I have not used the journal feature much, but I would like to start now. I was going to list all the roses I just ordered from countyside so that I could quickly pull them up and see and accompanying picture from the plantfiles and know which is which as I get to know them. However, it appears that the journal does not link to the plant files in the same way that the tradelist does? I really want to see the pictures the way the tradelist has them pictured, but if I list them in the tradelist to see the pictures and link, I will have people dmailing me for cuttings when I truly don't have any to trade just yet..
Does this make sense? Can journals show pictures with links to plantfiles or just the tradelists? If that's the way it is, Can you make it so that the journal can show pictures and link to the plantfiles just like the tradelist? This would make me more inclined to use the journal feature.
Thanks
Susan
Journal doesn't link to pics/plantfiles, tradelist does??
If you added the plant to your journal by going into Plant Files and clicking on add this plant to your journal, then there will be a link back to PF from your journal entry (although there's a little bug where occasionally the link doesn't get made, but most of the time it does). The pictures won't show up in your journal though, just a link to the PF entry which you have to click on. But if you put plants in your journal on your own (not adding them through Plant Files) then I don't think there's a way to make a link right now, other than going through PF and adding the plant again. I do think it would be nice if the journal could be like the tradelist where you could see the picture without having to click the link back to PF, that would be really cool!
thank you and yes it would be cool.........
is admin here?
Susan
Yes, we're here ;o)
I suspect that this will take some major programming efforts on Dave's part. I also have some concerns with using others' images appearing in *your* journal, as it's likely that a visitor might easily assume the images are your own. (Since tradelists are now integrated into PlantFiles, there's less likelihood of confusion with them. But journals have always been a really personal tool.)
I suppose we'll have to wait and see what Dave's thoughts are on the technical and copyright aspects of this suggestion, and I know he's got some high-priority items he's working on at the moment.
Thanks Terry... I didn't even think of the possibility of someone thinking it was their picture a thought... I guess I'm just so familiar with plantfiles that it didn't occue to me. I guess it could have a title "from the Plantfiles"?? Or something like that.. The tradelist shows pics from plantfiles and those aren't the particular plants for trade either.. I'm not trying to be difficult.. just pointing that out :)
I just ordered 16 roses total and I've done extensive research on them, but will nonetheless need a refresher when it comes time to plant. My intention was to load them into my journal and quickly be able to see a picture and click on the plantfile link to remind myself of what it is and where I plan to plant it. Without this feature, I really wouldn't care to use the journal for this and it wouldn't help me. If I load them into my tradelist, it will still meet my requirements, but then I will have to explain this to DG'ers wanting them for trade. Thanks for considering this.

But the plantfiles pics shown in tradelists now still have the copyright info across the pic, everyone knows it's not a pic from the owner of that tradelist. I too would love to have journals have the same features as tradelists. I do have photos of many/most of my plants but new ones I don't and it's easier for me to plan things in my gardens with a pic of the plant involved.

I have recently started using the journal and came across this obstacle of not being able to add the picture, which is very discouraging and may discourage my continuing use of the journal. Has there been any further discovery or decisions made on this issue?
No, I don't think anything's been done--as far as I know Dave's still busy with working on the marketplace. So for now you'll have to live with just having a link in your journal to take you back to the Plant Files entry, really you're just one click away from the pictures that way. And you can always upload your own picture to your journal--honestly I prefer that, for a tradelist I wouldn't care if it was someone else's picture, but since my journal is for my garden, I personally prefer to have my own pictures in there rather than automatically putting in one from Plant Files.
Sonoita, just to be sure, are you trying to add your own photos to your journal and having trouble with that?
No plantfiles.
I have people that d-mail me all the time asking for trades that are not available... I should just link to this thread instead..
