Emelle, your cannas are a stand out color.
My daughter did not end up picking that University, even though both her Dad and I went there and the campus is like one huge garden: Michigan State University.
Instead she has chosen to go to University of MIchigan which is in higher standing, but is pretty much surrounded by a city. :o(
Crocus and Glory of the snow are finally blooming. :o)

QuillGordon, Where did you get your bird houses? Love them! I am just starting to put bird house into my gardens (I have so many bird who fight for place to stay)

Haines Falls, NY(Zone 4b)

toofew-
I adore your arbor- I'd like to do something similar. I'm going to show yours to my husband and see what we can come up with. I live in the woods so I'm leaning to one a bit more rustic.
This photo is from last june- 2006. Astilbe in the forground and sweet cicely in the back.

Bird houses :
My husband made a lot of bird houses ,for starlings .The holes had to be drilled a certain size so that other birds could not get in and harm the starling babies .
Starlings do a wonderful job in feeding on grass grubs which do so much damage to our pasture land by destroying the grass roots ,so we encourage them.
I am not sure if I have shown this picture before somewhere -forgive me if I have ,but I think it is so funny
Zoe our cat .

Great photo of the cat!

European Starlings here are a major nuissance -- people try to protect the native birds from them and from English House Sparrows like you were trying to protect your starlings in NZ!

There's a great thread started over in the Wildlife Gardening forum with designs and links to designs for birdhouses.

Morrinsville ~Waikat, New Zealand

Thank you for the link ,It sounds really good ,I hope I can access it ,as there are many forums that are only available to subscribed members .I really want to make a bird feeder ,with winter approaching ,so will look out for advice there too .
I am astonished at your story about the European starlings -I would think they are the same as ours ,as the early settlers to NZ brought English birds with them .They are terribly messy ,trying to make their untidy nests in barns ,even in tractor engines .They don't seem to be a threat to other birds here ,as magpies and minahs are .
Emelle.

Emelle, I post the same pictures on several threads, only a couple of times has anyone ever written about that. A good photo should be shared-repeatedly.

Blue, and what a nice combination of color, the purple and yellow!

Here is mine today. Some roses in full flush, some like these just starting, early spring flowers fading into mid spring. Lots of lovely blank spaces just waiting for new friends to be planted!!

Your pictures are just gorgeous -a sight for tired eyes .Being Autumn here ,I have just cleared up tatty dahlias ,scruffy other bits and pieces of my garden ,so it is such an inspiration to see the wonderful new life in bloom -I really love the archway - how inviting !The mauve picket colour gives a soft effect that I like.

dale a, you can invite yourself over anytime, for anything as long as I can come and see your garden the next day! The swaths of hot colors you have are fantastic.
Soulgardenlove, you know you are very welcome any time.
Today my beautiful new herbs came today to fill in some of those "holes". Much of my cottage garden is made up of herbs and roses.

99% of the photos I post are elsewhere-places I work, public gardens, homes that I drive by.....

I have my camera with me and when I see something that catches my eye....

I will even walk up onto the lawn and snap a shot, like this orchid. It is 6' around, in a container under a tree, must have had 50 spikes on it. It was put there at least 20 yrs ago

I always take multiple shots, then edit for the permanent collection I have.

Thumbnail by DaleTheGardener
Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

I have file folders on the computer, Flowers, Compositions, Commercial, Cottage, Croton, Begonias, Trees, etc etc

Thumbnail by DaleTheGardener
Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

I have a file called DG Garden, every photo I put on this site is in there.

Thumbnail by DaleTheGardener
Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

I would guess that I take about 30 photos every day

Thumbnail by DaleTheGardener
Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Some are what I call 'head shots' - trying to capture some element/quality of a plant.

Thumbnail by DaleTheGardener
Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Some are shot a to get a design element.

Thumbnail by DaleTheGardener
Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Some are taken for 'point of view'

And some I take, then look at and say "what was I thinking?"
