Alert! Are you safe? Please read.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Youtube is showing how to make a bump key that allows anyone to break into your house. It is simple and easy, and shouldn't be allowed on the Internet as far as I am concerned! This is a video from a TV station, who interviewed locksmiths, about the problem. You need to know this!

Boy this is scarey, thank you for sharing.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Thanks for posting this, ceejaytown. It was on our local news last night too and they actually gave a demonstration of someone doing it. Just what we need in Albuquerque where home invasion crime is already at a scary level.

What is even scarier than the video is the fact that a set of eleven bump keys may be ordered at this site for $33.00. http://www.bumpkey.us/11-Keys-Bump-Key-Package-p-42.html?gclid=CI-HsIXftooCFSHsPgoddV_Kuwsite.

BUT, why bother with the lock, smash a window and you are in.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

George,

My DH always says a lock only keeps an honest man honest. The criminal will find a way. In my area it's really big to have a monthly security monitoring system. It costs about as much as satellite TV. Any break-in when system is armed and the police are called asap.

Thanks for sharing this warning!!!!!

Lamar, AR(Zone 7b)

Some people can be robbed & never know their house had been broken into.

Then why do we lock our doors?

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

When I lived in SC, the police said "A security system only gets us here a little faster. It doesn't prevent a break-in." They warned me not to think of the system as "making me safer". One officer said I was probably just as safe putting a sign in the driveway that I had a system (and not install one) as I was paying for the monitoring.

We lock our doors because it makes us feel more secure. If someone wants to break in bad enough to steal, they'll go through a window, for sure.

I live in the boonies now.. I don't always lock my doors.. sometimes I forget. Don't think it's a problem, though. Finding my house is pretty complicated, so I doubt any thieves with free time are wandering through my area.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Smashing windows causes alot of noise and may draw attention.

I saw that on our news also and could not believe they would air such a thing even if it can be found on the internet not all crooks knew. Well thanks to TV alot more of them do. And who can afford a 150.00 dollar lock for all their doors? That is what they said it would take to keep the locks from being bumped.

I would love to have a bigger dog than a doxie, but then you have vet bills. I am sure princess can cause a nasty bite.

The security system we had years ago depended on the phone line not being cut. If it was cut the system could not call out. I sleep with my 38. If someone knocks they better be able to shout above my doxies bark as if it is later at night I will just shoot thru the door.

The TV is a big downfall for those who don't already know these things to learn them. And lets not forget they have even told how one can get stuff to make a bomb off the internet.

Life has enough problems without the TV educating those who would never know or those who have no internet access.

If you go on ebay, people are not suppose to sell things to pick locks but they do. They sell it as if the person wants to be a locksmith. Complete with the manuel of how to do it.

I guess if someone wants in, we are not safe anyway you look at it.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I totally agree with you, Sandy. Totally!!

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

lol I ahemm third it! DH has been wanting a gun for ages and I've said no...this changed my mind. We have an ADT alarm and a dog (ok she's a yorkie so she doesn't count) but our locks would be easy to bump. So let em try and they will get met with a Rutger 44.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Sandy, I did have to laugh at

I doubt many breakins late at night knock on the door first. Might want to check that one out first. Could be a neighbor having a heart attack or something. Gun in hand, of course! LOL!!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Did sound funny. :o) All I can say if they are having a heart attack, is to please call first.

Without my Dennis I am a chicken without the muscle behind me. Gotta Depend on my 38 Ruger with hollow points. It won't matter my aim as they go in small and blow out a big hole. That should stop somebody till I can pull the trigger again.

I have a sign "in" my house that says "Don't trip over my Guard dog"

Sad also to say but if they break in your house and you only wound them, they can sue you. Isn't that ridiculous. I guess I can't just mame them got to finish the job. :O) This is not how I really feel. I hope if they start toward my door the feeling of the Holy Spirit turns them away. I don't want to hurt anyone. But I will if I have to.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

I think you can shoot them in your home. It's outside that gets tricky, even if they are trying to break in. I've been told to drag them on inside before you call the police.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine who has been a locksmith for 25 years - and I used to work for him so I wanted to see if this was the same technique I learned whilst working there - sure is, however - IF you invest in a decent set of locks - Schlage - higher grade - for example, it will be close to impossible, no matter how many bump keys you have! When we moved into our town-home we had the cylinders/locks changed to Schlage industrial and they are supposedly "bump proof", also - if you have a door with glass - change the lock to be key entry on both sides, it will be much harder for a would be thief to break the door. He literally has to break all the glass and remove whatever framing there is as well, can't just stretch his hand inside and open the latch. It might not stop the person, however, it'll slow him down and someone might just hear all the breaking of glass.

