Ebay bidding question...

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hello all,

I've been on Ebay for quite some time, but I'm stumped.

In brief, I bid on an item which is currently still running, but
am no longer the high bidder.

In looking at the other bidders on the bidding history,
a person we will call Bob bid on the item and passed my
bid amount. Then Jim came along and bid, too, passing
Bob's bid.

But when I look at Bob's bidding history, and Jim's, the
item does not come up on their page.
Yes, I have clicked 'even if not high bidder'.

When I look at my own bidding history page, it shows
"Bidder 3" is the high bidder. Is this something new on Ebay?
Once upon a time you could look at anyone's bidding page at
any time unless they were a private bidder.

Am I confused? Why can't I see what other items the people
who outbid me are bidding on? Can we only see what they won
once they atually won the item? I wonder about the reason for this
change.

Many thanks for any replies,
Karen Marie

Ah, I think I can answer my own question. Ebay bidders
got sick of other people sneaking in on them at the last
minute, sniping their items because one could see what
they bid on. This made it easy to shop on Ebay. Just look
at someone else's shopping list and snipe.

Hubby and I just figured it out.

The reason you can't see the others is because they just made a change in January so that you can no longer see the items a person has bid on in their history. You can only see the items that they have won in closed auctions.

It has nothing to do with sniping. Sniping is good and they would never want to discourage it. The change was meant to stop the nigerian scammers from being able to contact bidders with fake emails and offers pretending to be the seller. A related new change is that once the item goes over $200 all bidders will be hidden and you won't know who you are bidding against. It's been very controversial because it also masks shilling.

Whooo hooo! I won, I won!

Andi, thanks for the reply. I forgot all about the practice of
fellow bid bumping.

Ebay really has come far, my gosh. I'll never forget the first
time I ever heard of it, an internet friend was multi-tasking, saying
she was bidding on a dress. At the time I thought it was most bizarre.
And now look at us.

:-) KM
