Trade List Upgrade Malfunctions

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Someone checked my trade list and requested a plant I didn't have listed. She told me my whole list had changed and my entire want list was gone. When I investigated, I was told to convert my list into another format, and when I did so, everything really got strange. Tell me this is just something transitional. I spent a lot of time setting up all the trade info with pictures and links to the Plant Files.

Weezingreens,

I created a new tradelist system on December 25th and launched it on Monday. You can read about it here:

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/690830/

The biggest change is that it's now linked through PlantFiles and uses latin names (and they can be added directly from PlantFiles).

If you didn't have latin names in your old list, then when you copy them in to the new system it will be missing the names. I don't know of a way to automatically import these plants without that. Let me know if I can help in any way!

Dave, I use botanical names, but the sort on cultivar names is out of sync with the botanical names. Here is a print of part of my want list. Polish Spirit is a Clematis, not a campanula. Songbird is an Aquilegia, so the first entry is correct, but those under geranium are not. It is as if the first column resorted and the second did not, much as it can happen in spreadsheet.

I was really at a loss here until I finally find the bug that was causing this.

It is now finished and I re-imported your tradelist. Please take a look and let me know how it looks to you!

Ah, much better, Dave. I can see some issues I may have with not having a column for common name or description. It does not allow for color, explanations, etc. which have made our trade lists so unique. Also, our individual photos of the plant no longer appear. Is downloading these images no longer an option?

Weezingreens,

The color, explanations, common name, etc, can all be put into the special free-form field for each entry (access that through the Edit area).

The photos are now integrated with PlantFiles... What I can do, however, is make it a little more personalized by going through and for each entry you have, check to see if you personally uploaded a photo to that plant in Plantfiles and, if yes, use that one, and if not use the default image. What do you think about that idea?

Mine is still messed up, I have no names of Hosta or the info I put in the other spaces. The only thing that seems to show up is the year I bought the plant! These were all on my not available list!

sue

Sue,

What I can do is export your list into a spreadsheet format and send it to you, or we can just clear off your new tradelist and start again from scratch...

Dave can you clear my whole have list so I can start over? It looks like half of my names are missing!! LOL Thanks...

luvsgrtdanes - it's done!

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

That sounds fine Dave!!! Sorry for all the trouble I am causing you!

I will make sure I print out a new copy of the list when I am done!

sue

Sue, just to confirm - you want me to clear off your new tradelist, right?

Dave

Dave I know you are busy but I was wondering if you sent the spreadsheet to me?

I'm sorry Sue, I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to just start all from scratch. I will get the spreadsheet made as soon as possible!

Dave, Dave, Dave: Mayday, mayday! Somewhere in the upgrade I have lost all of my entries. All of them. Photos, links, descriptions: all of them gone. Where did they go? Can they be restored somehow or did I mistakenly click myself back to starting at square one of the new Tradelist?

I click on my Tradelist now and there's nothing there. Please advise. If I have to start over from scratch, please send Advil. :)

Poochella

Poochella, you can view your old tradelist here:

http://davesgarden.com/trading/edit/

Note that the new trade list doesn't have all the same fields that the old one did.

My hero! Thanks Dave. And is it okay to leave my old collection of photos etc right where it is, using the new features for future additions?

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

Dave when I clicked on Poochella's old list from the link above it brought me to my old list of NOT Available that would not show up before.... go figure!!!

How long do you plan on having the old tradelist available to us before you delete them?

sue

The old tradelists will be up until the end of the month and I'll then delete them, so please make sure you copy whatever you want off before that!

Hi, I think I did, but how do we tell if we are using the new trade list or the old one??

Just click on "Trading" up at the top and you'll be in your new list.

dave

North Augusta, ON

ok...thank you..I'm in the new one then..whew

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Dave, in order to move my old trade list and photos into the new one before they're deleted, can I use the "clone this item" or "copy to my journal" features and then move the entire thing to the new tradelist from there?

Or, do I need to move words and links from the old and reload photos to the new tradelist manually? Is there another efficient way you can recommend to move 90% of my entries over?

Sorry to bug you again.
Pooch

Pooch,

When you go to your new tradelist area, you will find a link at the top that will automatically copy over all your entries.

As for the images, you can't copy them over because the new tradelist does not have a feature for images directly. If you upload your images to the corresponding plants in PlantFiles, however, the image you upload will be used as the thumbnail for your plants.

Won't this cause a mass uploading of pictures into the plant files though? Everybody is going to want to have their own pictures.
I spent the summer taking pictures of all my plants, I thought it would be nice to have them beside my trades (unfortunately I haven't learned how to get them out of my cellphone and into my computer).

The more photos in PlantFiles, the merrier!

Dave, I go to my New Tradelist, "Manage Your Tradelist" and I see no link or tab to import my old tradelist. I may have clicked on this in a hurry a while back, but I didn't understand it, and it sure didn't work. Don't ask me what I've done since then! I can't tell you.

I didn't have genus/species names, just a big list of dahlias.
Is there a way to restore that "import" tab/option on my New Tradelist so I can try it again carefully? Or should I just start manually copying things over? Sorry to be so thick about this.

Poochella,

I took a look and you only had one item in your old tradelist. This is why nothing was copied over. Maybe you are confusing the journal with the tradelist? Nothing has changed with the journal.

Dave

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Nope, not the journal. My one item is 125 or so dahlias ( in the old tradelist.) If anything copied over it was just the first few words of that page, none of the other entries that follow it came along. And I might have copied and pasted those first few words myself just to see what happened in the new spot.

So, should I begin doing a manual update to the new tradelist?

I see - you have every entry stuffed into one entry. Let me take a closer look.

dave

Yes, you will need to input these individually (and manually) into the new system.

If you send me a dmail with the complete list of cultivars, I can automate the insertion for you...

dave

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for looking into my supersized entry so quickly. I'll Dmail a partial list of just cultivar names and see how that goes. I won't bother you anymore about this, I swear.

No problem - I'm happy to help.

Please send the complete list of cultivars that you want in your new tradelist.

dave

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

Dave, can we have a few more days to fix our trade list's?

PLEASE!!
