Another of Americas' favorite birds

Melbourne, FL

My favorite, not only for it's nice color, but also for it's great personality. Let's see your shots of the Blue Jays.

beautiful pics. I can't top those.
I have a jay or two hanging out this year. I thought I was hearing a hawk, but recently saw that it was the blue jay . joke on me.

Just wondering .... what is the difference between a Blue Jay and a Scrub Jay?

Melbourne, FL

Florida Scrub Jay is only found in central Florida. Personally I have only seen a few, none around my house....although my Uncle had some that would take peanuts out of his hand when he lived in Indialantic a few years ago. Here is a pic I found, not mine.

this is one of my most favorite pics. Although I think BlueJays are a pain in the rear. They fly in screaming and scare all the other birds away grrrrrrr

That's just part of their lively personality.....nice shot! I have always supplied my Jays with peanuts and have seen them pick up and "weigh" each one to find the heaviest one to fly off with. I played kind of a mean joke on them one day several years ago. I opened several peanuts, emptied them and then glued the shells back together...then I placed the peanuts in their usual location. What a riot watching the Jays pick up and throw down these peanuts....they were hopping mad!!!

What I want to know is 'what did we do wrong out here in the Pacific Northwest that we don't get those gorgeous Cardinals and Blue Jays?' They're incredibly beautiful, both species.

We do get Stellar's Jays out here - not as pretty, but do the same screaming thing and I get a huge kick out of them!!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

We get alot of scrub jays out this way as well....though this particular species is native to the southwest... :)

What did we do wrong that we have no crows in Phoenix? lol

Here's a pic... but I am definitely cheating!

Murmur, I love the Stellars Jay. Do you have any pics?

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

Wonderful photos!! I love blue jays too. I think of them as the neighborhood avian police force. They are always keeping an eye out for predators and are usually the first ones to give a loud warning and drive said predator away. I could swear I heard one giving my neighbor's cat the miranda rights after pecking it on the head last summer lol. Here's one checking out a "perp" right now...

So ... basically .. the scrubs jays just aren't as colorful?

When we were in the early stages of trying to build our home years ago, we almost had an issue because the scrubs jays are protected here. They thought that our property had nesting scrub jays on it. Luckily for us, it was the lot next to us, so we were able to build our home. I have never seen what would look like a scrub jay. Even though they were supposed to be right next to us in the other lot, I think all the noise and activity while our home was being built .... scared them off. We do get lots of blue jays and cardinals here and also woodpeckers. All of those birds are very colorful and you know what they are even when they just fly by!

Great photos everyone! :-)

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Donna, that is really a cute picture - it looks so innocent! When I put peanuts out for the squirrels, all of a sudden about 10 bluejays will fly in and grab them all. I have a feeder that the squirrels can get into, but not birds, and it sure makes the BJ's mad when I put the peanuts in there!

Hebron, KY

The Blue Jays 'found' the new peanut feeder and have been 'going to town' on it! ;-))

They also love to swoop down and grab all the peanuts I have in the mixed seed on the ground.
