Well, first, I had to learn how to spell cotyledons... here are some that were started on Monday 1/29/07 . As they germinate, hopefully I'll catch all the cotyledons before they are gone. THANK you RON for everything. I did soak approximately 60 types and used superthrive and Hydrogen Peroxide to soak the seeds, most seeds were nicked, some were too small so they were just soaked for about 12 hours. All were sowed the same day/night on Monday. So far 41 varieties have germinated. Hopefully I won't get kicked out of the house.
This is how they started off.. don't laugh..lol.. I did not have any markers, so I used plastic knives (what the heck).. and wrote on the cups too. We just moved here and i don't even have mini-blinds to cut into markers, right now we are using paper as curtains, sad but true.
cotyledons of various species and varieties
Love the domes. Where did you get them?
Discount Hydroponics in Riverside, CA before we moved.. I'm sure they mail out too. You can probably find them in any Hydroponics store in your area.
edited to correct the name of the Hydroponics store: www.discount-hydro.com
also noticed that they do not carry the domes on their site, or at least I could not find them. Perhaps in their catalog.

Gourd - Glad to see things springing to life...your the first on several of those...definite green thumbs...
The 'Bone Yellow' from Africa >looks like an Ipomoea obscura...the flowers on this one should be larger than the usual I.obscura, but still not quite as large as an Ipomoea ochracea...
Very interested to see the exact shape and vein patterns on the other species cotyledons when they unfold and open up completely...
I like the plastic utensiils and paper plate markers...very resourceful...

The old army brat in me can't wait to see the MG flowers from all those places. I. parasitica Mexico has in intriguing name - can you tell us a little more about it? Does it come from a jungle where it climbed all over its companions? Or a desert where it behaved as a different kind of parasite?
bluespiral/Karen - I used to have a photo of an Ipomoea parasitica variety that showed the same flower, but had the most peculiar 'branches' that I've ever seen on any Convolvulaceae species...the 'branches' looked like the main central rib/vein of the side 'leaves' had become very enlarged and emanated out from the main vine stem like a spiraled octopus tentacle >but remained horizontal to the ground...never saw anything else like it...these structures were the > leaves(!)...
so the parasitica epithet may have procedded from the tentacled look of some of the varieties with this type of pseudo-tendriled look...
lost that photo in one of my hard drive crashes...although it may still exist 'somewhere' on one of my bazillion floppy discs...
Most Ipomoea parasitica has heart shaped leaves...nice large blue flowers with yellow throats and has not as of yet been introduced into cultivation...hoping to remedy that 'void' relatively soon...

I found the domes on the site.......2nd product down
Ron, Thanks for the encouragement, without you, these would not be possible.
Have put most of the photos in my DG Diary if anyone is interested, they were too many to put here.
Joseph, I sure will keep you guys informed, hopefully I did not start these too soon and can keep them alive.
AZreno, thanks for posting that link.. I love those domes. Without them, for sure these babies would not have done as well.

Thank you Joseph,
the camera is a Fuji FinePix 2650 and I got it at Walmart 5/9/03 for 197.94, but had to buy extra batteries and a card reader for the computer, it did come with a limited card reader, DH got me another one that holds over 1000 photos. You can add accessories later on.
The funny thing is, when I was at GW someone there told me to always make the pixels 600 because GWeb could not load up anything bigger. For some reason that always stuck in head until these past few days. I made the pixels 820 and look at the difference in quality, also used the macro and zoom. It took me only three years..lol to realize this..
Anyway, this is a really neat little camera and it is probably 100.00 now. I seem to recall I saw the price somewhere. There would be some things you must have along with a DG camera, rechargeable batteries and a recharger too.
Wedding Bells MG
Thank you for all the information and all the links........Wow. It makes me feel like I have just been a Zombe my whole life. I am going to turn my bedroom into a hort lab. Frank
What a great set of reference pictures! Very nice. - Arlan
Thanks Frank, Thanks Arlan
You guys want to hear something funny... i went to Lowes yesterday to buy some mini-blinds.... DH was so happy, he thought they were for the windows ...lol. little did he know they were to make plant markers. Now I've done it.. i got at least 400 markers from each blind (the nice long ones) ...

I was also wanting a new camera, was looking at the Canon S3 or IS and the one you mentioned, But since I kinda figured this one out in such a short time..lol I'll keep it.
How I keep some of my seeds. Anyone have a better suggestion? I use the paper envelopes so that when and if seeds form, there are already envelopes to collect and dry the seed before they go into baggies. There are more varieties in other containers.

Those domes look really nice. The price is right also.
I should really start concentrating on making a nice growing environment indoors next fall. It sure would make winter a whole lot more enjoyable.
I was going to make the birdroom into another bedroom, but a winter gardening area indoors sounds like so much more fun.
I will have to look at that site a little closer and see what I can build.
It does seem like the more a person gets into gardening the more the creative side takes over and you just can't stop and forget about it during the colder months.
I bet those domes would really be effective for the wintersowers here who like to start early with seeds outdoors also.
Hi Windy,
Yes, these dreary days here have been more cheerful with these domes and the excitement of each seed that germinates. If you get yourself some carts that have wheels you can wheel them outside in the summer and still use your rooms for other things, when winter comes, back come the carts. I really like growing during the winter, but soon the seedlings are all over the place.
I still need to start the gourds, peas, watermelons, etc.. will wait another couple of weeks before those go in.
A.
I am going to try to figure out how long it takes for those to germinate and count backwards from about a week before the last frost is expected. I will get at least that much of a jump on growing. But next year I am going to have the inside thing going.
You know how it gets so hot some days in the summer that it is just too hot to do anything outdoors? Well those are the days I can start setting up my winter indoor growing in the air-conditioned house. LOL
I am glad to find you have taken lemons and made lemonade out of the zone movement.
I have been experimenting with sprouting in perlite, sand, seed potting mix, and coconut fiber. So far the coconut fiber has worked the best for me,
beth
Look at you go! Great to see pictures of the leaves. Can't wait to see the flowers. You sure have some names I haven't heard before.....hmmmmm...lol.
:) Donna
