Ah, Nancy, I saw your post and thought she didn't have mite, then got to gardengrams post :~((((( I feel bad for her too. I really hope she can get it under control and lets us know how she did it. I'm pretty sure she has Avid.

I think Jill said she will wait until it's warmer to treat as its not too good to use inside . Sad and lot's of work to get rid of them can take months of treating I've been told by some Hybridizers who got them . One told me took 4-5 months before they knew they were gone and safe to sahre/sell plants again and some of their favorite hybridized plants were lost :((
I know Jill said he Banna plant got Spider Mites. I've heard people say this happens often when these plants are brought in to warm dry heat humdity and weekly sparying and baths help some for Spider Mites anyways I've been told.
Good Luck Jill.
Me I'm not a pesticide person too afraid of neurological problems and more hazzards even when using pre-cautions. Sorry Av's you'd just all be trashed.

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Maureen. Actually, the bowl was probably $20 unpainted at Michael's. Mind you, this was about 9 yrs ago and I don't think Michael's carries the unfinished items anymore. Today, that bowl is $60 unpainted at one of the painting stores.

How about a picture of the plantstand in the background? : )

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Here ya go avpam. My DH & I built this a couple of months ago. I had planned on it being on a wall near my back door but didn't bother to measure the wall first and I made the shelf too big. So I had to put lights on it so my AVs would croak! I now need a bigger one!

Has Jill tried Neem Oil. It took care of the Mites on my Brugmansias.

Neem oil is effective in controlling more than 200 species of insects pests reported by various researchers around the world and no other plant or synthetic substance has such a diverse action on insects. Scientists after studying more than 200 plants exhibiting insecticidal propertiesreach the consensus that Neem is the most effective and environmental friendly cure for the insects anddiseases. At the same time no other tree has received as much attention as Neem in recent past. Its popularity is increasing day by day all over the world where people love to have alternatives to chemical/toxic pesticides. Many scientific institutions and agro industries are trying to make more effective pesticides formulation based on Neem.

Recipe: The recipe for using neem is : 1 Tlbsp of neem oil, a few drops of dish detergent and add enough warm water to make a liter. It needs to be used within 8 hours of mixing it up. As like all other sprays it needs to be used 3 times, 7 or less days apart. It does not eradicate bugs as fast as other heavy duty insecticides but for a small outbreak etc., Neem oil is effective.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

TARogers Thanks for info ! We all have used neem oil.
Sad but it does not kill nasty Cyclamen Mites can not be killed with neem oil . do a search on Av forum for lots of Cyclamen Mites . It's a long process of getting rid of them and their long life different stages.
Avid is the best to treat plants . You will need to sprayor dip plants at least three times, once every fourth day after the initial treatment. Be sure to that the spray reaches the crown and along the folds of any quilted or scalloped leaves. These are the areas where Cyclamen Mites tend to concentrate.
Jill does have Avid but she may wait until it's warmer out to to do outside.
