vossner, i relate to your sentiments as i am in 8b and it is fussy about wind and shade and hot and freeze and watering times and calcium, all of which I have.

Beaker, the Fujimusume is breathtaking - the blue is so beautiful it almost brought tears to my eyes. I most definitely need to look for that one. I'm also a huge fan of blue petunias!

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

The Fuji came from Silver Star - She sends HUGE plants - Very happy with everything I've gotten there.

Hey Nery, thanks for dropping by. I'm on this huge ego trip. I think the people from the VFW mostly just shake their head at me. Too much work for most of those folks.

One very hot day last summer, they had some shing-dig going on and there were a number of police and firefighters giving presentations and such. It must of been about 100 degrees and one of the cops walked over to tell me it was too hot for me to be working in my garden. I had on my ice cooler and felt quite comfortable. I assured him I was OK, but he kept coming back to check on me and everytime he walked away he was shaking his head. I got the neck cooler at Petco. It's for dogs and doesn't make the best fashion statement, but I can get about 2 hours of work done on one of them. Thinking about getting a few more, so I can extend my time outdoors next summer if we get hit with those awful temperatures again. Normally we only get a few days over 90 in the summer. Last summer it was 3 solid weeks of almost 100 everyday. I've been considering getting some fabic of some sort to protect my jolly bee. Had to cut it all the way back to the ground after that heat wave.

There is a thread on daves somewhere or a link for how to make those with the water polymers we use in our garden soil to absorb water. I'll try to find it.

I know this is crazy, but in India they drink hot liquids in hot temps to make their body more readily perspire and cool off.. I drink hot tea in the summer too. Sweaty gardener.

Yes, she is part chow and golden and has spots on her tongue.. When I first saw her, I thought the spots meant she was sick and I was going to take care of her and get her healthy again.. The vet told me otherwise!

Susan, I also have heard that one should drink hot liquids when the weather is hot - supposedly equalizes the inside and outside body temps, or something like that, so that the outside doesn't feel so overly hot. I can drink hot coffee or hot tea almost any time of the year! Your pup sounds delightful - and I think she's very lucky to have you.

:) awww.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I have a shar pei female and a male chow mix and i recognized the look right away, since both come from Chow. Do you always shave her, i use to shave him but the groomer told me it ruins their natural coat for the winter and their hair lays flat, She said it is better to have them brushed out. It gets cold in the winter nights here so I stopped shaving but believe me, i think about it over the long shedding season. I just want to not ruin all my vacuums with pet hair.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

I have to shave her. The poor thing gets hot spots and starts itching like crazy. We like to keep her shaved and clean as possible to help her out some. She lives completely indoors all year round. She's such a little princess that she's bothered by going to the bathroom in the rain and will delay going out as long as possible. She's got two big beds in the house and I'm sure she stays warm and comfortable... besides it's barely been cold here all winter!

We have a Chow mix also. Did you ever hear the old, old story about how their tongues got spotted purple? It goes that God's companion was a Chow, because they are the BEST dog, of course. When God was painting the sky blue He spilled a few drops of paint and the Chow licked them up...causing the purple spotted tongue! I always thought that story was cute, and thought I'd share it. =^)

how sweet :) And what a cute story. Chloe is a gift from heaven so it fits :)

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I love it. Never heard it either. They have horrible reputations for being mean but I think ours is a sweetheart and he is so darn smart, he cracks us up. He is part queensland so he loves these stuffed animals, if he sees one in our hands he begs and gets so anxious, so we give it to him and he takes them all and heards them all together, if he changes rooms he has to take them or see them from where he is. he has too many and if i put some in the closet, the second he hears the door, he is there so i feel bad because he knows and doesn`t forget them in there.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Shiloh is really intelligent too. We also have a Sheltie and a Doberman, both are known for being smart...but Shi out does them! She can spell! You know how you have to spell certain words like w-a-l-k so they don't get all excited? Well, that doesn't work for Shi anymore. The dang dog can spell. Not just one word, but...
Daddy
Treat
Eat
Feed
Out
(those are her favorite things)
It's not a trick that we taught her, she learned on her own. We have to keep coming up with new words she doesn't know, then she learns them, then she learns to spell them. It's pretty bad when you can't even keep a secret from your dog!!

lol, that is great

Oh vossner, not a speck of white on either one, how adorable they both are!!

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Before I became a gardener, I often thought of getting a lop, but the mix of current pets never was such that a bunny would survive my household unless always caged. Now that I'm a gardener, bunnies are not at the top of my welcome list. They do a lot of damage in my garden. Last summer was the worst and I think it was because Reggie was getting to old to chase after them. I'm hoping the new little guy will be more aggressive. As it stands now, I believe I'll be investing in quite a bit of chicken wire this year.

No fair having blooming plants in the middle of winter, Nery!!! Three more long months before we start seeing plants pop up here. I tried planting some pels directly in the ground one year and they didn't do very well. Keep them in pots and they thrive. Actually, I think they just really love whatever is in Miracle Grow potting soil. I should buy stock in that company.

What are your little guy's names? The new puppy would look great with them as he is pure white. One more week and he will be here. I wonder what he will destroy first.

How do you like these? Dark blue petunias with white million bells.

The white puppy with the black one and the black bunny would be adorable - sort of an oreo cookie!! Beautiful animals.

