PEEPS...gotta love 'em!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

This morning I was digging through
my closet for something when a box of Peeps caught
my eye. You may be familiar with the sweet, sugary
marshmallow shapes which make an appearance not only
during spring festivities, but now on other occasions. Bunnies,
chicks and more in all colors.

So I was wondering, for those who love Peeps, how do
you eat them? Do you stuff your mouth full, do you savor one
at a time, or do you hide them from everyone else?

Personally, I like them stale. The harder, the better. I usually
poke a few holes in the package, then toss them into the back
of a cupboard for months, even a year or more until they 'ripen'.
This works well for my style, as I can buy them on clearance for
a dime a box. LOL

Peep addicts, unite!

I am from a family of 14 kids and on Easter we always raced to find our basket, then find someone else's so we could ditch the peeps in theirs!! Not one of us liked them-don't know why mom and dad bought them! There are several in-laws now who like them and I think they all like them stale and hard....what is up with that? Give me chocolate anything over icky, gooey, gritty, gross peeps!! Blech! ...Other than that I don't have much of an opinion about them! MW

If you like them stale you should check the dollar stores. They have no shame about selling them weeks after the related holiday. And there are various videos on youtube dedicated to microwaving them in interesting ways.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Egads! A peep in the microwave! Say it isn't so!

LOL

Bolivar, TN(Zone 7a)

Saw valentine peeps in a dollar store last Sat. Think Wal-Greens may also have the valentine ones. LIZ

Billerica, MA(Zone 6a)

LingOL at this thread.
Love 'em! But the fresher the better!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Peeps, love 'em. 'Ripened' is best, then bite off their little heads and nibble away at the rest, savoring each delicious bite. I also delight in frequently grabbing a regular marshmallow which has been exposed to the atmosphere for several weeks in the bake center and attained a marvelous resistant, yet not brittle texture. Sadly they don't last long enough to become "completely ripe". Three cheers for Peeps.

If your dollar store is like the big one near here, you should check to make sure that they are from 2007. I've noticed that most of the national brand food items that they have mixed in with the generic brands are actually expired. Some of the items by months. I considered trying to report this when I first noticed it. I don't know if this is common or just happens in the local stores I happened to check. They must be buying old store stock.

Anyway, here you are: http://geekbabe.com/peeps/ The link to the gardening with peeps page doesn't work. And they don't have the page where that guy puts them on hamburgers, but they have a lot of other odd stuff.

Fun!

Many thanks for sharing that link.

I know what you mean about the lower priced stores and their
out of date foods. Ugh!

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Peeps are just little piles of colored sugar, aren't they? You could just suck on a sugar cube. Those are already hard. ;^}

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ah, but they don't have that elastic 'snap' you get
when ripping the heads off those little marshmallow
creatures.

LOL. Hubby ravishes barbequed ribs and I ravish rabbits.
Marshmallow rabbits, that is.

:-)

But you can't do this with sugarcubes:

wuvie--I'm a little worried about you!! :^0

andidandi--I laughed and laughed at the video when that stuff started oozing out the slots. You certainly have a point. They looked like toasted marshmallows on steroids, but I'll bet they didn't smell very good.

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

I thought the Youtube clip might be what a friend described as their Easter tradtion - they give each peep a toothpick "sword" and put them in the microwave to fight it out.

PS I'm so glad you were talking about real peeps, calling people "peeps" really gets annoying.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, gosh, dmc, you never have to worry about me using that term for
people, LOL. Maybe when I was a teenager I would have used it, but
definitely not now.

:-) Peeps and chickies. Chickie peeps. I love that combination!

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

I don't want mwhit to feel lonely here so I thought I'd jump in and said I agree with her yucky, gooey, gritty description. But, my husband likes them! I found cat shaped ones at Halloween this year with COCOA powder covering. I did think they were passable (anything with chocolate is edible lol).

dmcdevitt-
You mean the jousting? They got that too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypKRsSsV0Nk

This brings up a question: What's the shape for the regular non-holiday ones? I don't think I've ever seen them when they weren't in a holiday shape.

This message was edited Feb 6, 2007 8:29 PM

And I'm with mwhit-

I used to trade them for those eggs. It's hard to describe them. They were sort of sugar outside and hollow in the inside. I've never seen them except in Easter Baskets. I wouldn't touch them now, but they seemed like a good idea at the time.

My currrent holiday favorite are those candy corn pumpkins.

Schroon Lake, NY(Zone 4a)

Oh yeah, that's it...peep jousting....

Tiffin, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Andidandi & Merigold.. for a while there I thought I might be the only "Peep-hater" out here!~ Didn't you just hate it when the Easter grass got stuck on the sides of them where they were pulled apart? Give me a nice Reese's peanut butter egg and someone else can have all the peeps!

Thornton, IL

Peeps are gross! I hate them too. Had to laugh at the cocoa powder ones being passable, but being covered in chocolate doesn't make anything edible! Or does it? ;-)

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Peeps are over processed, artificially colored, sugar coated marshmallows. I love 'em!!! Always have.

I have a friend who is also a peeps fiend, and we were talking about them once with another person, who didn't know us well, and she thought we were talking about peep shows! LOL! Apparently, they're not called "peeps" where she comes from.

Oh I to hate the peep! I don't like the gritty texture of sugar...also hate sugar cookies dusted in it...ew. I like frosting. But the peeps are cute! Funny you found a package from last year! LOL! I opened a toybox I just save blankets in and there was a CADBURY! I found this last summer and the best I could determine was it must have been in there 2 years according to the easter basket it was in!!!!! I only thought about eating momentarily but DH snapped me back to reality. LOL!

