A pair of Mallards in my garden, albino female or did she escape from the farm yard?

Another pair of mallards in my garden. The female is very dark, but it appears they hybridise.

Hi Wallaby,

Quoting:
A pair of Mallards in my garden, albino female or did she escape from the farm yard?

Farm escape, probably an Aylesbury breed - they're very common. They're actually both drakes (yellow bill; females have a mottled darker brown bill).

Well she/he sure did look like it fancied the male! They stayed together as a pair, the white one waited while the other one went for a little walk, they looked very happy together!

Thanks for the info Resin, it did look like a farm yard one, strange they should be friends. I'm pleased it escaped!

Look, it waited, then they went together.

Great pics! I love Ducks!

Hi Wallaby,

From the link you posted . . . .

Quoting:
In some cases, as many as 19% of pairs in a Mallard population are male-male homosexual (Bagemihl 1999).

Well that could explain it Resin! I looked at some of it, didn't get that far. I wonder if there is a lack of females so they go with what there is.

For you pelletory, as they waddled off together! What a quack up!

wallaby, you have a *very* pretty yard. :D

Thanks magpied, the bed on the right was only just beginning.

I had a pair of sparrows that I really thought were something else for a start, the male was flitting through the branches of a rhododendron more like a wren would. It had a very large pure white patch on its chest, with noticeable white bands on it's wing edges. The female was there too with nest material in her beak, she was more strongly coloured than most. We don't have many sparrows, they are in decline here supposedly, not as many people have chickens perhaps. (I post this heart in mouth, but we can't ignore them!)

I took it from a window and couldn't get it showing much breast, but you can just see the bright white and on it's wing.

Thats different! Thanks for posting it. Please take your heart out of your mouth now (yuk, lol).

Thanks for the extra Duckies!

I may as well post the female too! She does have stronger markings, the fawn line going from the eye was very noticeable, I wonder if they came from somewhere else. There is a Greenfinch I think as well in the pic to the left, which I hadn't seen when I took the pic. It's not the best of pics, from an upstairs window.

My heart is back in place (for) now.

I see two House Sparrows, but no Greenfinch!

You're probably better at recognising it than I am Resin, I had greenfinches around too and the beak looked different, the top of the head and wings looked sort of like a female finch. Not good enough for me to recognise.

duckmother, I guess you have ducks? They are so lovable and sweet looking!

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I rehab ducks, wallaby. Mostly, baby Amercian Wood Ducks but I will take just about any injured or abandoned duck. The wild ducks are raised and released. The domestics ducks are raised and hopefully, I will find a farm or home for them. I have had several domestics as pets but do not have any ducks at the moment. I should start getting Woodies in late March or April. When I get them they are usually about 24 hours old and 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. Many times their Mom was hit by a car or they have been seperated and since Wood duck females do not quack, people think that Mom has left and then the well meaning people, scoop them up, take them home and call for rehab. We live on a lake, so, they don't go very far from home. In winter, they migrate about 3 miles and then will return to the lake, in the spring

Outstanding pic duck!! Those are such beautys!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I can't believe the colouring on that duck, it doesn't look real! There's something about ducks that make you want to mother them. I had a very newly hatched mallard duckling running around cheeping like mad, mother nowhere in sight, it must have been left behind or got lost somehow. I contaceted the RSPCA and they came and took it to a sanctuary to be with other lost ducklings. It had already adopted me, snuggled in to me and went to sleep with a little twittering noise. I felt so sorry for it, the person that took it put it in a huge cardboard box, it must have been scared but best for it in the long run. I could have so easily kept it!

You must feel good to see all your ducks come back to your lake, do they come to you when they return?

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Pell, I agree they are beauties. lol

Wallaby, I am glad that you got to experience a baby duck, even if for only a short time. I have had 13 or so ducks snuggled up next to me before. Once they think of me as Mom, I am...until they leave home.

The female is more drab, of course, with a white tear drop shape around her eyes. I visit them everyday (even during the winter just in case some fly home, for a snack) and the newly released ducks will jump or fly out of the water, to eat with Mom (and Dad). They will hop up in our laps, eat, snuggle and stay with us for long periods of time, unless another person approaches and then it is back to the water. But, after 2 - 3 weeks, they will not get out of the water anymore. Afterwards, all of them will get close to us but stay in the water. Over the years, I have learned how to call just like a female (a squeal like whistle not a quack) so, in the spring, when they return home, I will call and about 15 females will return a call. Then here they come for food. Wow! What a sight.

Here are a few older babies just hanging out with Mom

Aw how sweet! One experience of having baby ducks with me and I'm sure I wouldn't want to stop having them.
Nice pic duckmother!

One happy family! What would the world do without duckmothers? It is good to know they can go back to living a normal life though.

pelletory I bet you didn't think you would end up with a lot of duck stories!

Heres another female finch who has this white coloring.
