MUSIC Discussion

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I'd like to know what cd/record , tape or what have you, that you listen to (music wise) that you absolutely love.

I'm looking for a few new cd's to listen to. Here's the type of music I like. What do you like to listen too.

Maybe I can get a few ideas.

I love instrumental music that is upbeat, also soothing, but not fall asleep soothing. I"m always looking for more instrumental cd's

Not much into orchestra music or Jazz.

I have some kenny G that I really love.
I love Enya
frank mills (happy music) piano cd, it's wonderful .
I love celtic instrumental music
I have some roy orbeson celtic and regular cd's
elton john
phil collins
I have some indian type flute music that is relaxing, called inka wayra
I have the Titanic cd
beatles
I have a couple of cd's that are dulcimer music

And who doesn't love Creedence clear water revival and electric light orchestra LOL

The ones I listen to the most are kenny G and frank mills.

Tell me some of your music and your faves. What you want to buy but haven't bought yet.

kathy_ann

Include if you can the title of the cd and who it was written by in case I want to go searching for it !!!!!

I would say that 99.9% of my listening is done online. I listen to internet radio, and to real.com's Rhapsody, which I highly recommend. They offer now more than 3,000,000 (yes, that's THREE MILLION) tracks of every genre of music there is. You can create your own playlists, and even share your musical tastes with others. For around ten dollars a month, I find Rhapsody a must-have. I listen to music almost constantly while on the computer. Check it out if you're not already familiar with it. You won't be disappointed.
I do like your tastes in music, kathy. Mine are very similar, but I will throw in classical and world. And, yes, Rhapsody has Kenny G and Frank Mills, but not all of Frank's music. My favorite Franks Mills song is Rocky Mountain Sunrise, but, unfortunately, Rhapsody does not offer it, yet.
Happy listening!

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

A good internet radio site you might enjoy is hober. You need realplayer, but there's no commercials, and they do a live show once a week.

http://hober.com/

One of my favorite 'albums' in years is The Chieftains' 'Down the Old Plank Road' There was a second album,"Further down the Old Plank Road". Allison Krauss, lots of greats on these two.

A newer favorite is Hayseed Dixie, incredible bluegrassers who cover AC DC songs, Motorhead, Kiss, etc., all on giutar, banjo, and mandolin. Not for everyone, but worth checking out

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Well, I am on the internet alot, I find myself turning off the volume LOL. I sew for a living and sit down in the sewing room and don't bring the computer back there (laptop) . Can't hear a sterio because i'm sewing constantly. Which makes the headphones and cd's amust for me. Which is why i'm on the hunt for new music to listen to.

Sounds like a neat thing that rhapsody music. But truly not for me.

I don't have that song from frank mills, I must find it though, as I truly love his music

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

You don't happen to know what cd that song is on do you? rocky mountain sunset?

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

Hi kathy, unfortunately I don't think the original album that Rocky Mountain Sunrise was on is available anymore. I burned my fave Mills tunes to my own disc a few years ago and gave the originals to a relative. I went to frankmills.com and the first album he has listed, and it's available thru his site, is a live album and the first track is the song in question. You may want to visit his site. Hope this helps!

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

Another suggestion for great music, since you don't listen online, is the European orchestra Rondo Veneziano. I own about 15 of their discs and if you like upbeat, VERY melodious, orchestral music you won't go wrong. All of the songs were written by their conductor and founder and I fell in love with RV the first time I heard them. They produced about 20 albums thru the 80's and into the 90's but haven't done much lately. They are immensely popular in Europe but little known this side of the puddle. Their music is available on Amazon.com and quite often you'll find a disc of their's on eBay.
Another suggestion, and again he's European, German in fact, is James Last. His music and his orchestra have been a pop mainstay for 40 plus years, and popular here in the States. Again you can find him on amazon or eBay.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I did find it, it's also on a cd called "Traveler" which I can't find anywhere LOL I have several of his cd's but can't seem to find his Frank Mills Live cd which has that song on it as well. I'll head to that web site and check it out. Thanks

Hope I hear from some others too as to what your favorite music is.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Hey, thanks for those other suggestions,

YOu know, I forgot I recently got the trilogy of transiberian orchastra, it's their christmas trilogy but I listen to it all the time . I'll go check out those two you mentioned.

Hi kathy,

If you're looking for whole CDs and you like Kenny G and Frank Mills, I bet you'd like:
John Tesh - One World
It's very uplifting with different flavours from around the world including celtic, native American, flamenco even. Yep, he's the guy that used to be on Entertainment Tonight, but he composes and plays a mean piano!

I pretty much listen only to Mana, Los Super Seven, Santana and other Hispanic music. I don't speak Spanish but find this music fascinating due to their fabulous voices and musical expertise. Great musicians.

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

If you like pleasant, easy listening Hispanic music, try Raul di Blasio. He is a very popular pianist in Latin-speaking countries. He was born in Argentina. I listen to his music on Rhapsody. You can find his cd's on amazon and eBay.

Kathy Ann I'll have to ask the DH the name but he listens to a CD that has cellos and another string playing modern rock (heavy rock) and it sounds great, and I don't like hard rock!

I download a lot at Itunes and also used alltunes via russia until they changed to mastercard (I only have visa and AmEX) but it was a great site and very cheap.

