Television addicts... how about this one?

The TV can be very addictive, esp. some programs. Priorities alter when that happens. This is a picture I got from a cousin on e-mail. I think this was some picture of a family in the east-coast port city of Chennai taken last year during the floods of the rainy season. Here in many houses, the electric outlets are not closer to the floor but about 5 feet from it (by custom) on the walls. Lucky for them that power has not disrupted so that they can watch their favourite program on TV. Don't forget to have a look at the Lord of the House in the background and his natural expression! He is rendered completely helpless even in this situation!

Uhm. I guess having electricity running while their feet are in the water doesn't scare them.

I looked at that and wondered why they weren't all fried.

This is an insane picture. I am with you as to how they are all not electricuted.

Electric wiring here is, as I also observed, is much above the ground level, about 5 ft. to keep them out of reach of children. I mentioned that point because I have seen pix of homes where the outlets are close to the carpet level, which is not the case here, even in my home. So that is what could have saved them. They are safe that way

Dinu - what a thought-provoking picture -

LOL! That must be one gooood show! I don't think I'll ever feel guilt again for sitting down and watching tv. Although that is kind of funny, it's extremely horrible that they have that much water in their home!! :(

can you imagine those wet clothes against your skin...and dirty water at that...mercy. And yes, it is a thought provoking picture. Interesting in many ways.

Dedication to that program for sure!!

You know, floods affected most parts of that city last year and it was a hell of a time for them. We had one TV show, a serial in fact, (weekly twice for one hour each) running for 3 years. And it was so captivating to the audience that they felt involved in that story and never moved out or had any fixtures during that hour on the telecast dates. We have chosen not to have the cable network for the last 5 years (and we are happy without it) and so we don't know how the story went, but it was even a discussion topic in groups, gossip... and everywhere. It had become so popular because the director had chosen his story from real-life situations and the presentation was also good (have seen it a few times elsewhere). That captured the audience. My doctor (my friend) had one small TV fixed in his clinic (for that) and he once got irritated when patients visited him during that hour, when the story was at its 'peak'!! The addiction was to that extent. Fortunately, last year the serial found its natural end, much to others' relief. LOL.

It must be a fairly common occurance as they don't even seem interested in rescuing their belongings to higher ground.
Dinu is right that's addiction.

They would have done that already and relaxing, as they probably know the rains have stopped or the level would not rise. There were a few more pix that got circulated last year and I have not saved them - some were very interesting. Mind you, rains were very heavy last time round, in that part. It lashed, in fact. Here in our part, if there is a storm, they switch off the power at the grid itself until the storm goes off to prevent branches and trees that may fall on power lines.

Wow, it is amazing how addicted some people can be when it comes to their favorite TV show. I'm not too bad unless it is CSI Miami. Then I guess I would be called an addict too. But I just can't miss a single episode. I have to see what happens to Horatio. Isn't he just the coolest?

Thanks for sharing.

Certain serials on the telly, just pull you up, like a magnet. We have to try our best not to be iron particles. LOL. If we become so, then our other schedules will be jeopardised. Such shows will make the viewer a part of the story and that is the beauty of the 'direction' of the episodes. There are a few, only a few, who direct the stories well and they are the ones that put people into addiction.

Modern life is full of addictions. Could we voluntarily give up our fossil fuels, our power-this-and-that, our internet, radio, TV, etc.?

Reading..... this is one beautiful hobby. Don't you think the mind is getting lazy, while technology is growing fast? Do we prefer to pick up a book to sit back and read in lieu of the 'puter? Do we walk or use the bicycle for short errands even if we have time? Do we listen to the radio by choice?

Oh Dinu, LOL you have truly made me laugh with that photo! TY!

You absolutely explained in your first post why the pictured family was not at risk.

Isn't it funny how closely world-wide we all have become such addicts to media where it previously had no place or need in our lives?

My Grandmother who raised me had "her hour" Monday though Friday with her soap opera called "As the World Turns". We all had to get quiet and let her have that time shhhhh no cooking going on LOL

Now I get a bit lost as I do not watch TV and so my poor 13 year old

daughter is trying to stay with her peers and watch what everyone else does and she is like me and forgets to watch!

We love Youtube and that kind of keeps us, if not current, amused occasionally.

You can garden and listen to the radio! LOL

We love the radio though. Not the music- the stories by those who love the radio too.
