Getting Rid of Mold Stains

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

My dd just returned to college this afternoon. They told all the kids living in the dorms to turn off their refrigerators, but didn't tell them to keep the doors open. Needless to say, they all had tons of mold in them when they came back today. My dd cleaned out the fridge with paper towels and Clorox wipes, but says she has lots of stains left. Is there any way to remove the stains? The fridge is turned on now, so it is cold. I have no idea what to tell her. Help?

Hi Carmen,

I would first try Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. If that did not work,
I would spray a bit of Clorox Clean-Up on the surface and let it soak
in for a while. This product is usually pretty good at removing stains
you thought were permanent that other products cannot remove.

What a bummer. You would think the college would have sense enough
to advise the kids to leave the doors open or at least put baking soda in
there.

Best of luck in removing the stains.

Get some of the bleach gel stuff that they make to clean toilets or the scrub kind. It clings to the sides. After applying it put white paper towels in, sort of wallpapering the fridge. Then let the paper towels sit. Then clean out.

On the upside, if you've used bleach all over the stains themselves are probably just cosmetic. Bleach is very effective.

TriSodiumPhosphate (TSP), sold in the laundry section
and hardware stores. Works wonders.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will copy them and email them right to her.

ACK! Just one warning..

If using any kind of bleach (Chlorox sprays, toilet gel cleaner, etc), get it out of there as close to 100% gone as you can before using any other cleaners!! Bleach doesn't mix well with most other household cleaners... give off one nasty odor that would probably float all through the dorm & make some unhappy building-mates.

Thanks for the warning. I"ll send it to her, too. I don't think she would ever be in violation for using too many cleaners, but I don't know about her roommate. lol

It's the combination of them that concerns me. I put bleach in a toilet once, forgot it was there, and added toilet gel cleaner on top... Oh gosh the smell was consuming.. had to open a window & put a fan on...

BLECH

Um, just to clarify, it's not just a nasty odor. Mixing bleach with amonia-based products produces a gas that will kill you. Not to be done under any circumstances.
