Ty Ty has a terrible reputation and - as I understand it - they demanded to be removed from the Watchdog list after over 90 negatives were lodged against them. And they WERE removed. This is understandable as lawsuits are expensive and unpleasant - but how could they sue when it was all these separate people relating bad experiences that each one had had?
Isn't the purpose of the Watchdog to let us know about negative feedback so we can avoid these places?
Watchdog - Ty Ty removed?
We removed that company in 2004 when we didn't have the funds to fight a lawsuit. There was no choice.
I involved the members in the discussion, and it was unanimous that it would be better to just remove them rather than risk losing the whole site over an expensive legal batter.
Hopefully those days are gone and we won't have to acquiesce to companies like that in the future.
Dave
I notice they are still in business. Will you put them back in the Watchdog now that you have some insulation from lawsuits?
I don't know... There are specifics about the circumstances that I have never been free to discuss. :(

Dave, We appreciate the position you were faced with in 2004, so removing ty ty from the watchdog list was the right decision. We have been discussing this today on the Georgia Forum. A fellow "chatter" was looking for a recommendation about the nursery for her sister. I was hoping, (maybe naively ) that Ty Ty cleaned up their act so to speak after getting so many negative comments. I was thinking of doing a test order to see how things go. Would I be able to comment on the experience in watchdog or is Ty Ty gone forever? Thanks. Liz
Personally I don't know if it's worth the potential trouble to put them back in--if you search for them in Watchdog now you get this message (sorry, I can never remember how to do the boxed quote thing):
"You may be searching for a company that is no longer listed in the Garden Watchdog. For questions about their removal from the Garden Watchdog, you should contact this vendor directly. We also recommend contacting the Better Business Bureau to ascertain any company's track record with their customers."
Personally, this would raise a big red flag for me, any reputable company would be happy to be listed in Watchdog, so I think this message should be enough to deter people from buying from them, or at the very least cause them to ask about them on one of the forums before purchasing.
gliz--I wouldn't hold your breath that they've changed, if you have extra money that you want to throw away you can just send it to me and I'll put it to better use than they would! LOL
Can't you put a disclaimer, saying these are not the opinions of Dave's Garden...that Our members report their own personal opinions they have derived from their dealings with said companies??..Seems they have banned free speech!!...As dedicated gardenern It's still up to us to tell people our opinions when they post questions about the reputation of online companies....Jeanne
ecrane, you are probably correct. I find it incredible in this day and age of global commerce that a business would ignore comments.. but my curiosity has gotten the better of me. I was only going to order a 1 gallon white pine for $4.95. But, I will think about this a bit more.
I do agree with Jeanne that a disclaimer may be the answer. Liz
I'm in the camp that feels it would be best to leave this alone. They requested, or was it demanded, to be removed from the Watchdog. Dave complied, not because the comments were in error, but because it wasn't worth the cost of a legal battle and all that could have come from that.
If another company with decent comments asked to be removed, for whatever their reason, I don't think it would be right to later put them back in again. I don't think it would be right to put Ty Ty back in again either. That may be grounds for a lawsuit in itself.
I think the warning when trying to search Watchdog for them is sufficient.
What if it's the members who are allowed TO ADD businesses to an open forum of Dave's Garden WatchDog...this could clear up both dilemma's that are plaguing the decision...Jeanne
I involved the members in the discussion, and it was unanimous that it would be better to just remove them rather than risk losing the whole site over an expensive legal batter.
Never heard of "legal batter", have heard of "beer batter", "tempura batter" etc. How many lawyers do you mix with the flour and/or cornmeal to make it?
Or is it a sly baseball reference?
Ahhhh...if only it were as simple as choosing the appropriate batter before frying 'em good and extra crispy. ;o)
Lawyers are usually rolling in bread, so bread crumbs work best.
And they usually have egg on their face, so roll in egg prior to the bread crumbs.
Skewered and flambed, maybe? Barristers Foster, anyone?
(Hopefully any lawyers in the crowd know we're JUST KIDDING, right? No lawyers were harmed in the making of these wisecracks, and all that.)

I am one that didn't know about the TyTy thing from a few years ago, because I wasn't around then. And I wish I'd known more about that whole thing, because I placed an order with TyTy a few months ago, for some amaryllis. They didn't come and they didn't come, so I called them to check on the order and they said they were due to be shipped in the next few days. After doing a bit more research and receiving a copy of my order via e-mail that I'd placed on the phone, and becoming alarmed that I couldn't even understand what they had written down for the cultivars I had ordered, I called them back and canceled the order. They were quite nice about it, and said they could understand why I wanted to cancel (It had been too long since I'd placed the order and they still hadn't shipped it yet). They promptly canceled my order and I got a refund on my credit card within a few days.
kbaumle,
Sounds to me like maybe you lucked out....whew.
guess I would encourage anyone to steer clear of this type co. That's just my own personal opinion, served with a grain of salt.......
