mind shoveling my 75-ft driveway on a day like that!

Dee, we got about 8" of snow....but it was 46 here yesterday. And your right....don't mind shoveling snow in 46 degree weather, but it was getting really heavy as the day got warmer. Now I have mud in my driveway!

Yesterday was grand. Spent four hours cutting back the daylilies to stubs and cleaning two gardens. I had high hopes for today but it's still at 34 per the top of my screen and it looks a bit windy.

This was taken Feb. 23rd.

8 inches! Wow! Yes, I can imagine that does get wet and heavy mighty fast on a 46-degree day!

Needless to say, we've got quite a bit of mud here too. Yesterday was *so* nice out, one of the first days with a hint of spring, so I had to take a tour of the garden. I squished over the whole yard, lol, and some places I couldn't even go. Started getting ideas for some bog gardens, though...

Pirl....thats gorgeous! Such bright, cheery, spring colors.......just what I needed!

Dee, had the bog garden idea last year when it rained more than it snowed! I did end up putting a small bed in semi shade that seems to be always wet. Stuck some plants that like wet feet, such as Black Gamecock and Japanese Primrose, hope they make it!

Japanese iris would do well if the spot also gets at least six hours of full sun.

It only gets 2-3 hrs. of sun in the morning, but i like your JP iris. Here's mine:

Eh, figures! Most of my wet areas are in shade! Oh well, I've got lots of things on the to-do-list before I start a bog garden anyway.

We got a ton of rain including (I think) 8 inches in the heaviest 2 hours. My basement stayed almost dry, which is huge. However, the surface water rose to almost come in my back door! Nothing like that has ever happened. I wonder if it was the combination of very heavy rain and frozen ground. Can't walk in my yard without damaging things. I still have a couple of ponds that I don't usually have.

When I was out working there was a crooked brick and when I lifted it and jabbed at the ground, with scissors, ice flew back in my face. The ground is only soft for 1/2" to an inch in full sun. Puddles within gardens because the ground cannot accept it.

Fri and Sat was just gorgegous after the storms of rain went thru, then we had flurries almost all day Sun and now it's not supposed to get out of the 20's Tues. Just when I thought spring was here!!!!!

Saturday was grand and I spent four hours working outside but right now it's 11 and I don't need to know what this horrible wind (35 MPH per radio) brings the temperature down to but it's cold. Even the walkers and joggers aren't out yet.

nothing here that even resembles spring :-(

Minus 9 with wind chill factor. Spring will be twice as good.

Yay this weekend the temps are suppose to be above zero!!!!!!!! Knock knock - who is there? Spring is just around the corner hehehehe.

Hurray! We got the good word, too. Temps near 50 - it will feel like "Sunny Florida".

I have 3 feet of snow on my garden. I am so jealous. I keep myself going with soil-sprouts. Growing greens all winter.

Hi Vic, Zone 4 We usually have 2 week of below zero in Feb. The lowest temps will be minus 30, which we had this week. I a pure act faith, I am planting onions, peas and cabbage this week end. I think I'' throw in a tomato and a pepper to nurse through the spring cold. Otherwise I'll start my sets in a few weeks. The trouble with this last snow is that the driveway is like a canyon now! No place to put anymore. Still we are better off than Oswego with 11 feet!

Wow - I'd like to see a photo of your driveway! You're right - there's always someone who had it even worse. When do you plant the Summer veggies outside, like tomatoes, peppers, etc.? End of May? Stay warm.

The wind has been worse this winter than I can ever remember. It's non-stop howling. I think we're seeing signs of cabin fever - especially in the mirror.

We rely on the end of May to plant veggies outside - they like the warmer start.

I'll take a recent photo and post it! I figure my 'last frost' date as May 31. Last year it was May 15 with one very light frost a week after that, still, I don't put the tomatoes and peppers out until first week in June. Until I get a green house! But there is still lots to plant in April and May. I used a 'hoop house for the peppers last year and had the best every pepers so I will use that again. The nights can get below 50 in the summmer so the peppers like the protection.

TD, Ever try wall-o-waters? I thought they were pretty good.

Hi Dave, I tried once but did not have good luck, there is an interesting post on this here so I am reconsidering it!

My brother grows great, huge tomatoes and he is always skeptical of every innovation I bring up. But he's still using wall-o-waters.
