Favorites for My Information

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

It would be neat if I could select a plant in plant files and click an [I have this plant] button or a [wishlist] button and have a list on the My Information that can contain the list of plants I have, and a wish list of those I want. It would be neat to be able to integrate this in the journals somehow, but as that is so free-form, not sure if this is possible.

I would like to be able to select my favorite mail-order gardens from Garden Watchdog and also the local ones from Go Gardening and be able to put the lists on my profile page so that if there are people near me, I can see where they like to shop (or they can see where I like to shop), or if there is someone in say, the hosta forum, I can check their profile and see what sites they like to order from.

I looked a few pages back to see if these ideas had already been offered, but didn't see anything. Sorry if I missed them but didn't have time to go back through all 40 pages!

The first part of you request should be covered by the tradelist. When you view a plant, scroll down and you'll see two links in the box titled "Trading Tools" - you can add it to your have or want list with a click.

Thanks!

You can also do this in a round about fashion. If you click on a user's name, you can see if they've rated certain places in Go Gardening or Garden Watchdog to see which places they are fond of and which ones they aren't. This of course depends on whether they've given ratings and comments for the places they shop or order from.

Well, I figured out how to add plants to my journal from the plant list and how to add them to my want list. I had tried to do it from the Journal before.

Don't you think it would be handy to share favorite places to shop?

I'm with you, largosmom. I think a Favorites section in My Info is needed. Be it for trades, shopping, photos, individual posts, or whatever. Perhaps even the ability to create sections within the section.

Dave can do this. He can do anything!

I agree that "wish lists" (such as for books and plants) are really nice to have - it would be great to be able to print them out and leave a copy where friends or family can find it for birthday or holiday gift ideas ;o)

And having a "favorites" list of places you like to buy or visit is also great fun ;o)

As JoanJ mentioned, we do already have that ability - add reviews for your mailorder transactions and to Go Gardening for your favorite parks, retail garden centers and nurseries, farmers' markets, parks, public gardens, etc. Not only can others see your favorites on your member page, but your reviews do other gardeners a big favor by telling them just WHY a mailorder or local resource is a good place to buy from or pay a visit to.

If your favorites aren't listed, let us know - we'll show you how to add them, or we'll do it for you so you can add your feedback.

There is another thread in this forum talking about a system-wide "Watch List" (or Favorite List if you wish). It's on the TODO.

I have entered in my favorite local places, and that works for a zip code search. I would like to know where say, Palmbob, or Todd Boland or some of our other Uber gardeners shop, for example as I trust their judgement, or maybe I will be in their area on a business trip. A system-wide favorites may be similar, but not exactly the same. If the system wide favs are organized by the major tabs on the site, that would do the trick, though.

I love this place, by the way. :-)

When you got to a member's page, for example here:

http://davesgarden.com/members/palmbob/

click on the "Go Gardening" comments and ratings link and you'll see every nursery they have reviewed.

Dave, what if we have a separate section on the member pages for "favorites" and move their favorite websites there, plus have links for

- favorite plants (all those that they've given a positive comment to);
- favorite bugs (ditto)
- favorite garden books (ditto);
- favorite mailorder sources (ditto);
- favorite garden destinations (any Go Gardening places that got 5 stars from the member)

Perhaps in the member profiles, we could also let members (maybe - just depends on the technical difficulties) specify their favorite forum and DG feature. (Or their top 2 or 3 forums ;o) and include these favorites in this same section.

That might encourage people to add more comments to PlantFiles, BugFiles, GWD, Bookworm, and Go Gardening....

I like the favorites idea--places you've rated in GW or Go Gardening may just be places you visited/ordered from, even if you gave them a favorable rating they might not truly be one of your favorites that you'll go to over and over, so it would be nice to know which ones really are people's favorites.

I agree that you need to be able to downselect which are your "real" favorites somehow, a simple checkbox or button click to have it show would do the trick. Otherwise, if it showed all of the things people have commented or posted to, a visitor to that information may be deluged with too much.

True. As long as the favorites are somehow linked/tied into our reviews in the GWD, Bookworm PF/BF and Go Gardening features having a way to create a "short list" from there would be great.

In, My Infor, I would love to be able to post some favorite shots of my garden. It could be a limited number. I know that I often read someones post and would love to see a sample of their garden but I don't feel like wading through masses of their entries to see if they have posted photographs of their garden. Thanks, Patti

Patti,

This is exactly what the "Garden Diary" is for. Click on "Journals" in the tabs up top, then click on Diaries.

Dave, I joyously use the diary and journal extensively, but I thought posting a picture with the bio information or somewhere on 'MY INFOR' would be a nice tidy feature. I post lots of things in my diary, but I keep most of them private, if I remember to check the box. Everyone sets up their diaries so differently that I was just looking for a simple place to be a garden voyeur when I continually run across interesting entries by someone. Patti