Guess the moral of my story is - you get what you pay for - cheap locks are no deterrent for a would be thief - he really does not need a bump keyset to get in! Invest in a security system - get a good quality lock - use deadbolts - get a gun (hehe) - whatever makes you sleep better at night and feel safer! :-)

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

I agree. A deadbolt lock is best. Those locks where you put the key in
the doorhandle are a joke, and the size of the dog is not a problem.
The only thing the dog can do is alert you that you need to dial 911, and
you need to make sure your gun is loaded and the safety is off.
People who are determined to break in and do you harm will think
nothing of shooting your dog, large or small. But an alert dog is the
best burglar alarm you can have.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

The bump keys work on deadbolts too.

DFW area, TX(Zone 7b)

Good grief ! Well, I've got slide bolts too and I use those
at night, but I guess that does no good when I'm out of the house.
Rats ! Guess I'll just have to trust God to watch over us.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

But you have a couple of dogs too. They make good noise!

Blythe, CA(Zone 10b)

This thread reminded me of something funny that happened to me years ago. I was going on vacation and decided to make it look like someone was home. My daughter had a large doll about 4 foot tall so I put the doll sitting at the kitchen table with a spoon in her hand and a plate on the table. I then left a dime light on in the room.
I couldn't believe the story I got when I got home. My mother in law knew we were gone on vacation and knew no one should be in the house so she called the police. She gave them the key to go inside and that's when they discovered it was only a doll. The police weren't too happy, but it did work, everyone thought someone was home. I guess no one noticed she never moved!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

That is too funny. Guess they never noticed she was always eating. Guess they thought she had a tape worm??? That is too funny. ROTFL

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL!!!! And she was up very late at night eating her curds and whey...

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

LOL. Guess the spider didn't show up cause she was still sitting there.or maybe he did and scared her stiff. Much better than scaring the stuffing out of her. ROTFL

Bolivar, TN(Zone 7a)

I live in Hardeman Co., TN and the rumor going around is that an old white woman with no teeth and driving a red car has been going up to people's front door, knocking and when people open the door, she sticks a gun in their face and robs them. Am waiting to see if it shows up in our local weekly paper. Haven't seen anything about it in the regional papers. She better not try that at our house. she would be in for a big surprise. I don't keep a sign in my window that says "I don't call 911". Actuall I would call 911, but only after the shooting was over.

Ilovejesus99 - try making the first bullet a snake shot. It comes out in a spray pattern. More coverage. Then empty the rest of mag. into them.

I have zero sympathy for anyone who would try to break into our house when we are home. LIZ

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

When I managed a thrift store, I had a customer who made dolls. She would buy children's clothing from us - shirts, pants, socks, shoes, hats and wigs, too, and then she would sew them together and then stuff them. The hands covered the otherwise-blank-face, and you stand the dolls in the corner like little penitent toddlers in time-out. They were life-sized and SO cute! She gave them away to friends and sold quite a few, too.

One day she had one in her back seat to drop off at a friend's house, and she stopped at a grocery store. When she came back out to her car, there was a crowd of people - including several police officers - standing around her car, one of them obviously trying to get the door open. She walked up and asked if she could help them, and one of the officers, with his hand on his handcuffs, said: "Is that your child in the car, ma'am?" She had a very hard time convincing everyone that it was just a doll! LOL After that, she transported them in her trunk!

Marylyn - Omigosh! That is funny!
LC2 - What does this mean?

Quoting:

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Yes please tell. I don't know what a snake shot is.

Marylyn, a friend of ours made DH one of those Pouty dolls as we could only have 1 child DS and he would have liked to have had a girl too. So about 8 years ago she made one. She is dressed in really cute shoes and a navy velour one piece pants set. And she looks very real. She has long blonde hair and
a cute easter like hat. She is adorable.
