Are there and musicians on here?..bluegrass pickers.

Lakeland, FL

I was just checking to see if there were any musicians out here. I play blugrass gospel and some traditional bluegrass songs. Thought maybe we could share some good tabs. I play traditional hymns and other songs as well but I mostly play bluegrass on my Martin guitar.
Just checking..LOL

We live in the heart of Bluegrass, but my hubby is pretty much Country Traditional. He can play Bluegrass, but tends to lean toward other styles. He likes Merle Haggard and old traditional Gospel, with a touch of Jim Croce and Bob Seger. We don't keep much tab around as he plays by ear, but I can see what he's got.

He has a 1952 Martin D-18, a 1976 HD-28 Martin, a 1995 810 Brazillian Taylor and a 1996 Omega Custom...Other guitars come and go...and the '76 Martin probably will at some point too, but those are his mainstays.

My older son who lives away from home now plays upright bass in a bluegrass band. He began not too long ago while still in high school playing bass with a group who did rock and roll. That group has now pretty much become the bluegrass band. One member of the teen band has gone on to make music his profession. Justin Derrico moved to Los Angeles about two years ago and has begun making a name for himself. We are very proud of what he is doing.

At the moment Justin is on tour with the group PINK. He has also toured with another teen band that I cannot recall the name of now. Having him come from our little small town is quite exciting for us who know him.

Jimmy Fortune who was one of The Statler Brothers, who are also local, helped Justin meet the "right" people in LA. Jimmy sang at Justin's dads funeral last year and that was very special.

Sorry to have gotten off topic here. I hope that you will find some folks to help. Have a good day.

c7, the University of North Dakota has a couple great list servers, comando and flatpickle. The comando one is for mandolin, and flatpickle is short for flat pick list. I know the mandolin list had hundreds, if not thousands of tabs you could download, maybe flatpickle is the same. I just lurked but a lot of the great players were on there chatting, mostly only about music. It was free, no ads or other nonsense. I can't say for sure if it's still around, though

Now theres some serious guitars right there. Thanks folks. I've got plenty of good resourses I just thought I'd see what we have on here. I just bought a couple of books off line .They are ok but not quite what I was expecting. One is Smokey Mountain Christmas and the other was Flatpicking the Gospels. They are ok but not worth the 60.00 I paid. I took music in college as a minor so I've go tsome tools but I'm always lookng for some advanced tablatures. Thanks for responding. Melody, those guitars you mentioned above are selling for 1000s on ebay. ..way out of my range.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

We've got the Oh Brother Where Art Thou music....would you like some of that?

And yes, we're serious about guitars in this house....he does a little 'horse trading' and we have a few Nashville connections to put something really special in the right hands. We also know where to ask if someone is searching for something special...Martins or Gibsons especially. We're an acoustic house, but do handle a vintage electric or two every now and then.

He also teaches 2 nights a week ,and we help our students find the best quality guitar for the amount of money they have to spend. There are quite a few excellent entry level instruments that are quite affordable. You don't have to spend thousands to get a wonderful instrument.

Yes Melody,
I would appreciate the Oh Brother Where Art Thou...The Martin I have is the cheapest model out there. It's the DM1 I've been playing since 1971. We don't have a TV in our home so I play about 1-2 hours per night. My dream would be to have the D -45 but that will probably never happen. I paid 600.00 for the DM1. The action is a little too low for me. I also have an Ovation Elete I bought for 1060.00 I was playing it in church . That action was way too high.LOL I brought it down some. I bought a DM4 Sigma off of ebay a few months ago. I put a new bone saddle on it and it plays and sounds decent for a Sigma.
Thanks for the reply,

Thanks Magpye...that was very thoughtful. I have the first one. It's one of the best I've found.

Do you have access to a fax machine? That would be the simplest way to get them to you. I'll dig around and see what else he's got.

All guitar players aspire to a D-45...Keith dreams of a pre-WW2 one, but they only made 90, and the surviving ones go for more than our house...so, it's just a nice thing to have on his wish list. It's never gonna happen...

The old Sigmas were quite good..(in the 70's and 80's they were made in Japan) They're undervalued and folks don't think of them when looking for a guitar...the old Yamahas were awesome too. Yamaha used the trimmings from the piano factory to make guitars back then and we grab up every one that we can. Either one usually makes a great player. The old Alvarez Yaris are quite good and affordable. K. Yari was a guitar maker in Japan, and in the 80's Alvarez had him oversee the building of some very nice models...many of which are great Bluegrass guitars because of the bottom end. They still make the Yari line today, but it's not the same. If you're careful....most of these can be had for under 500.00....some even less. We've owned several of each and they're usually really good...in fact, we have an old Sigma right now that wasn't in good enough shape to find a good home for it. There is something wrong with the neck that can't be repaired, it still looks great, so Keith was afraid that it might get sold somewhere down the line as playable....so, we've retired it to be his 'autograph guitar' It sits in an honored place in our living room on a stand and we collect autographs on it.

