Hello we have just about completed our dream garden on the Isle of Lewis , Scotland, we are growing many tropical palms over the past few years, flowers and tropical friuts, also many species of bamboo, from seed, i love the challenge of growing here on the isle of Lewis Scotland, i am retired and disabled and my daughter cares for me, we have an acre garden, that only 9 years ago was rush moor land, and we have both rebuilt the derelict cottage that we now live in, we were always told that we could never have a garden here as the weather is to inclement, but like all gardeners, when people say that you cannot do it you have to prove them wrong, we are trying to make a tropical garden, as the island is on the gulf stream, we have very little frost if any, and i think the soil will be perfect for growing brugs, we went over to a show on the mainland a while ago and seen these most beautiful flowers and the perfume was incredible, and the size of the of he flowers are, well wow!
We open the garden for charities and we have now decided to try and get a large collection of brugmansia, so could anybody please help us and advise us about the growing of this beautiful, plant, and were i might be able to get them, or the seeds, i know that they do not come true from seed, and that they a very poisonous, but then again many garden plants are, from a totally obsessed brugmansia would be gardener, hoping someone will help me with this subject, where better than to come to this forum to find out about brugs, we are trying to start some seeds today,we are like 2 little boy and girl in a sweet shop, over brugs, will let you know how our seedlings come on,so keep your fingers crossed for us, we have two large green houses and a conservatory so we have plenty of room for these beauty's, a link below to our threads that we have on dg.

