Wow, Daylight Savings time will be on March 11

Tyrone, GA(Zone 7b)

I was going through my calendar this morning planning upcoming events and realized that DST will be 3 weeks earlier this year. I love the longer days and hopefully warmer weather to follow. I did a google search to confirm the date and found an interested article in the Chicago Tribune. Seems as if some computers may not be able to change the time correctly because they are programmed to change to DST the first weekend of April. (shades of Y-2K ...LOL)

What do you think of the new DST change?

I'm all for it, but like you say, there are some serious potential problems. Congress enacted this change a couple years ago, and most banks and airlines aren't prepared. Hopefully nothing will go wrong like 'Y2K', but it sounds like there will be problems with airline schedules..... maybe no one will notice! :)

I love long bright days so am rather looking forward to the new DST. We will be "Spring-ing forward" on March 11 this year and then turning clocks back on November 4th. My energy level really drops during the short winter days so I don't mind gaining a bit more daylight then too. It may seem a little strange in summer though to have it still be light at 10 pm!

It's simple enough to manually change computer clocks, and most computer calendar software will likely offer patches for the adjustment, although we are already very close to the March 11 deadline. I think the change in DST will go pretty smoothly, with most of the confusion taking place with banks, airlines and global stock exchanges. Of course Arizona and Hawaii do not have DST at all, so that will be just as confusing as ever.

Y2K turned out to be pretty much a fizzle. We were prepared with extra water, extra food and enough emergency supplies to care for a small town. Some of it is still sitting in our garage!

The reality here from the earlier time change is that we will be back to 7:15 AM darkness in the mornings...not so good. I do like DST otherwise, but don't care for such dark mornings again for a while...thought we were past that...ha!

Yes, the darkness in the morning may pose problems for kids waiting at bus stops, etc., but they won't be coming home in the dark from after school activities, sports and the like.

I'm wondering if plants, trees, etc., may get a little confused with the extra afternoon light and start growing earlier?

I think since the plants can't read a clock, they'll probably be okay. :)

I get so annoyed at the time change twice a year. It is quite nonsensical and disrupts sleep rhythms, etc. I recall a joke where someone was trying to explain daylight savings to a foreigner who never had had to deal with it. After the explanation, the response was, "Oh, I understand, it's a superstition!"

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Mulchmania -- you're right about disrupted sleep rhythms. I very rarely use an alarm clock, but just wake up with the morning light. When we change times it takes me about a month to get back into my sleep cycle.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

for me it wont be soon enough!!!!!
