Since this is part 2, this might be 'missed', so I'm adding my post again (which was at the end of part 1). ;-))

Congrats to Dave and to his gang!

A hearty welcome to Jeff and his gang!

So now when I type in Gardens.com I come here? How long before the davesgarden.com is completely gardens.com and the URL does not work anymore?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Windy,

Gardens.com will be the new site: gardens.com
Dave's garden will remain: davesgarden.com (the Boston people already call it "Dave's" *grin*)

currently gardens.com is simply being redirected to davesgarden.com, but this will change as soon as gardens.com goes live.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Ok, I was just confused about the reference to Gardens.com and thought I would take a look and then ended up back here. LOL

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Jeff!! I like Badseed's idea:

"I think we need to see Jeff not only in the DG shirt, but also on a tricycle with some sort of flower head dress." Go Jeff!!!!!!

It'll cheer us up, you know?

Harper

Harper,

Now 'that' is too funny!!!

LOL! ;-))

In general change is always difficult for people and unfortunately we often expect the worst rather than look for the best.
I hope people here wait and see before they decide it's going to be a turn for the worst.

As for the price increase, I think it's totally reasonable. For goodness sakes that's only a smidge over $2.00 a month.

¿ I think the big question is how did they manage to get the url www.gardens.com ?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I agree, that had to be a biggie or it was taken on years ago by our beloved in his infinite wisdom!!!

I love Badseed's idea!!!! How about it Jeff? LOL

Hebron, KY

Yeah!

How do 'they' have the name of gardens.com? This is 2007, you would think by now and/or
(definitely) before this, that would have been taken. It must have been 'bought' up by someone and/or some company long ago.

Enquiring minds want to know.........

Amelia Island, FL(Zone 9a)

C'mon Jeff! Be a sport!! Do it!! LOL!

Hebron, KY

Yeah Jeff!

It's always a fun time here!

Marilyn☺

"we want Jeff!, we want Jeff!, we want Jeff!.........."

LOL!

Apparently it used to belong to a gardening club in the San Francisco area. http://web.archive.org/ Type "www.gardens.com" into the "Wayback Machine." NameMedia buys and sells domain names, so they have an inside edge on some of the nice ones when they come available. :-)

DG has kept me company for several years now, it gave me respite each day for a few hours from taking care for 7/24 of my very ill husband while posting with some wonderful members. Today I am alone and still feel the same way about DG.

I would give up a lof things before I drop out of this site no matter what the cost may be.

Marylyn,

That raises an interesting question of just who controls this big wide world web.

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

Congratulations Dave, Terry and Trish and thanks for all you do. I'm glad that you are getting the backing you need to fulfill your dreams.

As gardeners we all know that change is inevitable and the only pain we feel is when we want things to stay the same. I'm looking forward to the new changes.

Indy, I think that's a topic for a different thread. LOL!

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

Marie! So good to "see" you. How's that Samson?

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Maria - we all lov you

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

First let me join in congragulating Dave, Trish & Terry. It must be great for you to feel the love & appreciation coming through the posts.
Good luck to you. I will continue to trust your word. $15 has been a huge bargain. (e.g. DG is worth more to me than any gardening magazine to which I've subscribed.)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

It is very gratifying - and humbling - to read these posts, and feel the sincere good wishes coming our way.

I'm pretty sure I can speak for Dave and Trish when I say we'll do everything within our power to live up to the trust you've placed in us, and I'm also certain we're all going to have a lot of fun getting to spend more time working in and among the community here, rather than dodging legal bullets and a few other mundane (but necessary) administrative chores and tasks ;o)

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

I say this somewhere on here at least once a week:

"I LOVE this PLACE !"

and I trust Dave and Trish and Terry to keep it for us.
Always said, Dave's garden, Dave's rules. and as long as that's not going to change we can continue to safely play in the garden.
Thanks Dave for all you do. And I hope you do get to play in the garden more often, all three of you.

I didn't post anything right away because I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Sincere congrats to Dave, Trish & Terry. As far as I'm concerned, any web site that has the benefit of Dave's input is one I'd like to see. DG is one of the best sites I've seen. And I am a systems analyst who works with purchased software for a living (used to be a programmer). Most of this stuff is thrown out there before it is done 'cooking'. I also think it's one of the best 'administrated' sites on the web. Things are kept rolling and disputes are dealt with quickly and fairly. It's also very personal, and in time, we might lose some of that, but that's almost inevitable. As far as a price increase, I believe it would have happened anyway. It's the best value on the web, anyway. I got my $15 worth the day I joined. And I renewed yesterday.