You don't have to spend gazillions to have great instruments...there's a story behind each and every one of Keith's 'keepers'...and the HD-28 just hasn't found it's forever home yet. He's planning on using it to trade for a 1950's or '60's D-28, but until then, it lives in our house and gets played. The Taylor is his main guitar...the Brazillian Rosewood just suits his style...and now the guitar has too many 'ghosts' in it to ever let it go.

I could go on forever about guitars...they're his Daves Garden...so some of the info has rubbed off on me. It's a fun little sideline, and educational too.

edited to say that Keith also suggests a 3 series Larrivee...a D-03 or an L-03...they don't make them any more, but they are solid wood, not laminate, and retailed new for under 800.00....These are newer guitars from the last 7 years and are quite awesome for the money. Larrivee still makes many more expensive models, but the 3 series was a great entry level instrument......and you get a solid wood guitar for a laminate budget.

Thanks so much for the heads up. My wife is the computer whiz so I'll see if she knows about the facs machine infor. I do appreciate the time and effort you took to post this.
Chuck7

Lakeland, FL

Well, my wife said the only Facs machine available is at the school we both work at and it can only be used for school stuff. I do appreciate the kind gesture anyway. Actually it's the Christmas season so I'll probably work through my Steve Kaufman Smokey Mountain Christmas book. One of my favorite Christmas books is teh one put out by Reader's Digest. That is one fine book. It's not bluegrass but does have teh chords. And; there is a chord on about every syllable.LOL And these chords are the good ones..Dm 7 -5 maj 6th LOL ...those guys.

have a great day,

Got lots of chord stuff...he writes it out for his students. He rarely uses tab. After I get my house put back together where I can find it, I'll run you some copies. (we're in the middle of a huge re-model and stuff is piled on top of stuff) We run copies for the guitar students all the time. It will probably be after Christmas before I can get it, but I've got some good stuff for you.

I apreciate that..You are very kind.

Chuck....as a previous Lakelander....I would like to tell you that I belong to Keith's Fan Club! What you need to do is plan to attend the Kentucky Dave's Garden Round Up next year....Melody is the "planner" and you will hear....and play guitar with Keith himslef...plus Elena's husband, Al....and any more people that wants to join in the "sessions"..Great times are had by all. Jo

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Yeah, we have quite a little 'band' ....(actually, it's much more informal than that) People play and sing all day....especially the spouses who are 'non-gardening'....It's an annual event nearby on Lake Barkley at Prizer Point Resort. Any DG member is most welcome......we had 14 states represented one year, so folks come from all over.

Mostly old traditional songs...but you'll hear anything from traditional Gospel to Jimmy Buffett.

Lakeland, FL

WOW !! I'm kind of new here so keep me updated on this event. Questions..
1. What part of Kentucky?

2. What month ?

3. What's the cost?

4. How crazy does it get?....I'm kind of quiet and mellow....:-}

Thanks,C7

Crossville, TN

After a Dave's Garden Round Up you'll lose "quiet and mellow" They are all fun....and Corky(??) has one in Lakeland too....be sure to watch the Round Ups Forum....they will all be posted there. Florida will usually have one starting in early spring. ....but don't miss the KY one! Jo

Lakeland, FL

Sounds a little scary to me.:-}

Crossville, TN

Yeah!! So scary that I try to attend as many as I can....LOL

Here is the place to watch for one in your area....then go to Round Up Pictures Forum to see what fun we all had....Jo

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

heycharlie probably knows all about how guitars take on a personality all their own....when you buy one, it's not like purchasing a washing machine or a toaster...and as the years go on, and the guitar lives with you...(guitarists know exactly what that means) You build up experiences and memories while playing certain instruments. We call it 'getting ghosts'. After a while, it's pretty much a family member.

We have 3 like that...each with their own stories and memories. People who have played along with him...or actually played the guitars...some of which are no longer with us. The guitars are a physical connection to each person or event, and every time he strums the strings, or plays someone's favorite tune, we get a great reminder of our friends.

We're being very careful not to get attached to the HD-28...it's lived here about a year now...and we don't need another 'keeper'

Lakeland, FL

Let me know when your ready to get rid of the HD 28, I may be your Huckleberry{- :
