Guess what baby is this?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

We have plenty of them around. I found it lying in the house, fallen from a hole. Ants were already at it. It was alive and moving a bit. It must have been born 2-3 days or so ago in my guess. Can you guess what this is, first?

The little stick you see there is held by my DD who is trying to remove the ants from it. She tried to save it, but then after an hour it had sadly perished, probably to the shock and also the painful bites from this little creatures. Why, even the elephant dreads the ant!

An ordinary mouse?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Not a baby mongoose. Mongooses don't nest in tiled roofs!

I hope it's not a puppy.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

With the size of it's nails, I'd say it is indeed a digger.

A mole or a vole, perhaps?

I had no idea what this thread was about, figuring it was
a baby picture of one of our members, I confess, I skipped
it many times. Hope you find out what they are and what is
causing the death of so many of them.

wild dog?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Well, it's time to say what it is.

Wuvie, we all skip threads if the titles do not catch our full attention. It has happened to me many times as well and so I consider it normal.

In fact, kooger and GardenGlory hit the nail on its head. I don't know how they could tell so easily. I welcome them back to do a bit of 'explaining'! The squirrels have been living in and around our old tiled house - since time immemorial - and this location, just under the tiled roof there is a hole where they have been nesting since recent years (in my observation). It enters the house through another hole on the opposite wall just beneath a rafter. The family seems to be happy there and I have not prevented it from occupying the hole. It has not done any damage anywhere not does it seem to defaecate in there. It just comes there in the evening (silently), sleeps and goes away in the morning. It makes no sounds to disturb. I have seen them collect fibre from coconut shells to make their nest. It has also been seen collecting some disposed cotton by rolling it into its mouth to carry into its nest , not in that hole inside our home, but in another 'address' outside the house.

I hope the guessing game was more enjoyable than my other threads!

I think it is a baby rodent of some sort...

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

It was a guess, Dinu, based on what you wrote and my experiences growing up on a farm. We tried to save some baby squirrels that had fallen out of a nest somewhere high up in the hay barn when I was a child. We never found the nest to try put them back, so then we tried to feed them milk but all three died. I think it takes a trained animal person with the right equipment to be able to save a little one that small. Good of your DD to have tried though, shows you raised her well. :)

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Thanks kooger. So, even though it was a guess, you had seen it before! That one was too young perhaps to withstand the shock of a fall from about 10 ft. and then get bitten by ants. My DD took it inside after the ants were removed and made a little bed of cottonwool and put a piece of cloth to cover its body. But then it was all in vain. :( We will have one squeaker less this summer.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

....surprising that it survived the fall, don't you think?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I thought it was a squirrel -- I thought you'd posted and said it wasn't. I need to read more carefully!

Dinu,
All your posts are most interesting to us not world travelers. We get geography & history lessens every day from you & others that post pictures of their country's. Keep up the good work!
Thank-you,

I wouldn't have guessed that there are squirrels in India.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Glad you solved the mystery. Squirrels. Hmm.

My parents recently moved to Oklahoma from
New Mexico, so they found the squirrels to be
sweet little woodland creatures. Hubby and I were
glad they were delighted, but wondered how long
it would take for them to go from "Aww" to "Ugh".

Sure enough, those little buggers have traveled from
being fed and pampered to my father considering a
B.B. gun.

I think they are adorable as can be, but they are one
naughty critter.

:-)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Nah, they're not naughty...They're just being squirrels. We've invaded their turf! LOL Okay, but that doesn't mean I didn't buy the hot pepper flavored suet cakes tonight so the squirrels won't mess with them. No sir. ;)

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Mom reports they have dissected a floral display on the porch,
knocked over numerous items and stole a fake apple. LOL.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Those little creatures also have a sense of humour, eh?

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

dinu - i would still be careful about anyting going into the roof of your house. one never knows what kind of bugs they may carry with them. i would fix the holes right away.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Ah, this is a point I did not consider. I'll try to close the door for it outside and Nature will force it to look for another abode. Thanks for the point.