You guys are reaping what you sowed....and well deserved it is

I also want to say congrats Dave, Trish and Terry. I know that this is your child and trust you to continue watching over it, also if it frees you to post more that would be great.

I had just one question, I was wondering about the Garden Angel program, will it still be active and can we still contribute?

Thanks, Kathy

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I know what hasn't been said. You guys ROCK!! LOL

Hebron, KY

LOL! You said it Pepper! ;-))

Lots of great stuff here.

As for the gardens.com domain - Yes, NameMedia bought it from whoever the previous owner was. I do not know how much they paid for it but I sure appreciate having it to make a site with!!

Dave

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Been wanting to say it for awhile but figured someone would come up with it first. Guess not! LOL

Jeff, we're waiting......

I'm laughing as I imagine what Jeff is going to think when he comes in here and realizes what you are all demanding of him. I really don't think ya'll should get your hopes up. :) Maybe next time I'm in Boston, I'll bring a camera and some LLB flower heads. ;-)

dave

Hebron, KY

lol Pepper! .........and waiting........

Hebron, KY

Dave,

What are "....LLB flower heads"?

Marilyn

Love Lies Bleeding. That's what I was wearing in my Rasta Dave photo.

Something I don't quite understand, How can a company like Name Meda
make a profit from a site like Dave's without selling advertising.
Where does their profit come from?

All of this . com stuff is confusing.

I know alot of folks like google and Ebay got rich but their sites sell alot of ads.

I guess thats why their rich and I'm not.

Anyone have an idea?

Kathy, yes- we will certainly still be doing the Garden Angel program. Currently the fund is WELL funded, and we should not need to pad it for another year. We'll cross that bridge as we need to, but know that it is business as usual with that.

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

Wow. . .look what happens when you're "up to your neck" in your garden and don't look in on Dave's. . .immediately got suspicious when I saw that announcement from Dave. All I can say is 'YOU GO DAVE (and Terry and Trish)!!! It's NameMedia's gain and it's our gain too, a WIN-WIN situation! Congrats to all of you.

Janet

Paul,

We've touched on that question a few times but I don't think I've sat down and given a long definitive answer to it.

Look at imdb.com. Amazon.com owns that site outright. It pays for itself but is certainly not bringing Amazon heaps of profit. The primary benefits to Amazon are not financial but in other areas (who knows what).

Contrary to what a lot of people believe, it's not ALWAYS about the money (usually, yes, but not always).

Google, for example, will never recover the 1.6B they paid for YouTube. They expect to derive others benefits from YouTube that are not financial.

Same here. NameMedia wins here because they get the DG team and they know we will be able to develop additional websites for them. We're proving that with Gardens.com and we'll do it again with other sites in the future.

Dave

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think we need to let Jeff settle in and get used to us a bit before we start demanding silliness from him! Jeff, just take that request as a sign that you've been accepted as "family" here. :-)

Congratulations to Dave and Trish and Terry.... this is exciting!

I've been catching up on these threads, and I don't have a lot to add right now... But I did want to mention that NameMedia will probably still be able to get some advertising and publicity revenue from all the nonsubscribing members who can't block the ads... and that's a lot of "eyeballs." Oh, and I didn't realize I could block the ads, so I haven't bothered... but the only one that annoys me is on the Bulbs Forum, because its placement is such that I have to scroll down an entire page before I can see the actual threads on the forum (maybe I should just ask Dave if that can be fixed!).

I'm relieved that the copyright considerations aren't subject to change during this process and that privacy measures will remain. This does sound like a win-win proposition, and I'm looking forward to seeing the additional developments here and at the new site!

Will you continue to offer shorter term "trial" memberships? I often suggest them to members when I'm encouraging them to become subscribers for full access to all the forums etc., and I think it might help to continue offering them with the rate increase... it's easier to nudge somebody into a $5 plunge than into a $25 one... Together with the new site, I think continuing to offer trial memberships would be a good way to increase the subscriber base.

I'm looking forward to checking out garden.com!!
