Journal and Tradelist Double Sort - Genus (1) and species (2)?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave or anybody,

---------> The subject line is wrong on this. I meant "My Journal" or "MY Tradelists" instead of "Plant Files".

I added a set of Primulas to my Journal as I sowed them this past week and I can sort them by species, so they're all nice and neat. If I add a series of different species of poppies, and later add more Primulas of different species, can I sort on Genus first and the species second so all my Primulas are together and the species are in alpha order?

I can't seem to phrase the question properly. Excel has a sort feature where you have criteria one and then criteria two. Does my Journal or trade list have that feature? *Can* it have that feature?

Dave, I too would love to be able to choose a primary sort order followed by a secondary sort order of my choice. Example, Genus as the primary sort followed by a secondary sort order by cultivar, thus putting a large list of Hemerocallis in alphabetical order by cultivar (or which ever secondary sort I choose, date, location, species, common name) I think this is what Illoquin wants as well, but it is confusing to explain. If this is not what she wants, it is something I would love. Thanks, Patti

LOL! Patti -- you sound like you really know what you're talking about...yes, that's exactly what I wanted to do. Thanks!

Illoquin, I thought you and I wanted the same thing. I thought about this many times when scrolling down to find a cultivar, but I was never cleaver enough to ask about putting it on our wish list. Thanks. I was in the book business for years and this was hugely important for sorting books first by the author's name , followed by titles by that author alphabetical order. Patti

Ideally both of these should allow you to sort by species, which would mean by genus, then species. ditto for cultivar sort (first by genus, then by cultivar)

Terry, I still do not get the desired results when I sort by genus followed by a second sort a listing within the genus an alphabetical list. I tried sorting by genus followed by a second sort ( by cultivar) which cancelled the genus sort and put the list in what I did for the second sort (cultivar). So what am I doing wrong? Thanks for the reply. Patti

You're not doing anything wrong, you can only sort on one thing right now--that's why this thread was started. If you sort once and then sort a second time, you might as well never have done the first sort because the program only knows how to sort one thing at a time right now.

Ecrane3, thanks, I thought that we were asking for a primary sort with the ability to have a secondary sort include with it, so I was surprised that Terry suggested that we could already. It is confusing to explain what we are hoping to be able to do. I have used this type of requested feature on many spread sheets, but I don't know the correct computer lingo. Anyone else know the correct terms? Patti

Naw, Patti, You got it explained very clearly -- Terry just added a different way to phrase it. Now we wait for Dave to pop in.
