Sweetheart Christmases

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Okay ladies...

Tell me a "romantic gift" story.. What's a neat gift you've given that's beyond "a shirt or tie"... Now, keep it "Rated G"... I'm searching for good gift ideas that are "out of the ordinary"...

:) Think! Quick! Christmas is coming, and I'll be out of town the weekend before the holiday!! =) Quick!! :)

OK this will sounds goofy but one of the sweetest gifts my DH ever got me was Cedar wood. There was a closet upstairs that I wanted to line in cedar and I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money. Then that Christmas there was this really heavy box under the tree and I opened it to find a box of cedar planking! (It was jsut one of the many required for the closet) I was so excited and thrilled.. It may not be exciting for anyone else but it was very special to me

That's cute.. But I don't think it's something I can do ... "here sweetie.. cedar wood, just for you".. LOL... he'll look at me like I've been swallowing goldfish whole again... gulp! :)

Why not take him out to dinner and a movie and spend the night in a nice hotel suite? Or a night at a romantic Bed and Breakfast facility.

One year I got my very own chain saw. Another yr. I got a red wagon. This yr. I want a log splitter, but my husband says maybe next yr. Whatever he gives me, he gives with love. If I got nothing the rest of my life at Christmas but a beatifue card and the love of the man I married that would be good enough for me. Things don't mean so very much to me. It is the love and respect he shows me that makes it Christmas all year long. He is the love of my life and I thank God for him.

Always on Christmas Eve he prepares a special dinner for us. This yr. we are having rosemary roasted lamb, herbed potatos, aspargus, crescent rolls and fruit cake that he made several wks. ago and each Sat. puts a little blackberry wine on. That makes the fruitcake so moist and imparts such a good flavor to it.

On the first Christmas Eve that my husband and I spent
alone after all the kids were married and finally out of the
house, my husband brought in a picnic basket and sat it
down in front of me. " Merry Christmas, honey," he said.
"Because everyone's coming for Christmas dinner tomorrow,
you'll be busy and I thought we'd have our Christmas tonight.
Just you and me, our first one alone in years and years."

I opened the basket, thinking there was probably a kitten
or a puppy inside. Instead, there was a loaf of French bread,
a jug of red wine, and a round of Edom cheese, together
with a small book of poetry by Omar Khyam. One page
had a corner turned down and underlined was the line that
says "a loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou beside me,
singing in the wilderness; ah, wilderness were paradise enow."
The cheese was his own idea.

We turned off the lights, lit the tree, sat on the couch and ate
our meager dinner and talked and laughed. Best meal I ever ate.
Best present I ever got.

Well,, of course the cedar wood thing only works if it's something they have really been wanting. :) DH isn't too romantic really. Once when we were dating he got me some earrings that were perfect but since then his attempts to get jewelry have not been successful. He also got me a little teddy bear once when we were dating.. hmm and flowers.. I think it was marriage that cut off the romantic gifts lol..
I do need to add that after the success of the cedar wood he thought he had hit paydirt and the next year got me a new faucet for the kitchen sink.. hmmm.. We did need a new faucet but the next year I told him I wanted something a little more personal.. He asked me to define personal and I said.. Well..how about something I can take with me if we move?

Cute Jazzpumpkin. Thanks for starting this thread AngelSong. I don't have anything to add at moment, but will think on it and post if I come up with something. I am married to a very romantic husband, so I will have to search my brain for some of things that he has done.

I like the idea for dinner, movie and stay away frome home for an evening. Be sure when you decided what you will be giving him that you let us know what you decided on.

I ended up with a couple of hand tools... a night away just isn't an option for either of us at this time because of two legged & four legged extra responsibilities.. It is a cute idea though.

My DH has given me some wonderful gifts over the last 18 years. But by far, my favorite...was not what you expect.

We had been talking about our childhoods. Favorite things we had growing up, and we missed. Things that brought back plesant memories.

So, on Christmas morning 3 years ago, I opened a case of orange and grape nehi soda. You would have thought he gave me the Hope Diamond....I burst into tears and was sobbing like a baby.

It showed me he really listened to things I said, and remembered. It had been at least 3 months since we had had that conversation....and he tracked down the company and had it shipped.

Funny thing though, I don't remember THAT much sugar in the soda....and WOW, was it sweet! I have saved six of the unopened bottles...they are out for Christmas.

SO, for Christmas...what was in your special persons life that made them smile and is very hard to find now?

I am smiling through tears as I read. Manhot and Debbie....you certainly have very special people to share your lives with!

Debi,.,what a wonderful gift! I remember my dh came home one time with a multipack of wrigley's spearment gum for me. It was my favorite gum and I almost cried.. lol..

Jazz, I still can't open a pack of Wrigleys without thinking of my Grandmother. She always sent me one stick of it in each card I ever got.

Everyone has wonderful stories.

DebbiesDaisy, I'm laughing over the sugar!

My most memorable were the telescope to see Halleys comet, and the nightscope to look at wildlife after dark. (I like practical gifts.)

How about writing a short love story of your time together, maybe about the honeymoon. My wife never did that for me, but I have for her. I also send my sister short stories of our times growing up. They love it. And it is cheap.

This year is a bit tricky for us - we decided to spend the BIG BUCKS on the old car, and not exchange gifts. Sounds OK, but I know "that won't work". Car got fixed for less than a few payments on a new one.

I already have a small present for her, but we will be at more than one Christmas party, so need to come up with something else.

I share your problem.

GeorgiaRed - I'm going to take you up on that love-letter suggestion while I'm home with my family, and give it to him when I return. Lots of time in the airports to get home ... Lots of time to sit & think about it .. :)

He loved his power tool set, by the way.. :) On a dare from a girlfriend, I got him a camoflage Santa-hat, and was pleasantly surprised when he said, "next time I go duck hunting, I'm wearing that. .. my friends will think that's pretty entertaining." LOL