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

mwhit, you and I think a like on this matter. LOVE the reeses eggs. Have you had a Reaster Bunny? They are LARGE, mmm. PrairieGirl, don't you like chocolate? Okay, it can't make everything edible lol.

Thornton, IL

i LOVE chocolate merigold, had to think about that one, though I have heard that chocolate covered ants (grasshoppers too?) are nice and crunchy! Eeeew.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Tir Na, LOL. That reminds me of my selfish chocolate moment
a few years ago.

When purchasing cologne, my free gift was Godiva chocolate. Having
kids, I was going to relish this all by myself and not share. So I
hid it in my gift box. Months later, I found it and thought "Hmm, it's time
to indulge!"

The chocolate had absorbed the cologne from the box, but I thought
what the heck, this was Godiva chocolate. I tried. I really tried. But I
just couldn't eat that perfumed chocolate, no matter how good it was.

Perhaps next time I'll share. LOL

I'm so glad I am not the only peep-hater in the group. I could eat Reese's all day long and most other chocolate (except chocolate-covered cherries, and even those if I'm desperate).

Hope Valley, RI(Zone 6b)

How to roast a peep.
Get a nice fire going in the fire pit. Gather around a few loved ones. Stick a peep on a stick and slowly rotate until the sugar carmalizes and the marshmallow is gewwy. They make the best roasted marshmallows.

I love peeps....cant get them here, and havent had one is 3 years I guess....It used to be you could only gt them at easter time, but now they come out at all the holidays in the States, and they used to come in yellow and pink only........ I dont think i have seen any when it isnt a holiday.

I would love to try roasting them, they must be good. what was that fiasco with the microwave? gosh, i had to weatch, but it was sad.......

i dont know about eating them stale though, i know I have in the past, but not out of choice....

Westchester, IL(Zone 5b)

OMG, this is hilarious, I can't believe someone posted about stale Peeps, LOL! Personally, I don't like them. I always think that will change and have one or two around Easter and then I'm like, "Ewwww, where are the Cadbury Eggs?" I was addicted to those as a child. Remember the bunny that would make chicken noises?

ANYWAY, so back to STALE Peeps. Apparently, my dad is addicted to Peeps. One year I was going to throw them out and he was like, "OMG, PEEPS!" LOL! So he had one and was like, "Ack, this tastes like crap! Aren't they supposed to be hard?" I said only the stale ones were hard. So, we devised the Peep Experiment.

We set one Peep on top of the fridge, unwrapped, and left it there to achieve the perfect hardness. A year went by, nope, not hard enough. Two years went by, nope, still not there. Sometime between two and a half and three years, my dad said it was perfect and ate it, LOL! He said that's how he always remembered them as being. I had to laugh, cause, what... did my Grandma leave them in the cupboard for 3 years and then give them to my dad or what?! ROTFLMAO! Too funny!

And I've seen Mortal Peep fight on YouTube. I like blowing them up in the microwave as well, lol.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

HA HA HA!

You know what, I think your Grandma must have purchased
them on sale, for next year's use in baskets. Maybe she forgot
about them a few years, LOL.

I've had some in my closet for well over a year, they are getting
ripe, but sometimes they suddenly go overboard if there is too
much moisture in the air. When they crumble and break, they
are too far gone for me.

I like the rubbery SNAP of their heads! LOL

First time I've seen this thread. Our office is moving to a new location, oddly enough i found a pack of purple peeps buried deep behind books on one of my shelves. along with an address book from approx 20yrs ago. The peeps looked fine, but about everyone in the address book is dead. Long live the peeps I reckon.

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

peep-shows... ROTFLMAO

Holy funny! Back in college, I hung out with some engineers that just loved the English word "PEEP". They meant it not in the marshmallow goodness way, but in the way peep-shows describe. PEEP! I can still hear them screaming it across the campus lawn. PEEP! One guy went so far as to get onto a university chat room by the nickname pEEp, all the way down to the capitalization as I describe. PEEP!

Thanks for the laughs & the good memories...

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

Wuvie
I was at a Big Lots store last week and one whole aisle from floor to the top shelf was filled with Peeps, all colors. It was as if I were having a nightmare!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

This thread is hilarious. cadbury eggs are the only other things that are worse than Peeps...and I didn't think that was even possible.

We used to take the peeps and put them on top of the brick wall and watch them die a slow painful death in the hot sun. They would melt into the blocks and stay there for years. They were like eating sponges.

They are suddenly very popular again.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Hey! I love those Cadburys! Though I can't eat the whole box in one day as I used to. LOL!!! To sweet!

Franklin Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

I always sent Easter care packages to our girls when they were in college dorms. I used empty canned ham containers for the "baskets" and included green plastic "straw", jelly beans and other candies, a few small toys and PEEPS. At one time or another, they all reported that the "good" candy went right away but the Peeps were forgotten until cramming for exams a few months later and having a sugar craving at 3am. Hard-as-a-rock peeps with green plastic straw stuck to the sides. Yum! They've become a family joke and I still buy Peeps and include them in any box I'm sending to family members.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

i love my peeps. i take out one "string" of them andthen stuff one peep at time in my mouth until i make them all disappear. (sp) LOL

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

In time, Peeps turn into those styrofoam packaging worms.
