I bought 2 under the counter lights at wallmart a few days ago, for 7 dollars a piece. They were the same wattage as the other lights that were twice the price. They are keeping my greenhouse nice and toasty, I see no difference between the "grow lights" I have and the cheap ones. The plants are the same under either.

Where are the inexpensive grow lights?
I have one of the metal baker's racks-I have 2 light fixures (4 bulbs total on each shelf)-is that how most folks do it for starting seeds? I took mine apart a couple of years ago and am just now putting it back together this week.

DMurray;
That's how I'm doing it. Right now I have one shelf with a bottom heater,
( just a rope light under kitty litter) It is holding the temp in the flats right at 80 degrees. The lights are within an inch of the cover on the starter flats. My stand is a metal chrome plated utility stand. Two of the other shelves are filled with plants already started. Another shelf has some sweet potatoes sprouting. I am about ready to start some of the sprouts to root.

Thanks, Russ. I'm going to go get some new heat mats this week then will be starting some tomato seeds to begin with. The rope light/kitty litter idea is a good one-I may have to give that a try. The heat mats are pretty pricey. Do you have problems with the kitty litter getting mooshy when it gets wet? I suppose perlite would work well, too.
Thanks for the ideas!

Deb; So far I haven't spilled water on the kitty litter. I believe it would though, as this is the same baked clay as what is used as oil dry by mechanics. It is cheaper than kitty litter. First is the construction of a box to hold the rope light and the baked clay. I used 1X2" strips cut them into lengths that would fit inbetween the poles of my 4' by 2" shelving. then cut a piece of hard board or masonite to a width of 2' and a length of45.5". I nailed the masonite to the frame and used the plastic wiring retainers to hold the rope light in place with the rope running back and forth, end to end of the box. I then filled the 2" deep box with the oil dry ( kitty litter ) to cover the rope light.
I will try find the pictures. " The Box
The rope light in the box. One end of this rope don't light up, the manufacture says it can be used that way or replace the whole rope light. This rope is a 12' rope.
I chose to go ahead and use it that way. Then of course after filling the box. I leveled out the oil dry, and placed the starting flats on the oil dry.
The 80 degree temp has germinated the tomato and pepper seeds in near record time. Keep the lights down as close to the new plants as possible, at least within 2".
Wow, thanks! I'll give this a try-the heat mats are 70+ dollars. I'm pretty sure the rope light would be much less!
