Mark...I think some people guess at the size of the flowers!!! And maybe for them the flower does grow larger...a different clone. I am very skeptical about putting much faith in dimensions!!! Yes...it is like H. kenejiana, isn't it...AND H. dimorpha, too. But if I could have but one yellow flowered thing...it would be H. ischnopus....
March buds-n-blooms
What a beauty that H. vitiensis is. I had one of these on my order to David last year but it was one of three cuttings that came in not looking so good. I did manage to save one leaf of it, and it is turning out to be a nice size plant. I also scored another cutting from a very dear friend. I hope to see a bloom soon !! What a pretty color it is.
David I will be able to share a cutting with you soon. Next best thing to a plant.
Vitiensis really is a beauty. Love the color.
Regarding H. montana, I realized finally what it reminds me of- a pumpkin when you carve it up for a jack-o-lantern. It has that same faintly sweet and putrid at the same time kind of quality, with a little mango on the side.
Bea, I spoke too soon about H. pachyclada not dripping. When my subquintuplinervis (basically the same plant, more upright and a very slightly different leaf shape) bloomed before it made nectar but didn't drip. Pachyclada didn't at first but after being open for a few days it poured nectar all over itself and the table it's sitting on. At least it's clear, so hasn't stained the wood. Next time its getting newspaper.
Mark.......... that is funny, they are just like kids and keep us cleaning up after them all the time:) I will be sure to get out the paper when mine should grow up and bloom.
Is it just me or does Hoya ischnopus change it's fragrance as the plant matures? It has bloomed for me twice this winter. The first time I could smell something awful and went hunting for it in the family room. I was sure the kids left something in a corner and it went bad:) It turn out to be Hoya ischnopus and it got stronger and stronger each day. At one point I thought to myself I am going to take it out to the greenhouse but then I knew I wouldn't get to see it so it stayed. The second time it bloomed I saw the bud forming and thought oh boy here we go again it's pretty but that smell is going to come back. Well much to my surprise the fragrance was much better this time, it didn't overpower the whole room and it was much sweeter smelling. So what happened does it change it's frangrance or did I just fall in love with the bloom and get used to it.
Carol..... does the frangrance change as the plant matures???
Bea
Bea...I haven't noticed. I will see if I can find out.
Dr. Kitty...is it really as white as it looks? Mine always bloom pale yellow...almost creamy white. Don't you love the scent?
Ann, that is my favorite (so far :~) of any hoya I have smelled. That's the one I would pack around while in bloom. Nice photo! -joanne
It's also a favorite of mine 'cause a wonderful epiaddict gave it to me!!!
:-)
awwww MsKitty.... that one is so delicate looking. Very pretty
Bea
Nice flowers everyone!!
I have been moving my plants outside under a shade cloth I am trying this year. I discovered yesterday buds on fungii, bella, and heuschkeliana. Yippee!!
Beautiful flower MsKitty!
:) Kim
Gorgeous flowers everyone! Can't wait for my yellow hoyas to bloom too, but I don't think they're mature enough this year.
A few weeks ago, I had a few plants with flower buds. Then I gave most of my hoyas their "end of the dry winter" Neem Oil treatments. Turns out I should have done it earlier, before the buds showed up, because they all blasted. Pubicalyx, lacunosa tove and thomsonii all gone, but I'm sure more will come soon. A plus though, is that even though I treated archboldiana, its buds didn't blast. The difference I think was that I didn't move archie from its shelf, just put newspaper all around it before I sprayed. The others I took into the bathtub so I could give them a "really good" soaking. My five carnosas and compacta weren't treated and compacta has two umbels out of its first dozen opened and two of the carnosas will open later this week I think.
For such tough plants, they can be downright cranky!!
Christine
That's Gorgeous, Awanda!!!
Ann
Nice!! But can't imagine one of my hoyas so large it gets tangled!!
Gee, that's a lovely one Awanda.
Awanda...how is the fragrance? I have heard it is...pungent. Mine have bloomed so far up the tree I can't get there... How is yours?
Carol my sinuses are acting up, so I can't detect any smell, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't have one.
Blessings,
Awanda
Will get photos today...mine is blooming too, Awanda. I smell a not too unpleasant fragrance....sort of a musty H. carnosa. The flowers are Great.
Carol
Great pictures, carol! H. vitiensis and H. chlorantha are in the same section, Angustialatus, along with most of the yellow flowered relatives of H. ischnopus, like H. montana and H. kenejiana.
wonderful flowers everybody!!!!
Gorgeous, Lotta!!! It is one of my favorites too!!!
Just glorious everyone!!!!
Oh how darn pretty. Great eye candy...
Lotta that is beautiful!
Thank you!!
Thanks for the great pictures for the month. I have two hoya that have finally put out buds. They are supposed to be australis, but I'm not sure. I'll post pics as soon as they open. Right now they are the size of peas.