My cats bring me dead bunnies, too, or at least parts of them. Doggone them. I don't appreciate what the rabbits do to my flower beds, but I appreciate even less the gifts from the kitties.

Hellnzn11, I saw that it's your happy birthday!! Hope it's been a good one!!

Yes, Happy Birthday, Hellnzn11!!

Hellnzn -- Happy Birthday! Hope it's a great year for you!

Suzy

P.S. You have your very own happy birthday thread -- I did it early, so you'd be sure to see it. LOL!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

thank you so much that is just the nicest thing. It was a good birthday and no one forgot this year.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I love it, another day of DG happy birthdays for me. I feel like a kid again.

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

Pat, your garden is just AWESOME! I just get too willy-nilly and it never looks even like organized chaos (I've only had one growing season as a gardener). You've hooked me on geraniums - I don't think I have but one or two seeds of those from a trade earlier this year. So that's a new seed to hunt for! This year I'm doing the graph thing, planning, etc. I can only dream that one day I'll have gardens like yours and Suzy's (Iloquin)
I have a suspicion that SoulGarden's is the same way(never seen pics of hers)- she's closer to me so maybe I can take lessons...hahaha.

Susan, we have a coyote out here in our area - I heard him around 1 a.m. the first night we stayed in our house - so beautiful and so eerie sounding. So far I've only seen one live rabbit, a couple of chipmunks, and tons of birds which I love. We have a big open meadow behind us, so I suspect there will be some deer around sooner or later as well.

And Pat, you'll have to keep us updated on your new arrival :) A good friend of mine in Indiana has two Westies - she lost her other pair within six months of each other and promptly got another set. They must really be heartbreakers :D

~Sunny

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

But, Sunny, It's not suppose to look organized! While I spend a lot of time contemplating my mistakes and moving plants, I usually don't put too much thought into the initial planting. Because I'm a plant junkie, I often buy plants without thinking where they are going to go. I usually end up just putting them wherever I have space. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

I wrote the paper and asked them to run a story on Coyotes.... and yesterday the story ran with my family pictured in the Northside edition and here's the story.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/printedition/2007/01/14/nfxcoyotes0114.html

I think this summer I'm going to write them and say they should do a story on cottage gardening with kids complete with pictures and how too's. I'm going to lose weight now to get ready for it. HA HA HA!!! :)

Susan

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

Wow - good facts in that article too Susan. I think you'd do a jam up job on the Cottage Gardening topic - do you have any pictures around DG that I have overlooked?

I think your comment about dieting before the article is sooo funny - twice while I lived in Atlanta we had news crews in our neighborhood in the wee hours of the morning. They wanted to do a live interview and I was like "NO WAY" - I need preparation at ANY time -much more so at 3 or 4 a.m. after coming out of a sound sleep...LOL!

And Pat, whatever you do, it's working beautifully for you and I really like it!

~Sunny

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes Sunny, most all of the pictures I have posted in the plant files come from my garden.. So click on my name and then under plantfiles hit images and you'll see most of my garden.

Susan

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

Oh goodie! Thanks Susan. I know what I'll be doing during slow times at work today :D Since we're close geographically, I hope I'll gather more info from your pics as to what will do well. Now that I know how to do that, I can check other Georgia gardeners pictures too, thanks so much for showing me how that worked!

Happy Monday all :)

i just saw something last week on the CNN web site about coyotes. I think the story was about some location in Colorado, but who knows with my memory. I wonder what the coyote did with the tennis ball. I know if it were my Westie, it would be destroyed in a matter of days. I suppose even wild animals like to play.

Thanks for the complements, Sunny. I just finished blowing snow from the driveway. I would much rather be digging in the dirt. Maybe only about 3 more months until spring.

I went to our Arboretum on Saturday and learned how to make a light stand for indoor seed starting. I was pleased to find that the guy who was teaching the class used the same seed starting equipment that I purchased this year from Park's; their bio-dome. I got mine when they were on sale. So after I get the puppy settled in next week, I think I'll take a shot at making one. Materials should only cost about 15.00. That's quite a difference from the ones I've seen that you can buy. Man, are those expensive.

I'm off work today due to the Holiday and I'm meeting my sister for lunch. Then I have to come home and finish my snow blowing. Ick. The rest of the week looks sunny with mild temps, so I suppose I shouldn't whine too much. Everyone have a great day.

Thornton, IL

LOL I had to laugh at "due to the Holiday". For the first time in a long time, I got my six year old son up and off to school on time today. We were stunned, at first we thought we were the first ones there. Imagine my dismay to realize that there was No School Today!! I will never forget MLK Day again. And neither will Matt. LOL

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Boy, that coyote story was weird -- Atlanta! I didn't realize we were talking a major metropolitan area!

LOL on the vacation day story, PG! I was always sure I would do that, but it never happened. We did wait out for the bus for 2 hours on a snow day, tho.

Beaker, Start a new thread and tell us how to make a light stand! I *need* one of those!!! Tell me how!

Suzy

In this forum?

It might be a while. I'm suppose to be writing a family cookbook for my niece for her birthday and I haven't started yet!!! Her birthday is Feb 28th. Then the pup is coming this week and I also start puppy obedience. And...I'm at the Arboretum for the next three Saturdays taking these classes. Tell you what, when I start building mine, I'll take pics and try to post as I go. Hopefully, I'll find time to build one.
