No can do he has tied my li........ uuuumms.
Greenjay I dug under the Tiger eye to bury my Maddie dog and looked at distance traveled and I have to say I would not plan on suckering. This specimen has been in the ground over 2 years and no runners where I dug any farther than 2'. They also were small in diameter. Also with disturbance of root I will see the tendency to sucker next year and report. YES the laceleaf types of staghorn do and they are gone all but one. I can't kill such a beautiful specimen. See picture below. And it suckers out into the dry native soil where I have placed it.
Tiger Eyes Sumac "BailTiger"
Good to know about the tiger eye. We have 900 ft of street-facing hillside that has to be landscaped next fall, and it has to be VERY easy to care for as well as beautiful, scenic, and distinctive (of course. they want the moon and the stars but will not allocate the $$). Tigey eye sumacs are in our price range for beautiful and distinctive.
Anyone know the mature size of the Tiger Eyes sumac?
Nobody I know does. It is not listed on the plant when I bought it 2 1/2 yrs ago. It is a slow grower and is only half the size of my smooth. All 3 of my tiger eyes are staying small. My guess is about 10 to 12' tall max but I think they will be quite wide.
Thx Soferdig. I am doing a new border & will make room for one. The local paper gardning section raved about this plant. Alist of what we've gotten so farr for our 16 X 40 foot border (they may not all fit) is:'
1 cryptomeria japonica 'spiralis'
1 c.j. 'elegans'
1 picea pungens 'rh montgomery'
1 pinus wallichiana 'frosty'
2 chamaecyparis obtusa cripsii
3 picea glauca conica (prob diff border)
1 sequoia sempervivens 'cantab'
1 cedrus deodara 'snowsprite'
1 c. atlantica glauca fastigiata
1 c. a. 'horstmann'
1 tsuga can. 'moonfrost'
1 tsuga hetero. 'iron springs'
1 cupressus glabra 'blue ice'
1 abies koreana 'silberlocke'
1 tsuga can. 'gentsch white'
1 pinus contorta 'chief joseph'
1 pinus sylvestris 'gold coin'
1 pinus X 'mercury'
1 pinus thunbergii 'thunderhead'
1 abies procera "sherwoodii'
1 ulmus X 'jaqueline hillier'
plus i have 3 leatherleaf viburnum already planted, and a variagated ceanothus (lost tags) & many perennials which we dug & moved out til we got the berm.wall/border built. I geuss i shd have posted this on "design help for new cool mostly conifer border needed" thread. if i can figure out how to use my daughter's digital camera & post "before" & "after" pics I will. The neighbors behind us took down a 40 - 50 ft cedar & we needed privacy, plus i have had a conifer wish list going for awhile. any suggestions appreciated.
Well I would think that in a 40' long section you would have room for 2 or 3 of the above. I know the need to fill the space is eating away at your wannahave list but. I always wonder about you organized planning people who have lists when going into nurseries. I envy your foresight. I go in and see a plant that is on sale, or kind of what I want, and buy it. Then I go home and see where it might fit. LOL. Good work third acre.
I purchased a Tiger Eyes this spring and it is my favorite plant. I have it in a container and need some advice. I am in Spokane, WA (Winter temps sometimes get below 0) and I don't want to chance losing it. Has anyone had any luck wintering this plant in a container in similar conditions? It is gorgeous!!
