Someone ask earlier if anyone had pics of a scarlet tanager. Here's a link to my nesting pair last spring. They are really hard to photo because they are so fast. To my dismay Blue Jay attacked the nest a killed the young ones.

And a couple more friends
Sworn enemies, by the way they're threatening each other!
Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon Junco) and Chestnut-backed Chickadee.

LOL - you're right, Resin, but they actually did both stay and share the food! Thanks for giving the names - I often forget in my excitement at sharing a photo!!!
Nice pics Murmur! Like that roof shot.
Oh wow, the Scarlet Tanager is beautiful! I briefly saw a red bird last year (not a cardinal) in a tree by the house and by the time I got back out with my binoculars and camera, it was headed to the woods. Don't know what it was and didn't notice if the wings were black.
I really like your Flicker pics Murmur, I've never seen one around here, we have lots of woodpeckers though.
Beautiful Tanager pic Linth!!
fabulous pics everyone. I see more of the females than male Tanagers
At a distance they are as bright as a cardinal. They nest in tall hardwoods, so I have read. I see the males in a couple of tall mature oaks in my nearby woods. They have a very distinct song.
Gldandrews: That's so sad, but how wonderful to have them nest in your yard!
Linth: Another great pic. I would so love to see one with my own eyes, but your photo is pretty close!
Murmur: I love your "Mutt & Jeff" photo.

Bluegrassmom,
The one's I had nesting here in NC built in a oak tree the limb was overing the road.
In the Audobon Society's hand book of Birds it says they almost always nest in oaks.
When I saw the female with nesting material, that is how I found the nest, started looking in the oak's.
Gldandrews, sure hope they nest there again - and no jays show up. You must have been devastated (at least I would have been!)
Thanks Murmur, I was devastated. It is all a part of nature but it still was awful. They nest close by every year this was the first time I had actually found the nest.
Gldandrews: Any idea what attracted them to nest near you? I'm hoping to at least attract one to "visit" this year. Do you know what they like to eat? Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I live in a secluded wooded area in the mountains is the only thing I can think of. No special kind of food or anything that I do, just lucky I guess.
Maybe they prefer the mountains over the low country! :)
Thanks,
Deb
Hey everybody, Becky has birds!!! She started a feeder part 4 to show them off! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/690200/
We started a new Daily Pics Page 1 (without a date in the title), hopefully it will be a little less confusing. Thanks!

That's great pelletory, I do think with it having the date a lot of people thought it was an older one. Good idea.
Just seeing the photos of the painted buntings in this thread for the first time. Those are really great photos. Actually, all of the photos are great.
