rooting jars / vases

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Aphids not good you may want to spray all your plants with safe soap. I think Neem oil with little blue dawn or ivory dish sopa together is good also.
We root woody stems either in straith Perlite, Vermiculaite, or mixture of both, or soil-less mix. I also like to ad and use Eleanor's VF-11 for rooting .

this is day 11 of my ivy rooting. :) i think i'll go out and get a pot tomorrow. :) actually i have some peat cups, i may separate them into 3, then when they have better roots get a large pot to hang in the window.
oh, so many options. :)
my other ones still aren't rooting. (some ivy i took from outside - now i'm thinking it was too woody)
my spear ivy has started to root in 2 spots. i have pics in my journal. stephanie (sjonesartist)

Loving this thread, who would have thought that this would be a thread, I am a glass container nut case!!!! I have so much glass I collect, jars from food, thrift stores, Wally world, garage sales. I love the little vases, or anything that makes one----since my grandchildren were born, I collect baby food jars, also a great root starting jar, especially the toddler size. Another place to find cute jars is a kitchen store, or the World of Bargains, or Garden Ridge. Actually anywhere is great!!!! I personally prefer finding them in my pantry and at garage sales. I also use them to start seeds, hard seeds like morning glories, ect. Also I have an old test tube holder with the test tubes, only two tubes left, but got some smaller ones and use them for seed starting(soaking overnight or a few days). If anyone knows where you can find some little bitty jars that are adorable, please let us all in the secret!!!!! And I think a jar exchange would be cool :)!!!!!! My two cents worth, great pictures and stories! Have a great night all!!!

Someone else mentioned test tubes and I was thinking about looking for them at a bar supply store. Since shooters have become such a big seller in the bars, you see girls walking around with racks of plastic test tubes. I'll have to check it out.

Moretz: That was a great deal! I love that green one too. I wish I could find a lot of colorful vases, jars or bottles .... all different colors - I would love to fill them with water, root cuttings and hang them all in the window to catch the light! I've always wanted to have one of those neat "bottle" trees too with colorful bottles!

What a haul, My first thought when I noticed the small jar with a lid was terrarium. Check out the terrarium forum. I have a large round terrarium jar that I still haven't had a chance to plant.

(Zone 1)

Here's a link for a site that lists a bunch of plants for terrariums ... since your jar is small, you will want something in the miniature range that won't grow real fast!

Love that little tea pot one.....

Brick, NJ(Zone 7a)

I'm going to pick up something like this and place my rooting jars on it, full of ivy, and never plant them, and keep them in the jars. (i hear they will live forever in just water) so we'll see.

Hi everyone, finally got back to this thread! Love all of those jars; here are some of mine. The center is an old holder with four vases that I use for roses, and the top where the green water jar is; for a big candle. My son informed me yesterday when he saw them that he saw the iron holder in a bar as a shot drink holders instead of vases, and there was a candle in the center-----------well creative it is I guess!!!! Anyway I put food coloring in the jars to help you see them better I hope. If not will retake later this week!!! Happy weekend!!!

Rose-Petalzz: Great find! Now, you need to take some cuttings from a bunch of plants and stick them in there to root ... Love that holder!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Great idea, Rose! What do you have growing in the test tubes?
:) Donna

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi, I have seeds soaking in them! Which I have to plant today in pots. I soak all my hard coated seeds, like coral vine, morning glories, bottlebrush, chinese fringetree, cannas, ect. It is cool to do that. I also use it for roses that I pick, it makes a different kind of holder for flower arrangements. Need to paint it though, all rusty! I love all of those bottles!!! Yes I am cutting my ivy and other plants to put in them. I love pickle jars too, and I use old coke, and pepsi, that is the one with the lid in the pictures. This is a neat forum, keep it going!!!! Lets see who can come up with the weirdest jar!!!!! And I think a jar exchange would be awesome!!! I even have a long stem glass in there too, can't see it too good. I love glass!
Keep this thread going, it is fun to see these creative ideas!!!!!! Has anyone seen the picture frame with the water reservoir in the back for fresh flowers in the picture frame, for live art? It was on smart gardening show!
I am going to look for that!!!! Have a great afternoon y'all!!!
Ruby

That is a neat way to start them in! I'll have to keep my eyes open for some.

A Jar Exchange! What a Great Idea!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey y'all the jar exchange is sjonesartist idea , way at the top, I just thought I would say yes to that!!! How does everyone else feel about that? Just one jar per exchange, so it wouldn't be expensive for us! Someone organize this, exchanging names that sign up and give us a couple of weeks to find something exciting for the exchange!!!
What do y'all think??

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

sounds fun

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I thought it was a good idea when it was first suggested. How would you go about running it? Just a name exchange? Everyone sending their jar directly to another person? Do we want to limit it to just jars or open it to anything that will hold water and plants? Other types of glassware, small vases, glasses? Has anyone ever done this before? I participated in the craft exchange, that was a lot of fun but we sent our items to one person and they then sent the items out to everybody. Extra shipping involved. Do we want everyone to send out just one jar to another person or if there are just say maybe 10 people would we send out 10 jars one to every person in the exchange???

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Just found this, and love all the jars, bottles and vases. Glad to know I'm not the only one to do this :-) Small wine carafes work great for larger cuttings.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I could part with one jar but not ten...

(Zone 1)

I agree with sallyg .... I don't think anyone has or wants to send 10 jars! I guess it could be done like the Secret African Violet Leaf Exchange a few of us are doing. I'm not the organizer of that, but did join in. We sent our info, DG name, address etc to one lady. She then got everyone's names together and sent each of us someone else's name to send our package to. And, when we send our package to that person, we put our name inside so they know who it came from. It stays a secret until we receive the package. Does that make sense? I think they limited that to a certain number of people too, but I don't remember how many it was.

Anyone have any other ideas how something like this would work? I'm a newbie here, so I'm not too sure.