Saint

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

OH wow Saint, sounds like my kind of music, will look forward to hearing from you.

I bought a couple cds now that siskyou told me about and they are fantastic.

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

http://www.apocalyptica.com/home/

here is the link to the group...Amazon has them so you should be able to listen. He says the best is the first where they play metallica.

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

siskiyou, I had a listen to Raul di Blasio and I liked his music. Thanks for the suggestion!

aranesss, I just discovered Apocalyptica last year. They have such a unique sound and the music is so energetic (my fav is Drive) that I'm tired after listening to a few songs (a good tired, though!)

kathy, if you like cello, you might like Sacred Spirit:Chants And Dances Of The Native Americans
. Here it is on Amazon if the link works: http://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Spirit-Chants-Dances-Americans/dp/B000009CIO/sr=1-1/qid=1168993099/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-8695507-7518868?ie=UTF8&s=music
My favs are track #7 and track #5. There is a Sacred Spirit Vol.2 as well, which I love too.

A great site for internet radio is pandora.com. For example, type in Kris Kristofferson and they create a radio station of his music and others in the same style or genre. If you create stations of several of your favorites you can then choose the "Quick Mix" option and hear cuts from all of your stations. My personal stations are John Hiatt, Bruce Cockburn, Shawn Colvin, Greg Brown, Dave Alvin, Cheryl Wheeler Kris Kristofferson and Carrie Newcomer. Pandora is quick, easy and free. There are no advertisments or ads. It's a great way to hear your favorites and catch other artists you may have never heard of. I often have it playing while I wander through Dave's Garden.

Kathy, you mean you don't have Queens. I am 51 and love Queens and my son who is 26 also loves Queens. I know you know their music "We will, we will rock you", "We are the Champions", "Another one bites the Dust", "Somebody to Love", "You're my best friend", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "A crazy little thing called Love". Just a few. I usually listen to CD's but I am learning how to use an Ipod, (burning CD's to Ipod). I also love Enya, The Point, Bette Midler, Jim Croche, Barbara Striesand, Kenny G, Anne Murray, Chery Crowe, Jimmie Buffett, James Taylor, Neil Diamond,Manheinmer Steamroller Express and to sleep with Thunderstorms.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I like lots of different types of music - love a lot of what many of you have listed.
Claypa...I'm going to have to check out 'Hayseed Dixie'....sounds like something both DH and I would like!

Not exclusively 'instrumental', but have any of you ever heard 'Celtic Woman'?

They were on PBS in December, and my 8 y.o. daughter was mesmerized....she wants the CD and the DVD.

Their website links to Amazon.com, where you can hear clips.

http://www.celticwoman.com/index.asp

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

Yes, Nan, the latest Celtic Woman concert was awesome! Their first one was, too. Beautiful voices.

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

Not a big fan of the blind Italian, Andrea Bocelli. For male vocalists, I like Patrizio Buanne, Michael Buble', and Russell Watson. Il Divo is an awesome male vocal quartet, and Amici Forever, a quintet of three men and two ladies, are also great. I can go on and on and on....

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

oh I love michael buble.

Hey Nan, which one of the celtic woman cd's wouldyou recomend being the best one.

Bolivar, TN(Zone 7a)

Anything by Sara Brightman. Voice of an angel.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I wasn't able to listen to any of celtic woman's music on amazon.com . that happens sometimes, not sure why

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Personally, I'd buy the newest one of the performance at Slane Castle....that's the one we watched on PBS....it was great, really....everyone in the family enjoyed it, but especially 8 y.o. DD!!

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

LC2sgarden, I love Sarah Brightman, too! Have been a big fan since I first heard her.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Here you go, Kathy....you can listen/watch a few on their website.

http://www.celticwoman.com/viewSection.asp?idSection=189&id=multimedia

Prineville, OR(Zone 6a)

You also need to check out YouTube. Many of the artists already mentioned here are well represented in music videos there. There are several Celtic Woman vids as well. And it's free to sign up.

Lilesville, NC(Zone 7b)

kathy,

My hubby has made a suggestion based on your initial selections.

He said to try Vangelis - known best for the blade runner soundtrack
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vangelis for some more albums
Jean-michel jarre - the revolutions album

if you want to try something daring - kitaro - the silk road compilations

also - if you like piano, but not orchestra, any piano sonata by mozart - and the moonlight sonatas by beethoven.

he listens to a wide-wide-wide variety of music, and I can't help sometimes humming something that he has recently played, over and over again.

Me, I'm just a country music gal myself - unless I am stuck in the car while he chooses the music.

Char

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Wow Char, thanks so much. I"ll check out those selections for sure

kathy

This has been a good thread

Lilesville, NC(Zone 7b)

Kathy,

I will admit, i listen to country music like 98% of the time..however like i said when we are together in the car he listens to his music and i catch myself singing along or humming....There is a song he listens to called "tainted love" , i don't recall who it is by, but very addicting..along with some others he listens to. I don't want him to know i like them cause he will listen to them all the time and then i won't be able to listen to my country ever again...lol

Have a good day,

Char

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL, I hear you Char. I've heard of that song too.

Lilesville, NC(Zone 7b)

Kathy,

This is a remix by a band called Milk Inc. a Belgain dance duo. I have heard the originally and really don't care for it.
I will think of some more music he listens to and post it.

Char
