Thanks, you two. Yes, I think I'm going to have to approach Dave about it. He was kind enough to go in and move some things around for me that didn't transfer well, so I've been hesitant to ask for more right now. He's getting swamped with requests, I know. However, as Equil says, if we don't ask for some changes people will start dumping their plants in the wrong spots in order to be able to enter them. I can see a problem with excluding the common names and including cultivar names instead. I know this is done to link it all to the PF, but some gardeners do not recognize the botanical names, and most of our seeds are collected, so not many are technically cultivars.
Hybrid or not?
Yes, he was a sweetheart and said he was going to add video clips for me. I'm thrilled. They have been adding a lot of features so I know how you feel. What currently happens when there's no listing for a plant in the PlantFiles. Then what do people do? I can think of about 30 plants I've been meaning to add to the PlantFiles but didn't because I didn't have the time to go and look up all the details. I have no doubt I'm not the only one who has a PF "to do" list out there. What are folk going to do when there's no PF listing? Just start creating entires to be able to list a plant?
I think Dave has more time to work on stuff now after the Name Media deal, so don't feel bad asking for things, if he can't do it then he won't, but this sounds like something that would benefit a lot of people so it's definitely worth suggesting. I think it's asking for trouble if people can't add in their own plants and have to go through plant files, it's one thing if you have a real, clearly ID'd plant then it's nice to make the PF entry, but for garden "mutts" I think we'll end up with a lot of incorrect entries if that's what people have to do to be able to trade things. (I have a PF to do list too--I like to put all my plants into my journal by importing them from PF, and I have some things in my garden that aren't in there yet so I need to look them up and get them entered--kept saying I was going to do it on a rainy weekend this winter, but we have had hardly any rain this year so I haven't got to it yet!)
Yes, winter is a great time to work on the PF. I need to take some time and see how many entries in my tradelist are affected.
