Gorgeous pictures can lead to disappointment when plants arrive.

"Managing expectations" is part of the mail-order game, said Dave Whitinger, founder and manager of davesgarden. com, a gardening forum. The site includes a consumer "watchdog" rating of mailorder companies, with a top-30 list.

"Plants are usually smaller when they come in a mailorder," he said from his office in College Station, Texas.

"A lot of people are surprised when they order trees online, and they come bare-root, no leaves, no dirt. It’s like getting a stick.

"That’s OK. Just be prepared."

Great article!! Congrats Dave!!

:)

I had fun giving that interview; spent about half an hour talking to them about all kinds of gardening stuff. I expect they'll use more of the material for future articles. They are very nice people at the Columbus Dispatch.

Well, we're pretty proud of our Ohio reporters. ;) It was such a surprise to see your name and the mention; I found out about it from my Google news alert for DG, not by seeing it in the printed edition. It's so fun to get an e-mail alert for something and see it is one of our local papers that ran the story.

Yay for Dave, DG and the GWD ;o)

Thanks for posting that link Gardenwife! Nice article!

Congrats Dave! I will venture to say, as Gardening is getting more and more popular every year, you will be asked for many more interviews!
