What's wrong and can I save the tree?

Central, AL(Zone 8a)

This Prunus serotina developed this oozing and loss of bark; maybe 6 months to a year before that my neighbor next door expanded his driveway and it cut some if the roots. I don't know if the problem is related to that or not. It is too high for it to have been browsed by deer. The tree foliage is healthy looking (Or was last summer when I took the photo) and still fruits. Is it insect damage, or stress, or what? And should I plan on cutting it down before it progresses and dies or can I save it?

It looks to me just like a scar from an injury, like maybe from a backhoe when they worked on the driveway?

Looks like the cambrium is growing back fairly well, and yes, thats a hit from a piece of equipment, and should heal over.

Thanks so much! I really like that tree and was afraid I would lose it. Would there be any benefit to putting sealing compound over the area to try to keep insects out? Or insecticidal spray?

- no, because it has

developed this oozing
which is its own built-in sealing compound . . . far more effective than anything you can buy

Resin

Thanks again. Will let Mother Nature handle it.