Sorry i have not been on very much lately, i have not forgot you lovely people., but i have not been so good in my health, got an operation looming up on a week come Monday, which i'm dreading, it will put me out out of action for some time, i'm really not looking forward to it, as it has come right in the middle of my seed planting time, but i'm trying to do as much as i can before i go into hospital, got the heaters and the lights in the greenhouses going and the propagators, but i'm lucky, i have a good second in command to take my place and look after the plants, Mary-Anne, i don't know what i would do without her.i have also ordered a large 12ft x 20 ft Polytunnel as my greenhouses are full to the brim, and we are going to need somewhere for my brugs, datura and all of the other tropical plant collections i'm growing, i'm always open for any advice and tips on growing tropical plants, we are also planning to grow a large variety of musa banana's, we feel like a couple of kids in a sweet factory, a bit disappointed in this operation turning up now though, i cannot see anybody being able to keep me in bed for long, when the garden and new brug collection will be calling me, lol lol he,he hee, i can'y wait to get going with the brugs and datura!
Janett my lady friend, brought be some brug cuttings from Sweden, so i'm going to blame her for my brumania, when she came across, also some Canna's,and a nice collection of seeds, she is a wonderful lady, she is hoping to come across next weekend from Sweden, she thinks i have gone crazy, because i have just bought 18, large brug plants, all of different varieties, and probably around 300 brugmansia and datura seeds, as i have said in my threads, i'm definitely going to make a tropical garden on this Island, as everybody here says it cannot be done., i have bought 6 giant elephant ear plants, also 6 cycad seeds, and ginko, the golden ones, they are said to be 2 million years old, the palm trees and the bamboo's that i planted 2 years ago are ready to be planted in the spring, i think that we have around 40 of several varieties, we have also bought many types of tropical seeds, and have had a few lovely donations of my friends on daves garden, i think it is really nice that they should do that. I would like to take this opportunity to say thankyou to Dave's garden and all of its lovely members for there kindness and lovely comments and encouragement that they have given Mary-Anne and myself, i really think that you are all very nice people, god bless you all, from Peter and Mary-Anne on the Isle of Lewis.
Look forward to hearing from you. This is just a picture of some of the collection of brug and datura plants i have just bought and alot more seeds, i'm going to make a comprehensive collection, to go in the new poly tunnel i'm buying, i think i'm in serious trouble, do you think i've caught the brug and datura bug, lol, kind regards Peter, from the little Island across the pond.
Pete, I am so sorry to hear that you are going to have to have surgery. I went through the same thing last summer. I had to have surgery on my hand the beginning of July, which really made my summer gardening hard. Fortunately I was able to get all my seedlings in the ground before the surgery, or I wouldn't have had anything flowering last summer. Don't try to push yourself to soon, I did, and am still having pain in my hand because I didn't take it as easy as I was suppose too.
Patricia
Thank you Patricia, for your concern, i will take your advise and try to take it easy as Mary -Anne will tell you, i'm stubborn it is to have a lump removed, from my lower abdomen, i used to be an asbestos stripper in the old days, and these darn things always worry me sick, but i'm strong in spirit and in mind, and i will bounce back, very soon, you take care of yourself.
Hope that you are keeping well god bless from the two of us, Peter and Mary-Anne
Wow, Pete, I'd say you've been bitten badly by the Brugmansia and Datura bugs. LOL Now you're in with the rest of us Brug and Datura lovers. Best of luck with your surgery. Thoughts and prayers are being sent your way for a quick and complete recovery. Ada
Thanyou for your kind words and lovely comments Ada, i have won may prizes for my garden and growing plants, but i'm totally stunned by how beautiful brugs and datura look, and the size of there flowers, i have always been interested in cross pollination and grafting, and will enjoy the experience of growing them, it is really nice to share an interest with people so far away, especially nice people like yourself, we are also going to try growing them from seed, it should be interesting to see the different variations from the parent plants, i'm very interested in trying cross pollination, by isolating the plants when they are in full bloom, just to see what i can come up with, or should i say mother nature come up with, my daughter Mary -Anne is just as bad as me over them, every time she sees a new plant she says , have you seen this one dad, sadly today, not enough people lift there eyes to see the beauty that nature hands us, we live in a beautiful world, if some people would only look, i'm sure you would agree.
You take care of yourself, look forward to hearing from you again. Kindest regards from Peter and Mary -Anne, god bless from us both on the little Island across the pond, i must admit i cannot wait for my seeds to germinate and the new plants to arrive, lol .
This is just a little bit of our front garden, can you imagine the brugs/datura scattered amongst here, i am going to plant them in large square planters so that we can move them in the winter months.
An invitation for advice on growing brugs any tips and information would be very welcome, kindest regards to all on the brug forums
Beautiful front garden, Pete. It's great that your daughter shares your love for plants. You'll love the anticipation of growing Brugmansia seeds and seeing what blooms they produce. When you cross pollinate the blooms, tie or tape the blooms shut so the bees and moths can't contaminte your cross. We're looking forward to seeing some of your crosses from your pollinations in the future.
how cold does it get? Paul
Ada, thanks very much for your good advice, very much appreciate it, hope that you are keeping well, and the weather is good for you.we have had terrible storms over here, and by the sounds of the weather forecast, there is more to come, but it is very mild for the time of year, god bless, kind regards, Peter, Mary-Anne
Paul, we are lucky as we rarely get frost, as the Island is on the gulf stream, we get alot milder weather than the UK mainland, i am trying to get some of the council officials over here to help me try to start an Eden project over here, so far with no luck, but am going to keep on trying, if it can work on the mainland Uk, and bring many visitors from all over the world to see it, it would definitely work here, and it would help the economy of the Island, but they think that the idea is to progressive, kind regards Peter, Mary-Anne.
Pete, the weather is weird everywhere. We had been having warm temperatures during the day but we have a cold front coming in that will definately change the temperatures.
We have got our first baby brugs on the way!! from seed, Thanks to Diana, some others that we are germinating now, we cannot wait to see what they will turn out to be, we have also got some mixed brugs that are on there way to, we have no idea what they were crossed with, as they were just bought as mixed, but they are on there way, they are baby's, we are really excited and pleased, totally new to brugs. we also got some brug seeds from Patricia, yours are in the propagator now, cannot wait for the baby's coming, i have labeled them as instructed, its better than winning the lottery, you just do not know what you are going to get, we will keep you informed of there progress, i have also been buying some brug plants.
BUGMANSIA, Versicolor yellow, rosea soft pink, suaveolens- white, sanguinea red, varigarta, suavolens double white. and that's just a start, we are both blown away by the colors and the varieties, and there size.
We are looking all over to purchase more seeds, we have managed to get some lochroma australis, the miniature blue one, we have been following your threads on dg and following the growing advice on bugs, like a couple of kids in a sweet factory, many thanks to you all, i guess we have the brug bug!! WOW! Peter and Mary-Anne

Aloha Peter and Mary-Ann from the island of Maui! I have been following your posting with great interest as my Step-dad's family all came from the Isle of Lewis, the Mcleod-Smith clan. Although he passed away a few years ago, he always enjoyed going to the island to visit family. Best of luck with your Eden project, sounds like a wonderful idea!
If you decide to get into other tropicals such as gingers, let me know - I can sent you some from over here (another little island TWO ponds away!)
Jenny

Wow, they are all happy looking little plants! You will have big bloomers in no time, what a job!
And you keep them all labeled, good for you! I have lost a few labels here and there, and it was impossible to tell what they were later!
Christie
