Afraid of Clowns?

Tyrone, GA(Zone 7b)

Ringling Bros. Circus is in town this week and today's local newspaper has a front page article in the Living Section entitled "Fears of a Clown." Seems that being afraid of clowns is the "in" phobia. It brings to mind an experience I had as a child. Mom took me and my 5 siblings to the circus one year and we were lucky to sit near the front of the arena. Of course the clowns were abundant and pranced up and down the arena throughout the show. At one point, a clown (painted very garishly if I remember correctly) came close to me (I was sitting at the end of the aisle) and smiled a big toothy grin as he said something about having a good time. My memory is his very noxious breath that I know now to have been laced heavily with alcohol. He squeezed my arm and I pulled back and grabbed my brothers hand. After that, I thought the clowns were very creepy. Why can't all clowns be like the famous Emment Kelly ? :)

Anyone else have a clown story or thought on this subject?

clowns should be fun but i think of the scary jack-in-the-boxes when i think of clowns and have no desire to go anywhere to see them. don't think i'd call mine a phobia though.

I just happened to see this thread and immedietly thought of my dd.

We have a resturant here in town that I like to go too....The owner has a collection of clowns all over the place. My DD won't go there as she doesn't like the clowns. BTW....she is pushing 40!

I don't really know what caused her fear of clowns...it might have been the Fun House at Disney World. Jo

I don't like being around them; creepy, prickly hair on the back of my neck feeling. No bad experience; just hve never thought of them as "fun".

The newpaper article also had a picture of John Wayne Gacy when he dressed as a clown for children's parties. That image would surely drive anyone under the covers at night!
I think it may be a natural instinct for people to be wary or afraid of anyone behind a "mask."

I'm not afraid of clowns, never had a bad experience,
neither have any of my family, but none of us thinks that
clowns are funny.

The only clown I've ever seen that I would classify as funny
is Freddie The Freeloader, and that was only because
Red Skelton was so very funny. Otherwise, thanks, but no thanks.

When exactly does clown season start and what are the "bag" limits?
Are there any special regulations this year (such as method of taking, etc.)?
